Why We March Again and AgainBy Erin Rosen

Fourteen days, three red pairs of eyes, seven hotels, four concentration

camps, Masada, 15,000 teens, and two survivors. That’s the March of the Living 2015.

Keith went on the March of the Living (MOTL) in 2010 with our son Andy, I went with Hannah in 2013, and we decided we both wanted to be with Zoe this past spring. One might ask why anyone would want to experience this exhausting, emotional trip twice. Going the second time solidified the powerful impact of this incredible trip. The MOTL is about bridging the gap from Poland - our past and our darkest days, to Israel - our future and hope, from teens to survivors, from high school to college, from experiencing to advocating.

The timing of the trip is brilliant, as the participants are high school juniors and seniors. This is a vulnerable time for many young Jews who struggle to keep their Jewish faith and spiritual identity on campus. The trip is led by Rabbi Guttman and Rabbi Havivi. The two Rabbis work tirelessly to educate our teens, to give them spiritual hope, a love of Israel and the ability to advocate as they head off to college.

A month after we returned from

the MOTL, Zoe had her confirmation at Temple Emanuel. This year’s confirmation class had 16 members - nine of whom had been on this year’s MOTL. The Temple students are asked to prepare a speech discussing what being Jewish means to them. All nine MOTL participants mentioned the impact the March had on shaping their Jewish identity. This was no surprise to Keith and I and we recalled the same with the Temple Confirmation class of 2010 and 2013. The Rabbis are diligent in recruiting for the MOTL, fundraising and seeking

private donations to make this trip affordable. Additionally we are proud of the fact that the Greensboro Jewish Federation offers $1,600 subsidies to our Greensboro Marchers.

It is extraordinary how our community and Rabbis make it a priority to send our teens to Israel. Listening to the speeches at Confirmation the vast majority of our confirmands have had an Israel experience, many as Eighth graders at B’nai Shalom, some at the Alexander Muss High School as juniors at the American Hebrew Academy, others with

BBYO programs and of course the MOTL. The fact that our high school seniors stand on the bima and discuss how these Israel Experiences have shaped them as Jews is incredible. Our family has been impacted by this life altering trip, the opportunity to march in the steps of our ancestors, to travel with survivors from our community and to experience the hope and future in Israel.

Erin Rosen is the Chair of the Board of Directors of North Carolina Hillel. Keith Rosen is the President of the Greensboro Jewish Federation.

PJ Library Greensboro held a lovely “PJ Popsicles in the Park” event on

May 31. Children enjoyed the beauti-ful weather and played together on the playground at Cascade Park and then came together to listen to a few PJ Li-brary books read to them while enjoying popsicles.

The PJ Library Committee is in the process of planning meaningful Jewish events for children and families for the coming year. If you would like to be

added to the PJ Library email list to learn about upcoming events, please contact Nikki Goldstein, PJ Library Staff, at [email protected] or at 336-855-5091. To register your child or grandchild (age 6 months – 8 years old) to receive a free Jewish-themed book or CD each month, go to www.pjlibrary.org. PJ Library is a program of B’nai Shalom Day School, the Greensboro Jewish Federation, and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

Thank you to our donors,

our volunteers and my col-leagues for the past year’s stellar efforts. Almost $5.2 million dollars passed through our doors for en-dowments, donor advised funds, the annual campaign, emergency campaigns and other desig-nated funds. We engaged hundreds of volunteers, served hundreds of individuals in need locally and thousands overseas, we attracted thousands to our website, and updated thousands via e-newsletter and newspaper. Here’s a glimpse from our An-nual Membership Meeting held on June 9, 2015.

Former Federation President, Susan Robinson, honored Mimi Levin with the Marilyn Forman Chandler Woman of Valor Award. Mimi was thanked for all she has done to build a Jewish foundation for our youth and for perpetuating our Jewish community for the future!

I am forever grateful to our hardworking and devoted staff. During the Torah portion Shelach, which was read recently in synagogue, the Land of Israel is referred to for the first time as a land of “Milk and Honey”. Each staff member was presented with specially flavored honey, in appreciation for their unique gifts, devotion and hard work on behalf of the Jewish community!

We honored Deborah Kintzing,

for her creative powers that she used in her position as Director of Campaign, Community Relations and Communications, to showcase the talents of our volunteers – at so many incredible events. Deborah created so many wonderful accomplishments. Several campaign chairs from out-of-town wrote remarks to honor Deborah (below are excerpts):

“Deborah always did it, whatever it was! We love and miss her and all of you.”

Peggy Bernstein (Colorado)

“Deborah brought dogged determination, an outstanding work ethic, a high degree of competence and abundant passion to her work at Federation. As someone who has worked with her over many years, I am grateful for substantial contributions she made to the Greensboro Jewish community. Yishar Koach, Deborah.”

David Altman (Brussels)

“In 2005 I was asked to take on the daunting task of Women's Campaign Chair for the Greensboro Jewish Federation. Deborah was there to support me, assist me and to laugh with me--Deborah was good at it all and will be sorely missed. My wish for you, Deborah, is that your future will be filled with projects that make you happy, fulfill your innate creativity and theatrical abilities, and, even more importantly, keep you laughing.”

Liz Winter Cohen (Florida)

And finally, Nathalie Ross (Texas) sent a lovely photo of Federation members with Deborah at the Darfur March on DC.

Dr. Steve Kutner, of Atlanta, the Founding Medical Director of Jewish Healthcare International, wrote about Deborah’s role in working with JHI, the Jewish Agency for Israel and Sheba Hospital to save the life of the young girl who affectionately became known throughout the Jewish world as the “Beltsy” Baby.

I thank Deborah for her many years of service to the Jewish community and to the Greensboro Jewish Federation. I will miss her tremendously and wish her well in the next chapter of her life’s journey.

This summer, we are looking to fill several vacant positions, work on re-vamping our Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet, start planning campaign events

and affinity group programs for the Fall and Spring, resume plans for the Cuba Mission and begin recruitment and planning for our Spring Interfaith Study Mission to Israel, continue developing

our Foundation’s affiliate relationships in communities beyond Greensboro and conduct our annual audit.

Thank you once again for your support and encouragement each and every day.

Maimonides Society: Overseas Connection

From the Campaign Trail

Thank you to our 2015 co-chairs, Victoria Milstein and Andrew Brod, for their involvement and commitment in leading the Federation’s annual campaign to success.

We began this year’s annual campaign with the crisis in Israel foremost in our minds. Together, we rallied to the cause raising more than $100,000 for Operation Protective Edge. We took an intergenerational look at what defines us as a community at our Campaign Leadership Launch and together we met the issues and challenges facing us in the year 5775. In January, we introduced 75 Days of Impact to our volunteers, solicitors and division leaders. 75 days that allowed us to make our Jewish community more caring and connected. 75 days that brought us together. In honor of our 75th anniversary, anonymous donors helped support a Campaign Match Challenge for new pledges of $75 or current contributors raising their gifts by 7.5%.

Together we grappled with the rise of anti-semitism globally and on our college campuses at our mid-year Kickoff and we reached out and asked others to show us

their UNselfie at our Super Sunday Telethon. We “gathered the guys” for our cause over deli and beers at the Forge and Gibbs 100 Brewery and along with the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro, we honored our Lions and Pomegranates at our Closing Women’s Donor Appreciation luncheon.

Together our community’s combined talents and strengths helped us exceed last year’s campaign total.

In 75 years of Living Generously, the Greensboro Jewish Federation has allocated millions of dollars to create and perpetuate vibrant Jewish life in Greensboro and around the world. Today, the Federation continues to

lead the community in addressing the most compelling challenges and opportunities facing Jewish life in the 21st century. Together with your support, Federation is here to respond to the needs of today because we were here yesterday. Together, we will be here for whatever comes tomorrow. Thank you for being part of our 75 year history. Thank you for living generously.

I take personal privilege in writing this Newsletter entry. It is with sadness

and honor that I remember my boss [al-though he never liked it when I referred to him as such], my mentor, my friend, the person who involved me in the Jew-ish Foundation of Greensboro, in fact, the Founder of our thriving Foundation: Leonard Kaplan z”l.

Many facts have been related and shared over the course of these weeks since his passing, of Leonard’s exceptional life achieving business success, philanthropic generosity, and memorable personal relationships. I won’t even try to summarize. I simply want to create a word-picture of the man with whom I worked closely when I had the privilege of being part of Toleo Foundation.

Leonard was a man with expansive and laser-focused vision. If we could have looked inside his brain it would have been shooting synapses, making connections, creating ideas twenty-six hours a day. Leonard had a penchant for numbers and could not only remember columns of figures (especially dollar amounts), but he could easily digest balance sheets and financial statements. As has been noted, he had a joke for every occasion and he could talk his way into any office, through any “gate keeper” - and usually get what he wanted, not with aggression, but with kindness. Leonard’s laser-focus and sense of what he wanted made it tough to argue with him. But often after thinking for a couple of days on a matter of difference, he was able to re-think a

position. Always with a twinkle in his eye and a respect of every human being, no matter a receptionist, a cleaning person, a professional, or a CEO. Leonard was only interested in making the world a better place. He didn’t want to do it one step at a time - but in leaps and bounds.

With this Newsletter come our condolences to Tobee, Randall Kaplan and Kathy Manning, Scott and Maeve Kaplan and Barry and Lynn Chasen--- and their families. Leonard Kaplan’s name is, and will be a blessing.

SHALOM GREENSBORO 5Foundationwww.shalomgreensboro.org

I am saddened yet honored to publicly express my gratitude and admiration

for Leonard’s leadership of the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro, his gener-osity to our community, and our long friendship.

As our Founding Chair, Leonard’s vision and leadership created our Jewish Foundation to ensure the future of our Jewish community. What foresight! He planted a seed and nourished its growth. The roots are now deep and strong, and we all benefit from the fruit.

I am especially indebted to Leonard for the trust and opportunity he gave me as the first Endowment Director of the Foundation over 18 years ago.

Leonard initiated and enhanced programs and institutions and created endowments to sustain them. His leadership, vision, and personal commitment to the present and future of the Jewish community have inspired many others as well. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to collaborate with him to build the Foundation and secure the future of our community.

Tobee and Leonard together established the first Family Philanthropic Fund and took the lead by endowing many institutions that

placed their funds with the Foundation, serving as role models who encouraged and challenged additional donors to establish and contribute to endowments. Their commitment and affection for each of these institutions have been inspiring and infectious for many in our community and beyond. I am also thankful for their generosity in renovating the second floor of the Federation building to house the

Foundation. Our beautiful offices can now accommodate our continued growth, as the tree and the fruit continue to thrive.

Leonard Kaplan was honored as the Founding Chair of the Foundation and a leader in our community with our Legacy Leadership Award, presented at the Jewish Foundation “Celebrate Our Legacy” event in 2004. He was honored again at the 18th Anniversary Foundation Chai Event in 2014, celebrating his vision and leadership. The Jewish Foundation of Greensboro has been repeatedly recognized as one of the most successful Jewish foundations in North America, in large part due to Leonard’s vision and ongoing leadership.

Beyond the extraordinary legacy Leonard provided for the Foundation, our community, and countless other charitable organizations to make the world a better place, I am most grateful for the personal inspiration and friendship that Leonard has given me. I will continue to be guided and inspired by his efforts to strengthen our community for future generations as I nurture and grow the Foundation.

Leonard has been my philanthropic hero. I will miss his insightful guidance, friendship, humor, and smile.

By Marlene Baruch, RN, MSN

I am honored to begin my position as your Congregational Nurse. I feel that this is the job I've been preparing for most of my life. I received my training as a registered nurse at NC Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and received my Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Nursing from Gardener-Webb University. In the past I've worked in the hospital setting as a floor nurse, as an office nurse in a large urology practice and as a research nurse participating in clinical trials.

I've more recently spent 14 years as a Breast Health Navigator working with cancer patients. The skills I've developed fit so well in my role as your congregational nurse - offering health education, wellness counseling, advocacy

and providing support to our clients and families.

I feel that my years of nursing experience, together with my experience of Jewish learning, conversion, adult Bat Mitzvah and Torah study have prepared me for this new role. Practicing in the Jewish community seems a natural extension of my nursing role and an opportunity to provide wholistic health services,

addressing the unity of mind, body and spirit.

I look forward to meeting many of you and to working with our older adults and their families. I can be reached Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at JFS at 852-4829, ext. 224 or you can reach me via e-mail at [email protected]. Please be assured that all interactions are kept confidential.

nized on Thursday, June 11 at the JFS Volunteer Luncheon as our "Vol-unteers of the Year."

Jen has been on the JFS Board for 8 years, serving as the Chairperson for two years. She is currently serving as the Past Chair. Jen says she is committed to the Jewish community and to her family and says that a quotation from Maya Angelou inspires her, “Nothing will work unless you do.” Among her other volunteer activities have been co-chairing her Young Leadership group, serving as the co- chair of the Federation Cuban Mission trip and as past chair of B'nai Shalom's Cadillac Dinner. She is the incoming PTC chair at BSDS.

Jen brings many talents to JFS. She helped develop and grow Children and Family programming including the pre-school food pantry program and a variety of parent education programs. She is committed to the food pantry and has promoted the need for donations with a passion. She served as the Chair of the Jewish Community Blood Drive. Jen also helped guide and grow the JFS budget, oversaw the increase in camp scholarships, and brought greater diversity to the Board. And Jen further showed her commitment

to improving the agency by representing us at the national annual conference for Jewish Family Services.

Carole Kaplan was our second honoree for Volunteer of the Year. She comes with some 40 years of Jewish community service. Her JFS service has been as chair for the last two years with "JFS Volunteers Plus." This is a unique program for those who are interested in getting more from their volunteer experience. This group meets monthly

with Gail Bretan to discuss and reflect on their volunteer service and to explore deeper connections to Judaism. Carole has helped organize, promote, and recruit, not to mention name, this program.

Carole says "I love volunteering." She has been Vice President of Beth David's Sisterhood, a member of the Beth David Board of Trustees, and has been head of the Beth David Library Committee. One of her favorite volunteer jobs is mentoring kindergarten children at B'nai Shalom in the reading program.

JFS is extremely grateful to both Jen and Carole for their time and commitment and is thrilled to have recognized and honored them this year as our "Volunteers of the Year."

BJH Grants Provide Essential Support for Older Jewish Adults in the Carolinas

Each year, grants from BJH Founda-tion, based in Greensboro, N.C. make

vital differences in the lives of many older Jewish adults throughout North and South Carolina. Funding assists non-profits that provide critical services to older adults in areas such as case management, meal and fellowship programs, health screenings and home visits.

This year, BJH Foundation has awarded 23 grants totaling more than $220,000 to help fund programs such as elder daycare, congregational nursing and social worker programs, home and community services, as well as guardianship and care management for older Jewish adults throughout North and South Carolina.

“Support from BJH Foundation can make a huge impact in the lives of these older Jewish adults,” says Andrew Aronson, president of the BJH Foundation for Senior Services. "As the older Jewish adult population moves through its senior years, healthcare and other resources needed for their support will be stretched to capacity. The grants

from BJH Foundation play a crucial role in helping fill some of these needs in the lives of this population."

BJH Foundation improves the lives of many older Jewish adults through its funding. Over the past ten years, BJH Foundation has awarded more than $1.8 million to qualifying non-profit organizations that support older Jewish adults. Welcome to Camp Gan Israel, part of the

largest and fastest-growing network of Jewish day camps in the world.

Gan Israel is dedicated to enriching the lives of Jewish children from diverse backgrounds and affiliations. CGI of Greensboro is a treasure trove of custom tailored activities, both classic and innovative, allowing campers to experience summer the way it should be: exciting, relaxing, eye-opening, and forever a source of childhood’s best memories.

Our counselors are chosen for their personal warmth and ability to understand and care for each child as an individual. Counselors have prior camp experience and are well trained in safety. Each counselor is a role model for our children, promising friendships that will last forever.

Camp would not be complete without our weekly trips featuring excursions to some of a child’s favorite destinations: Wet & Wild Waterpark, Celebration Station, Bowling, Airbound Trampoline Park, Gem Mining, and Swimming at Starmount
