COLORED CARNATIONS
Fill a glass or vase about ¾ full with water, and add blue food coloring to the water. Add enough coloring to make the water a dark blue. Cut the stem of a white carnation at an angle and place the carnation in the vase with the colored water. Over the next couple of days, the carnation will turn blue! Repeat the process with different colors. Experiment with mixing more than one color in the water. See if you can make green (yellow & blue), purple (blue & red) or orange (red & yellow). Try cutting the up the stem half way to the flower. It should look like the flower has 2 stems. Cut each bottom at an angle. Place each end in a different vase with a different color water. The flower will turn 2 different colors!

COLOR MIXING WITH ICE CUBES
Make red, blue and yellow ice cubes by filling ice cube trays with water and adding food coloring to the water before freezing. After the cubes have frozen, fill three c lear plastic cups with hot water. Ask children to predic t what they think will happen if a red cube and a blue cube are dropped into the hot water. What color with the water become when they melt? (Purple) Repeat the process with blue and yellow cubes. What color will the water become? (Green) Repeat a third time with red and yellow cubes. What color will the water become? (Orange) Experiment further by adding different colored cubes to the new colors you have created.
PINWHEEL
To make a pinwheel, cut out the large square on the next page. Use a heavy weight paper. This square has been divided into four smaller squares. Do not cut these squares. Only cut the large outline. Next color each of the individual squares a different color. Using a ruler, divide the back of your paper into four equal boxes just like on the front. Color these boxes different colors. Next, cut along the diagonal dotted lines that are printed on the front of your paper. Locate the small black dots next to the diagonal lines that you just cut. Using a pushpin, poke holes through each dot. Now bring each dot to the center of your paper. Push the pushpin through the holes and then through the center of the paper. Push the pin into a pencil or dowel. Be sure to push it in firmly so that it will not fall out. If necessary, use a small hammer and gently tap the push pin to plant it more firmly in the pencil or dowel. Do not push it in so completely, however, that the pinwheel is not able to move freely. Blow into your pinwheel and watch it spin!

RAINBOW
Using the rainbow form on the next page, you can create a rainbow with many different textures. Remember that the colors of a rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (purple). For a simple project, use crayons or paint to complete your rainbow. For a project with more texture, glue bits of crumpled, colored tissue paper to the rainbow form. Another option for texture is to color dry rice with food coloring and then glue the rice to your rainbow. Be creative and use your imagination!
