Student Project 1st Semester:

Window

The first two projects were designs of architectural elements. The goal of theseprojects was to develop an architectural vocabulary. The first of these projectswas an exploration into the experience created by a window. This was a teamproject carried out by Michelle Rook and myself. Our design intent was to usethe quality of glass that allows light to be both reflected and refracted. This is adesign for an urban theater. The time of the day that the window is observedfrom the interior and from the exterior is important to the design. At nightpeople will experience the window from the interior, during the day the publicwill see the window from the exterior. The importance is due to the relativelight levels outside and inside at these times

This second project was a roofdesign. I designed it as an outdoorpavilion in a forested area. Thedesign intent was to create a sense ofthe forest from the interior and toboldly describe the building as manmade from the exterior. This isaccomplished by using rectilinearshapes on the exterior and manybranchings of structure on theinterior that symbolize the branchesof a tree.

The ornament for the theatercomes from the structure. Fur-ther the structure was designed tobe covered with a translucent tarpwhich will create an image of alantern during night perfor-mances. The octagon is createdby four moveable modules withseating and four panels withentryways. The support areas forthe theater are below the seating.

Tourist Center:

A new building provides space for the tourist centerusing the iconography of the midwest farm. Thetourist center includes offices for city officials, aconference room, and an art gallery for local artisans.

Plaza and Sculpture:

The plan also includes a plaza which continues the iconography of the midwestfarm and pays homeage to the importance of the railroad to Monticello. Thesculpture symbolizes the fall of the railroad in importance in the last half ofthe 20th century.
