For more than a decade and all around the world, FLAAR is dedicated to evaluate wide-format inkjet printers and its sup-plies.
When you go to a trade show it is tough to know which media or substrate companies to visit. How in the world can you tell the difference between the printable materials from one company compared with the other? To help printshop own-ers and managers recognize which media and substrate is of good quality, FLAAR is gradually getting to know the various manufacturers and distributors.
In this report, FLAAR presents the information collected during the trade show about various media companies, both pro-ducers and distributors of materials for inkjet printing that were present in SGIA 2011.

How to initiate a FLAAR Reports evaluation of your material or media?
First, try to speak with any of the FLAAR staff at the next trade show. It is best if you can make an appointment with Dr Nicholas Hellmuth to visit your booth. Write [email protected] to make an appointment via his appointments secretary, Deyni Medina.
Then at the trade show itself, find the FLAAR staff and arrange to get Dr Hellmuth to your booth. Realize there may be 40 to 80 exhibitors of materials; in a normal three-day expo, if we spend 1 hour at each booth, which is 40 to 80 hours.
Clearly there are not that many hours in even an entire week-long trade show! Because we also have to evaluate inks, printers, XY-cutters, CNC routers, and laminators!
This is why we prefer to inspect the materials at the factory, demo-room, and main headquar-ters. Naturally this is a hosted visit: round trip airfare (economy is acceptable; Business Class is appreciated but not required); hotel, meals, local transportation, and a standard consulting fee.
You can ask for the manufacturers consulting information in advance (write [email protected]).During or after the initial meeting, your company can decide whether you wish a full evalua-tion project. A full evaluation project is in several stages:
• Initial visit (demo room, factory, headquarters)• Visit to end-users who are actually using your materials• Then we issue FLAAR Report(s) on your materials based on what we have learned.
For PVC and for PE we have first-stage reports (see below).
In some cases we fully realize that a distributor may not wish to identify from which factory they get their materials. Obviously in this case we will then not publish photos of the factory. Instead we will focus on the distributor and end-users. The important aspect is for FLAAR to learn what your materials are like out in the real-world: do they work well? And with which inks do they work well?
