"The poetry is the un ive rsa l

possession of mankind revealing itself

everywhere, and at all times, in

hundreds and hundreds of man...

National literature is now rather on

unmeaning term; the epoch of World

literature is at hand, and every one

must strive to hasten its approach."

He fully realized that different peoples

were at historically different stages of

their development and that no unitary

criteria could applied to their art but

the criterion of Universal humanity of

aesthetic values applied to all chines

aspiring to link East and West through

art. He was delighted by the Indian

poetry, which towering above "a most

abstruse philosophy" and "a most

monstrous religion", revealed the

"content of human relationships" with II

remarkable pithiness."

'What poetry is', says Greening

Lamborn, 'we can no more define

tha'n we can define life or love; but

what things are poetry we know, as

we know what things are living, and

loving, by their attributes and by their

effects upon us. And the first of these

is a troubling of the waters of the

spirit. All poetry expresses one's

feelings, and attempts to aweken the

corresponding emotions in the lieart

of another. Emotion, as rightly

suggested in the above quotation, is

the cause of poetry, it stirs the poet's

imaginations.'

"Poetry is the breath of the finer spirit

of all knowledge".

"Poetry in a general sense may be

defined as the expression of the

imagination"

"Poetry is the concrete and artistic

expression of the human mind in

emotion and rhythmical language"

Poetry is "the most perfect speech of

man", and considers it as a "criticism

of life under the conditions fixed for

such a criticism by the laws of poetic

truth and beauty"
