Catholic President, Jeff
Ohnoutka
I hope that you and your family are enjoying the final weeks of summer before school starts. I am looking forward to the new school year and wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of the things that have been happening around our school and provide some information for the start of school.
1. Columbus Catholic Schools will not require masking in our buildings. This is optional and of course, those that choose to do so are welcome to do that. We intend to proceed in a normal fashion regarding all aspects of the school day.
2. There has been controversy over health standards and critical race theory. Neither of those things is part of the curriculum of our Columbus Catholic Schools.
3. We hope to add a new bus to our fleet very soon to ensure safe and reliable transportation for our students and staff.

4. Over the summer we have installed LED lighting throughout our whole building. This is a very nice upgrade.
5. Work continues on 15th Street but we expect this congestion to be solved prior to the start of school.
6. Our school has hired Fr. Heithoff (retired priest from the Diocese of Grand Island) to work in our building three days a week. He is an excellent addition to our school and already knows our faculty and some of our students very well.
7. We will be using a Spanish teacher with Nebraska teaching certification via an online program. We will also have a classroom facilitator in the room with the students. Mrs. Sandy VanCura a retired Catholic school administrator will be in the classroom with our Spanish I and II students. I think it is an excellent alternative for a tough situation. Our Spanish IV students will be taking Spanish from CCC for dual credit. This class will be taught by Mr. Juan Lara who is a professor at CCC.
8. It appears that all meals will once again be free in the cafeteria for the 21-22 school year.
9. I am currently involved in discussions with UNK about how our students who are interested can be part of some of their STEM offerings. Mainly in areas of cybersecurity.
10. I want to welcome Mrs. Sandy VanCura (Spanish), Mr. Brady VanCura (Asst. Principal), Mr. Ryan Baker (Strength Training), and Mrs. Kristine Wurtz (Business) to our school. They will be excellent additions to our school.
As we transition into the 2021-22 school year I invite you to become an active member of our school. You are always welcome to be part of our school masses or other celebrations. Please prayerfully consider being a volunteer for Rock Talk. Our students need great role models that can help them grow in their faith. We will provide the training and you don't need to

Columbus Catholic Schools will have a new communication platform to connect with parents and students called SchoolMessenger that will replace Civil Dispatch moving forward.
SchoolMessenger is a phone, email and texting system that is hosted within PowerSchool. You will receive messages via text, email or a phone call. Also within PowerSchool you will be able to see past messages on your phone, computer and within your PowerSchool account.
We are close to launching this program to all our families, we are just waiting on some last minute technical matters to be resolved. Please be patient with this process as we roll this out. This program will be great to have our four schools interconnected and should make for an easier flow of communication for all our families, staff and students in the future.
If you have any questions regarding SchoolMessenger please contact Taylor Dahl at [email protected]

Annual AppealAnnual Appeal
The Shamrock Nation is so wonderful! You believe in the mission of Scotus Central Catholic, to provide a Catholic faith-based education to our students, and we so much appreciate your support! Your generosity provides the academic excellence that will challenge our students, the career development skills to prepare them for lifelong learning, and the faith development that will keep them grounded in their love for God, desire to serve others and respect for their individuality.
Through this fall’s annual appeal, Scotus will present a new opportunity for you, our stakeholders, to make a difference in the lives of our students. Your generosity will help Scotus continue its service to the Church, empower our faculty to be successful educators, make needed enhancements to the heating of the north end of school and explore the possible development of a safe drop off zone for our school families to use on the south side of the campus.
You have done so much to make Scotus a special place for both faith development and learning and we know we can count on your support again this year!
