Greetings members; Our pool season as usual was a summertime fun success and has concluded at the beginning of the new school year. Speaking of the 2014/2015 school year, SHA partnered with District 8 (D8) City Council to facilitate the purchase 2” binders and materials for students entering Hobby Middle School. The HOA additionally purchased 18 bean bags for their reading resource.
Our Saturday Coffee’s resumed an every other week schedule with the advent of the Fall season. The Egg & I restaurant hosted a waffle and coffee breakfast October 18th. D8 and SAWS sponsored a tour of the Twin Oaks and Dos Rios water treatment facilities of which Debbie and David Saldaña attended on behalf of the board.
The Holiday Craft Experience continued to provide unusual Christmas gifts for purchase. Items ranged from jewelry, and embroidery to miniature clothes for “Barbie” dolls to dog leashes. Jay Cocker’s stone carvings showed great artistry.
Finally SHA partnered with D8 for our annual Christmas Party. D8 provided tamales, rice and beans. Santa Claus made a 2 hour visit to the children’s delight. The well participated event showed D8 why Shenandoah is such a neighborhood gem nestled in the middle of their council district.
Our website is becoming more and more the place to seek information about what is happening in our community. It is always being updated, so please visit it frequently. As well, like us on Facebook, another source of Shenandoah information, and one that is very popular with our members.
We hope to see you in the new year. Our next HOA members meeting is Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.
Continuing to work for you, respectfully,

Notice to all property owners preparing to remodel their homes or erecting a new fence:You must submit your plans to the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) for review and approval by the HOA Board of Directors before construction may begin, as stated in the “Deed Restrictions” of the Shenandoah HOA governing documents. All city permit regarding construction must be submitted with your plan. To avoid delay in your construction project, please follow the proper procedures.
Time to Remove or Replace Your Arizona Ash Tree with?:The following information on Arizona Ash trees was retrieved from Austintreeexperts.com and ehow.com.
Time Line: On average the Arizona ash matures, grows and remains healthy for 25 to 30 years. This may seem like a lengthy amount of time, but other types of trees thrive for hundreds of years.
Nickname: The Arizona ash was nicknamed the “trash tree” by horticulturist Calvin R. Finch, because of its shorter life span.
Considerations: Frequent pruning is essential to keep the ash tree healthy. The tree’s quick growth may cause branches to become tangled and die more quickly. Pruning keeps the tree healthy throughout its life span. Without proper pruning, this tree will start to experience limb failure sometime around year 15-20. Once the first limb breaks out it is a domino effect. That wound begins to decay which makes the rest of the tree weaker. Before you know it there isn’t enough canopy left to consider it a functioning tree. For tree trimming and removal contact:CROSSTREE LANDSCAPING @ 210-306-8079
Shenandoah Roof Requirements:Homeowners must notify Shenandoah ACC and Board of Directors for approval of material type to be used in new roof construction. Homeowners are limited to the following types of roof material:20-year asphalt shingle, 30, 40, or 50 year three tab dimensional asphalt shingles. Adhering to this practice maintains the integrity of Shenandoah Homes Association, and insures home values will not be impacted negatively.
Clubhouse Patio Rules:
Management would like to clarify rules regarding use of the patio during clubhouse rental events. Those renting the clubhouse have the exclusive right to the use five (5) of the seven (7) picnic tables during their event. Community members may use the two (2) remaining picnic tables closest to the patio bathroom. In the spirit of community, we ask that members respect the use of space that renters of the clubhouse have paid for.
Beautify Shenandoah: “Beautify Shenandoah” is a long-range neighborhood beautification initiative established to maintain property values and protect the integrity of our neighborhood. Homeowners are stepping forward through their home beautification projects and we are seeing the changes community-wide. We have several Block Captains and want to see that continue to expand. If you would like to become a Block Captain please send us an email at [email protected]. We encourage our members to begin taking a look at those landscaping projects that need to be done as well as trees that need trimming. Please help contribute to this process and increase your property values by tackling these and other curb appeal projects around your home.

Misuse of Common Area Facilties:Anyone engaged in the misuse of common area facilities will be banned from the premises for a period of time as determined by the Board of Directors upon review of the infraction(s) including: hoisting children over the fence; throwing rocks in pool or on building; defacing or purposely damaging building, security cameras, tables, pool or playground equipment; improper disposal of hot coals from BBQ grill; using or directing profane or abusive language towards management, lifeguards, Board Members and membership; non-adherance to pool rules plainly posted before entering designated pool area including carrying of food, or any drink other than water in an appropriate container. Please follow rules and be safe during use of common area facilities.
Fence Construction Requirements in ShenandoahTo avoid delay in your project, please follow the proper procedures. The 6ft privacy wood fence must be constructed from either pine or cedar with 3.25” or 5.25” dog-eared pickets. Mixed fencing is not allowed. If homeowners utilize the easement as part of their fenced-in property, they are required to incorporate two gates per side into the fence construction, so that in case of an emergency utility trucks can have access to repair electrical systems or trim trees. Please refer to city guidelines for gate construction requirements. Homeowners must submit their requests to ACC and Board of Directors for approval prior to fence construction.
The Holiday Craft Experience turned out to be a moderate success despite the inclement weather. There were a total of Nine table participants with items ranging from crochet, embroidery, jewelry, dog and cat collars, leashes, and toys. Jay Cocker’s stone work carvings were a unique display of artistry and a great gift item. Handmade Barbie clothes were a hit as well. As always coffee, pastries and lunch was served. Some changes considered for next season is to hold the event in October and to bring it outdoors.
