Churchill Rose News from your Labour Councillors Summer 2017 - Delivered free by volunteers STANDING UP FOR EBURY BRIDGE ESTATE RESIDENTS Edgson House, boarded up on Ebury Bridge Estate Labour Councillors Jason Williams and Shamim Talukder have called for residents to be at the heart of any new plans At a meeting with Ebury Bridge Estate residents in June, Tory Council Leader Nickie Aiken admitted that Westminster Council’s plans for the regeneration of the estate had failed and they still had not found a developer. Churchill Councillors Jason Williams and Shamim Talukder believe the Council has mismanaged the whole process and are appalled that residents have been put through all this uncertainty. We will continue to lobby for Ebury Bridge residents to be kept fully updated, and for any final plans to be put to a referendum before they can go ahead. We have also lobbied for the inclusion of Cheylesmore House residents in discussions, as they will also be affected. We are proud of our community and the award-winning, pioneering Council and Housing Association housing on our estates - and we will continue to support all residents in our vibrant mixed communities. Westminster Council’s approach to the Ebury Bridge Estate regeneration project encapsulates their poor management and lack of concern for residents who have lived there, many for decades. The recent changes with CityWest Homes and the move to a call-centre approach does little to diminish concerns about how our estates are managed. We have also been working with Peabody Estate residents about repairs and maintenance of their homes. We have a strong track record of fighting for local residents and for the importance of social housing, and we pledge to continue to oppose any scheme which does not have full support of residents. STANDING UP FOR EBURY BRIDGE ESTATE RESIDENTS

Edgson House, boarded up on Ebury Bridge Estate

Labour Councillors Jason Williams and Shamim Talukder have called for residents to be at the heart of any new plans At a meeting with Ebury Bridge Estate residents in June, Tory Council Leader Nickie Aiken admitted that Westminster Council’s plans for the regeneration of the estate had failed and they still had not found a developer.

The recent changes with CityWest Homes and the

move to a call-centre approach does little to diminish concerns about how our estates are managed. We have also been working with Peabody Estate residents about repairs and maintenance of their homes. We have a strong track record of fighting for local residents and for the importance of social housing, and we pledge to continue to oppose any scheme which does not have full support of residents.

Fighting anti-social behaviour in Orange Square Work has been completed to introduce dividers on benches in Orange Square to prevent rough sleeping, following a successful campaign by Churchill Ward Labour Councillors working on behalf of concerned residents Some of the new benches, now with dividers

Acting on behalf of local residents concerned about anti-social behaviour in the area, Labour Councillors Jason Williams and Shamim Talukder have ensured that the benches have been fitted with dividers. We have also been working with the Council on the closure and removal of the disabled toilet on the square, following complaints from residents. Previously, we organised the securing of the entrances to the underground toilets which were being used for anti-social behaviour and drug use.

Cllr Jason Williams said: “We are delighted that our campaign on behalf of local residents in Orange Square has been such a success. We have been working hard with the Police and Council officers to ensure the problem is dealt with and residents can continue to enjoy the square. We cannot tolerate anti-social behaviour in our community.” We would like to hear from any residents with concerns about Orange Square. We will continue to monitor the situation and continue to work with the police and officers to ensure firm action is taken.

Chelsea Barracks We have followed up residents’ concerns about the Chelsea Barracks site - including Saturday working and noise and dust issues - with Council officers and Mace. Cllr Williams toured the site to inspect equipment installed to monitor compliance with planning conditions - and we are attending the Chelsea Barracks development residents’ liaison meetings.

Helicopter noise Councillor Jason Williams has written to the Ministry of Defence to raise residents’ concerns on low-flying helicopter noise in Churchill Gardens Estate and asked what can be done to mitigate the noise of the flights. Do let us know about any incidents you may have of these flights, including times and any other details.

A bridge too far Churchill Labour Councillors have criticised Wandsworth Council for pushing forward its controversial plans for a pedestrian and cycle bridge from Nine Elms to Pimlico - and are continuing to lobby against it. ''Wandsworth have continued to ignore local opinion about this expensive vanity project,'' says Cllr Shamim Talukder.

Road markings Churchill Labour Councillor Shamim Talukder has helped residents at 93 Ebury Bridge Road who contacted him about their 'Keep Clear' road signage - which had almost disappeared due to site construction traffic and road cleaning machines. Councillor Talukder contacted the Council and now an order has been raised to repaint the Keep Clear road markings.

Major works in Churchill Gardens Are you affected by the works taking place? Please let Jason and Shamim, your local Labour Councillors, know your concerns and any issues they can help to resolve

Churchill Gardens Estate: We're here to help during major works

The next phase of major works on Churchill Gardens Estate is set to begin on 14th August. Residents in the blocks affected should now have received notification and an invitation to a 'meet the contractor' meeting. We were aware of a range of issues during the last phase of major works - and have been working closely with CityWest Homes to ensure that lessons have been learned for future

parts of the programme. During the major works process, we will be supporting residents with a series of special major works surgeries - as well as visiting the relevant blocks to talk to residents. Please let us know if you have any concerns about the major works programme or any issues during the programme which we can help resolve.

Ride London 2017 The Ride London event - which has caused traffic and noise issues in previous years - went off well this year, thanks to work by Churchill Labour Councillors. We met with residents and organisers to ensure road closures minimised the impact of the event and there was improved signage. Please let us know about your experiences of the event so we can plan even better for next year.

Peabody Avenue Churchill Labour Councillors have been working with local residents, Council officers and police over recent concerns about anti-social behaviour in Peabody Avenue. As a result, the police have made several arrests in a joint operation with Council officers. If you are being affected by any anti-social behaviour in your area, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Road safety first In Semley Place, Councillor Shamim Talukder got the Council to install a brand new yellow box junction. Double parking by car-hire vehicles in the area resulted in an accident involving a child. ''Public safety is our top priority,'' says Shamim. ''We are continuing to work with Highways officers to ensure our streets stay safe.”

Fireworks noise We have raised residents’ complaints about a series of late-night fireworks displays at 11pm, which could be heard all across Churchill Gardens Estate. As a result of the complaints, the London Port Authority will look to limit future displays to before 10pm. We're glad we were able to win this commitment - although we have flagged that we still think that's too late outside 5th November.
