Dear Friends,In the month prior to the Days ofAwe, ideally we all become “spiri-tual accountants.” I say that be-cause this it the most propitioustime of the year for us to take anaccounting of our souls. Wherehave we morally succeeded? Andwhere might we have we failed?
There is a famous teaching inPirke Avot (The Ethics of the Fathers) which states “Re-pent one day before your death. But how do we knowwhen the day before our death will be? We don’t.Therefore we should repent every day.”
Indeed the process of repentance does not begin withRosh Hashanah and culminate on Yom Kippur. Theentire month of Elul is the perfect time for personal re-flection and to ask for forgiveness and prepare us forthe the upcoming High Holy Days. During this monthwe sound the Shofar at the end of weekday morningservices. We regularly recite Psalm 27, the penitentialPsalm. And during the days leading up to RoshHashanah, we recite special prayers (Selichot) askingGod for forgiveness and prepare ourselves for the TenDays of Repentance.
The ability to petition and receive God’s absolution istruly an act of Divine grace. The Hassidic master,Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, compares the month ofElul to a time when “the king is in the field” and, in con-trast to when he is in the royal palace, “everyone whoso desires is permitted to greet him, and he receivesthem all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smil-ing face to them all.”
Rabbi Jonah of Gerona wrote, quoting Ecclesiastes:“There is not a righteous person on earth who doesonly good and does not sin” (Eccles. 7:20) However, the righteous subdue their evil inclination 100 times. Ifthey have succumbed to a sin once, they do not repeatit, to prevent becoming loathsome in their own eyes;and so they repent.”
Time and again we have heard “To err is human; to for-give, Divine.” (Alexander Pope) None of us is free ofsin. At one point or another, we have all fallen short ofour own standards and expectations, as well as those ofothers. We have not always lived up to our “best selves”and this time of the year affords us the opportunity toset things right, to beg for forgiveness from those whowe have wronged and from God, and most importantly,to resolve to live a more ethical life in accordance withthe dictates of Judaism. We also have the opportunityto emulate the Divine by forgiving others who mighthave wronged us. After all, why should God forgive us,if we refuse to grant forgiveness to others?
I am looking forward to sharing the upcoming High HolyDay season with you, the beloved members of our BethEl family. This will be the first time that I will be conduct-ing Selichot, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services to-gether with Cantor Angress and anticipate learning manynew melodies from our new Hazzan, who, like me, is hereto serve you year round. Cantor Angress has alreadyadded so much to our Shabbat and holiday services, andI’m sure that his voice and “Kavannah” (intent) will infuseour services with added meaning and spirit.
I hope to see you on Selichot evening (Saturday, Septem-ber 16 at 7:15 p.m.) which will feature an episode of Sein-feld dealing with a Jewish theme, followed by a briefdiscussion, refreshments, and our Selichot service begin-ning at approximately 8:15 p.m. And may we all enjoyRosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur together at Beth El,your destination congregation.
Wishing everyone a Shana Tova U’metukah - a good andsweet New Year.

Dear Friends,We are currently amidst the HighHolidays, which is considered thebusiest time of year for Jewish clergy.Rabbis all over the world are fine tun-ing their sermons and cantors arelooking over their music one lasttime. However, we are not exclusivelythinking about the Yamim Nora’im.Every year, our High Holiday season
also includes an additional holiday that is oft overshad-owed by Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: the holidayof Sukkot.
In the past, I wrote about the special Na’anu’im melodythat is chanted during the parts of the Sukkot service inwhich the lulav and etrog are ceremonially waved. How-ever, this melody is not the only thing that makes theservice special. Just like on Passover and Shavuot, theHallel service is recited on Sukkot. This service is re-served for celebratory holidays such as the Shalosh Re-galim and Rosh Chodesh. So why would Hallel not berecited on our biggest celebration of the year, RoshHashanah? Isn’t Rosh Hashanah our Jewish new yearand a time to celebrate?
To answer this question, we must first look at one ofthe oldest codexes of Jewish law, the Talmud (an ency-clopedic series of rabbinic commentary first transcribedin the Middle Ages). The Talmud mentions the follow-ing:
“The angels said to God: ‘Lord of the Universe, whydo the people of Israel fail to utter song before you be-tween Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?’ He replied,‘When the King sits on the throne of judgment and thebooks of life and death are open before him, can Israelutter song?’”
This is the only illusion in the Talmud that discussesHallel being recited on Rosh Hashanah. While the Tal-mud does not use the term “Hallel,” it is being referredto by the phrase “utter song.” Not only does this state-ment from the Talmud justify the omission of Hallel onRosh Hashanah, it also implies that Rosh Hashanah isnot a celebratory holiday. How could the Jewish NewYear not be celebratory? The period starting with RoshHashanah and ending with Yom Kippur is known asthe Aseret Y’mei Teshuvah or the Ten Days of Repen-tance. We all know the famous saying that comes fromthe piyyut (liturgical poem) Un’taneh Tokef: “On RoshHashanah it is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed.”Based on this, we can deduce that Rosh Hashanah, while celebratory in concept, is more reflective and sub-dued in practice.

Throughout my career, many people have asked why I donot use as many upbeat and “happy-clappy” melodies onthe High Holidays as I do on Shabbat. Sometimes it is dif-ficult to explain, but I feel the same reason why Hallel isnot recited would apply to my answer. Additionally, theHigh Holidays set a certain mood that prepares the con-gregation to face God and ask for forgiveness so that theymay flourish for another year. As the congregation’s spiri-tual (and musical) representative, I do not want to take thechance of spoiling a good outcome by using music that isinappropriate for the High Holidays. Yes, there will be up-beat melodies that are specific for the holidays, but as yourcantor I must do my due diligence and provide the holi-days with as much musical diversity as I can muster.
May we all have a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year andmay we all be inscribed in the Book of Life.

Shalom,This month we will gather in our syna-gogue for the High Holy Days. Whenyou attend services, put away your cellphones, close your mind to worldly tra-vails and try, for a short time, to be self-ish and think about yourself. Askyourself about the legacy you have leftfrom your activities of this past year. Not how much money you made or
spent, where you traveled or would like to go, or how yourfamily and associates remember you. But, were you kind, peaceful, charitable, loving, caring, forgiving, moral and eth-ical?
Our High Holiday services can be very meaningful. Whenyou attend our services, you can concentrate on RabbiLavinsky’s commentaries, listen to Cantor Angress’s ren-ditions of melodies, or ponder the liturgy on your own.You can close your eyes and just meditate.
We all have ambitions, desires, pleasures and passions. Butthese should be defined by our need to be a meaningfulperson. The goal is to focus on our innate desire to be re-spected by family and community. God does not do thatfor us, no matter how hard or sincerely we pray. Our timeon earth is not a predestined trip searching for the destinyof our soul in the hereafter. We are the designer of ourown fate.
These Days of Awe give us an opportunity to think of ourworld from a different perspective. The spiritual aspectsof the Jewish New Year are not like the secular New Yearwith resolutions of good eating habits and more exercise. It is the opportunity to reinvigorate a healthy, ethical andmoral lifestyle.
A Jewish education is the most important and effectivemethod we have to maintain the kind of dual lifestyle asJewish Americans that we all desire - whether it be AdultEducation, Preschool or Talmud Torah. Jewish education, like an Ivy League education, or a post graduate degree, does not automatically assure that we will be a terrific Jew,a huge success, or a competent professional. While thereis never a guarantee of happiness or fulfillment we shouldnot ignore the tremendous opportunities that Jewish edu-cation offers.
When our students attend the Beth El Talmud Torah, inaddition to learning Hebrew, customs and the Bible, wegive them something else: a positive sense of themselvesas Jews. Rather than feeling different or isolated, they feelproud, special and good about their Jewish identity. Ourstudents will learn what is expected of them: “Do justice;love kindness; walk humbly.” That is not what they willlearn on the athletic field. Nor will they learn it in theirsecular school education. Their Jewish heritage shouldmatter to them because it is part of what and who we are.
I hope I have the opportunity to see you during the HighHoly Days and wish you “l’ shana tova tikatev v’tichatem”- may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

Dear Friends,I hope you are enjoying the last weeks ofsummer and if you were vacationing, thatyou have returned home revitalized andare prepared for the New Year.
What I find incredible is that it has beenalmost 12 months since we were cele-brating the New Year 5777 and here weare coming into the High Holy Days andthe New Year 5778. More than the
number on the calendar (5778), what amazes me most isthat this will be my 12th High Holy Days celebration withyou (where has the time gone?) but sadly it will also bemy last as your Executive Director as the new year for mebrings my retirement. The thought of that makes me feelsomewhat melancholy but for today what I concern my-self with is pretty much the usual – did everyone receivetheir tickets? Will the sound system in the sanctuaryfunction as it should? Will the air conditioning keep uscool? Will there be ample places to park? Will everyonefind their seat? Will the building look as good as it shouldboth inside and out? Will we have enough ushers? Willthe Days of Awe go by without a glitch? With so muchto think about and to accomplish between now and then,I would be remiss if I did not say that I hope I will havethe opportunity to say hello and to wish you a wonderfulnew year in person.
Also, during the last year, we’ve seen many changes atBeth El. Cantor Goldman retired and Cantor Angressjoined the staff. More congregants have taken on thechallenge and become part of the Abe Meth Society ofTorah Readers. Our maintenance man, Han Ngo, re-tired after 15 years on staff. We’ve had students from thepreschool graduate and move up to Kindergarten, stu-dents from Talmud Torah reach young adulthood andtheir bar or bat mitzvah, former students that are goingon to high school or to college and many of our studentsthat have graduated from college this summer. We’ve es-tablished new programs and adult education classes thathave been very well received, and we continue with ourmitzvah projects throughout the year. We probably allknow someone who has brought a new little person intothe world and on the flip side – we probably have all lostsomeone who was near and dear in our lives. So manychanges in what seems like such a short time, just a year!
With that said (can you tell I’m feeling melancholy?), Iwish for you and those near and dear to you, a greatyear….one of peace, good health, much happiness andlots of love.

Dear Talmud Torah Parents,
It’s hard to believe that it’s that timeof year again - the beginning of a newschool year as well as the JewishNew Year. The celebration of thisNew Year gives us an excellentframework in which to study begin-nings, to look how much we’vegrown, and to reflect on where wehave been as well as where we areheading in the coming year.
Although you are not part of ourteaching staff, you are just as vital to the success of yourchild’s Jewish education. Your child receives the besteducation when you work closely with our dedicatedteaching team. It’s a parents enthusiasm, support, andinvolvement that inspires kids to do their best; and ateachers ability to teach their classroom curriculum. To-gether we can accomplish and achieve wonderful things.
There’s plenty of excitement ahead of us, including ournew Sunday only program for students in Pre-K thru1st grade, new staff to meet, new friends to make, visi-tors and field trips planned, and new skills to master…and I look forward to you sharing in those excitingtimes.
As a parent myself, my four kids are now out on theirown, I know just how fast time flies. One year they areoff to Kindergarten and seemingly in the blink of theeye, they are standing on the Bima becoming B’naiMitzvah.
I encourage you to fully embrace the moment and urgeyou to take the time from your busy schedule and in-clude yourself in what out Talmud Torah and youthprograms have to offer you and your kids. Connectingwith these programs are sure to build new friendshipsand strengthen your child’s Jewish identity.
In conclusion, let’s start off the Jewish New year, 5778,together as a team, and work towards the common goalof committing to your child’s Jewish education here atBeth El Talmud Torah.
Lastly, let’s not forget about our adult learners. We haveplenty of programs for you too as learning doesn’t stoponce you’ve completed your formal Jewish education. Why not consider joining in on one of our many offer-ings this year. You can find a complete description ofall our classes in last month’s echo, online, or feel freeto contact me or Alicia in the synagogue office with yourquestions.
Until next time, here’s your first of the Jewish triviaquestions I have for you for the month of Septemberwith more to follow each and every month in 5778.( An-swers can be found in next months echo.) Good luck…

PRESCHOOL NewsOur school year has started and every-one is settled into their classrooms andthe new routine. Being a year roundschool we had a lot of children start inthe summer at camp and now that theschool year has begun it is a little differ-ent for them. We have a lot of new fam-ilies – some who moved here from outof state and some with new infants. We
are very happy they are joining our Beth El family.
We have a strong PTO with Lindsey Doucett at the helm. The group started working on our annual fundraiser whichwill be “Alumni Luau.” Save the date for Sunday, January28, 2018, which for football fans is the weekend after theplayoffs and before the Super Bowl. Everyone is invited tosupport the preschool and to see old friends.
New to the preschool program this year is a Yoga class. Oneof our longtime parents is a yoga instructor in several publicand private schools around the valley. This year she is ableto fit us in to her schedule. The children really enjoy goingto the class, and it has many benefits. Yoga helps with bal-ance and coordination as well as focus and concentration. This is part of the mindfulness activities we are practicing inour school. It is amazing how doing relaxing exercises withthe children helps them with the rest of their daily activities.
The students are learning about the Jewish Holidays, RoshHashanah and Yom Kippur. Even the one year olds join inthe holiday room to hear the story, play games and do an artproject. The parents volunteer to make the event meaningfulfor all, and they have even learned new things from their chil-dren.
Beth El will have a Family Service for the High Holidays. Itis an interactive service and is a lot of fun for parents to seehow much their children have learned about the holidays.Babysitting is also provided for children ages 1 (must bewalking) to age 6 so that you can attend the adult services. Please contact us to sign up. I hope you will bring your chil-dren and be a part of our High Holiday services.
Next month we will learn about Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. We will build a Sukkah in some of theclasses and will also be visiting the community Sukkah atBeth El. The classes will make decorations and eat lunchor snack there during the holiday. On October 4 at 6:30pmyou are invited to Sukkot Under the Stars which is a com-munity dinner in the Sukkah. Everyone brings a dinner andwe eat together and enjoy some musical entertainment. It isa lot of fun for to meet and see other families from our com-munity.

Torah Fund 2018 Campaign is Here!As we celebrate the 100th year ofWomen’s League which is just begin-ning, and the 75th year of Torah Fundwhich is just concluding, we count ourmany blessings as individuals within thecommunity of Israel. We are blessed at
Beth El Congregation with clergy leaders who arethoughtful and learned; with children and grandchil-dren who bring vibrancy; and with the love of familyand friends – especially our Women’s League sisters– who are a strong support to us. How good are allthese blessings in our lives! The theme of this year’s Torah Fund Campaign isMah Tovu, meaning “how good!”, is a phrase that orig-inates in the Torah, in Numbers 24:5. The full phraseis Mah tovu ohalecha Yaakov, mishk’notecha Yisrael,How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings,O Israel! The Torah Fund Campaign helps support the educa-tion of future rabbis, cantors, educators and scholarswho will serve as leaders of the Conservative/MasortiMovement. Individual donors to Torah Fund at theBenefactor level of $180 or higher will receive the dis-tinctive Torah Fund pin in recognition of their gift. This year’s pin/pendant makes a treasured keepsakeof the Women’s League centennial celebration to wearwith pride! Please contact Torah Fund Chair DeborahLavinsky at 602-318-5068 to pledge your support forfuture generations of Conservative Jewish leaders.
