Adam Johnson piano

Auden Theatre Tickets: £20 Whole Series £85

Multi prize-winning pianist Adam Johnson was a Scholar and Junior Fellow at The Royal Northern College of Music. He made his Concerto debut aged 15 playing Mozart Piano Concerto No. 05 at the Glinka Academia, St. Petersburg, conducting from the piano. Unique among the outstanding artists of his generation, Adam is as equally at home conducting opera as he is fulfilling the role of soloist in concerto repertoire, playing chamber music, or directing his own large-scale compositions. He is the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of The Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra, and is a founding member, and Trustee of the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival.

Senior School piano pupils were lucky to have Adam as a teacher until his professional career made it too difficult to commit to weekly sessions.

Programme to include music by: Chopin, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Liszt.

Music comes in many wonderful shapes, forms and sounds which we strive to demonstrate in this Subscription Series. All highly-acclaimed musicians, our performers this year will take our audiences on a journey showcasing the great romantic composers, music from the West End, world-class percussion which will have you dancing in your seats, not to mention sublime strings and a Baroque musical feast.

As in previous years you can take advantage of the subscription scheme and buy tickets for all five concerts at the heavily discounted price of £85. Surely, an irresistible price to see such a stellar series of concerts on your doorstep as well as the opportunity to dip into a perhaps unfamiliar genre of music. Booking is available online throughout the year, or during term time in person or by phone, see page 26.

We value your continued support and look forward to seeing you during the forthcoming season.

An epic presentation of migration, atavism, DNA and the ancestors’ origins through a story of the huge migration from Central Africa (5000 years ago), the migration of the Bantu Tribe from the Tanganyika and Baka regions all the way to Zimbabwe to build the biggest kingdom in Africa (1200 AD) and Anna’s own migration to the western hemisphere some 800 years later.

The multi-talented Anna Mudeka takes audiences on an exhilarating, inspiring and thought provoking journey to ancient and modern-day Zimbabwe, and speaks of the challenges and opportunities of starting a new life in a different country. Orlando: Who is she? Who is he? Who are we?

Find out in the life-affirming, comedic tale of an immortal poet, whose gender cannot be pinned down, whose spirit cannot be caged, and whose irreverent, romantic adventures across British history – from the 1500s to the present day – provide a magic-realist exploration of human identity; personal, sexual and national.

Drawing on a decade’s worth of critically-acclaimed theatre-making, Dyad Productions – performer Rebecca Vaughan and writer/director Elton Townend Jones – explore what it means to find our place in the world whilst remaining utterly true to who we are. In and Out of Chekhov’s Shorts

Chekhov is one of the great writers of the 20th Century and these tales, newly adapted and directed by Eliot Giuralarocca, remain as memorable and bracing as jumping into a cold plunge pool after a hot sauna! Performed by a company of five and featuring original live music and stylish ensemble story-telling, In and Out of Chekhov’s shorts is an exhilarating, fun and accessible romp through some of the best of Chekhov’s short stories including The Lady with the Little Dog, The Chemist’s Wife, At a Summer Villa, An Avenger and The Bear.

These wonderful hymns to the absurdity of everyday life, are by turns hilarious, romantic, poignant, odd and memorable. They hold the mirror up to the half-comic, half-painful experience of love and relationships and create a world in which the tender and the grotesque are inextricably linked. Ludicrous situations and larger than life characters abound in an evening that simply cannot be missed!

Macbeth

This is London, October 1987.

This is a tale of greed, betrayal and murder. This is Macbeth.

On the trading floor, success is all and ruthless ambition is rewarded. The only problem is, how do you control it before it consumes you?

Award-winning theatre company Proteus present a highly physical re-imagining of Shakespeare’s Macbeth as a corporate thriller set against the backdrop of the ‘greed is good’ culture of 1980s Britain.

This new production features movement from George Mann of Ad Infinitum and is set to a pulsing soundtrack of 80s electro hits, synth-inspired modern classics and interwoven with specially composed original music.
