Neue Galerie On November 20th Sisterhood members visited the Neue Galer-

ie on 5th Avenue in New York City to see the

show “Klimt and the Women of Vienna’s

Golden Age, 1900-1918.” At the heart of the

show were 11 life-size portraits, among them

“Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” which was

made famous by the movie “Woman in

Gold.” We had previously watched this mov-

ie, which tells the story of a Jewish heir’s

struggles to retrieve her family’s possessions

that had been looted by the Nazis. The

Neue Galerie was founded by Ronald Lauder

and is housed in a Fifth Avenue mansion

across the street from the Metropolitan Mu-

seum of Art. We had lunch at the Met and

also found time to see the exhibit “Jerusalem

1000-1400." We all enjoyed this trip to the

city and loved seeing the paintings.

    Our Chanukah Party 2016

Alex Fogelman came to the US from Israel with his family few months ago to fulfill

his lifelong dream of being a farmer. After on-

ly a few months, he is fulfilling that dream,

making goat cheeses and goat yogurt from

fresh goat milk at the Kosher Farm in the

Catskills. As testament to Alex’s excellent cul-

inary skills and talents, for more than 20 years

he has been a sought after chef for private par-

ties and affairs. After his arrival in the United

States, Alex worked as Chef at Yo Sushi at

Woodbury Commons. In Israel, Alex served in

the Israeli military as an officer and a police

station commander. After that brave commis-

    sion, he worked in the

    state department in Isra- el

    as an IT administrator

    for 16 years. At this

    event, Alex created deli-

    cious Levivot, and

    scrumptious handmade

    Sufganiot ( doughnuts)

    children. We thank the

    Jewish Federation of

Greater Orange County for making it possible!

Snack Bag Program Snack Bag Program Snack Bag Program

Our congregation is remarkable in its dedication to tikkum

olam, performing mitzvot and acting on our concern for com-

munity. We can be proud of ourselves for our continued gener-

osity in the face of the financial struggles we have faced re-

cently. For three years we have been providing after-school

snacks to those children at Sapphire Elementary School

grades K to 2 who qualify for free lunch and whose families

wish to participate. This mitzvah has been a great suc-

cess! The children love and benefit from the high quality

snacks that supplement their diet. Teachers, administrators

and parents are grateful and we are a visible presence in our

community by providing this extraordinary and needed ser-

vice. It is important to remember that SNAP (Supplemental

Nutrition Assistance Program), known to some as food stamps

has been severely reduced in the past 4 years and the needs of

families in poverty have increased dramatically. Last year we

slowly built up to serving 36 children.

Three weeks ago we began providing snacks

to 50 children grades K to 2 at Sapphire Elementary

School! Each child gets one snack per day for each day

of the week, that is 7 snacks per child per week during

the school year. We hope that those families who have par-

ticipated will participate again and that now that we have

more children in need, more families will join us to do this im-

    portant service.

Here is how it works best.

A family can sign up to do this themselves or make it easier

and cheaper by pairing up with one or two other fami-

lies. Each team shops and purchases 7 snacks per child for the

week. Remember, each child gets a snack each day. With 50

children that would be 350 snacks total. When shopping think

healthy! Most children already get plenty of sweets and emp-

ty calories. They need protein, fresh fruits and vegetables such

as apples, bananas, tangerines, oranges, raisins, cereal, hum-

mus, popcorn, cheese and crackers, carrots, tuna fish, ap-

plesauce, 100% fruit drinks, peanut or almond nut with crack-

ers, granola bars, etc. The school nurse asked that we not in-

    clude anything that needs refrigeration.

Each child has their own bag. The bags, which were donated

by Sara Silver, Lenny and Louise’s daughter can be found in

the coatroom by Wednesday afternoon. Your team packs the

bags and leaves them near the back door of the kitchen by

Monday morning when they will be delivered to the school.

Three children have allergies; one has a nut allergy, one a

chocolate allergy and one an allergy to pineapple. Make sure to

check ingredient labels carefully. Some products are made in

equipment used also for nuts, chocolate, et. Make sure that if

the bag is for one of those children with an allergy that it is

    clearly labeled.

Please help us continue this important mitzvah.

Even if you cannot physically shop and pack you can

still participate by making a donation to cover the

    costs.
