TORAH MATTERS:

PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Sammy Bergman JEWISH CONFIDENCEJEWISH CONFIDENCEJEWISH CONFIDENCEJEWISH CONFIDENCE

About nine years ago, when I was student in Yeshiva University, I took a short flight to Chicago to attend a friend’s wedding. I was sitting calmly in my seat, when a group of young men and women my age boarded the plane who were acting a bit “rowdy.” To my chagrin, one of the young women from the group sat down in the seat next to mine. While I was a bit apprehensive at first, she was friendly enough, and we engaged in an enjoyable conversation. She saw my kippah and asked me a couple of questions about Judaism.

Then came the moment of truth. At some point the conversation paused, and I had some time to myself. I had brought a small Gemara on the plane, and I now had the perfect opportunity to learn for a few minutes. But I hesitated…what would this young woman think? What misconceptions might she have about this strange book? What if she asked me about it?

Sure enough, inquisitive as she was, it took just a few moments for her to drop the question:

“What’s that?” She asked. “It’s a Talmud,” I replied. “What’s in it?” She pressed further. “Oh, it discusses various Jewish laws.” “And what’s the stuI on the side?” “Commentary.” “Oh…do you have to read that?” “Uh…not really.” She smiled and responded, “But you want to… Cool!”

Whew, that wasn’t too bad after all! Reflecting on that conversation, I realize that I had no logical reason to be ashamed of my religiosity. In fact, this woman, who as you can imagine I never saw again, was quite impressed, even inspired, that I voluntarily used my spare time to learn more about my tradition. In retrospect, I was responsible for generating any shame, or bashfulness I felt at the time. I simply had to make the decision to be confident about who I was and how I lived my life.

In our Torah reading this week, we learn about a group of sins, the curses, which are designated for people who violate a group of sins. The Torah first lists examples of specific prohibitions such as “one who constructs an idol and conceals it” (Devarim 27:15), “one who insults his father and mother” (27:16), and “one who accepts a bribe to strike the soul of the innocent (27:25), among others. However, the last curse is designated for a more general sin: “Curse is he who doesn’t uphold the world of this Torah to perform them.” Rabbi Moshe Nachmanides (Ramban ad loc.) and Rabbi Ovadiah Seforno (Seforno ad loc.) both explain that one isn’t punished with this curse for merely failing to fulfill a commandment. Rather, one suIers this curse when they question the validity of a mitzvah and argue that it’s not worthwhile. Upholding the Torah requires us not only to observe our traditions, but also to believe in them and to be proud of them.

No one is perfect, and we all struggle with diIerent elements of halachic observance. However, even as we struggle, we can reaRrm our general commitment to living a Torah lifestyle. As we approach the high holidays, and continue charting a path toward Teshuva, it’s worthwhile to work on being proud of who we are and confident in our heritage. Confidence in one’s religious identity spurs spiritual growth and can provide us the inner strength to sincerely improve. May we all enjoy a happy, healthy year in which we live our Jewish lives proudly and freely.
