Sharavathi – The Yearly Newsletter of the Kannada Koota of Montreal, Canada
President’s Report
I am happy to report that we have had another good year. Our normal
programs were done as usual: Picnic, Ganesh puja, Deepavali and Ugadi. We did
bring in some varieties to four programs to make them more attractive. Our
committee members participated in cultural programs both in Ugadi and Deepavali
celebrations with dance and drama events. We are getting better attendance which
is a good and healthy sign.
Our children are definitely showing better participation in terms of singing, variety
& traditional dancing and playing instrumental music. They need encouragement
from parents and professionals. Veena Sreeranga has been a strong driving force in
these co-ordinations and I hope she will continue to contribute. We certainly want
more from our members both in terms of direct participation and indirectly helping
bring out the talents in their family. It is only then high quality entertainment items
can be selected and professionally presented.
On the cultural side, we discussed collaborating with our sister communities – the
Tamil Association and Telugu Association to do a joint Deepavali program. Some
discussion also went in and we did some common programs which were given with
some modifications at all three cultural events. This should be a good opportunity
for cultural integration. However we had to give it up the Joint-Deepavali since we
could not find a large hall to hold 500 plus at an economic rate. There was clear and
demonstrated interest from all three organizations. Kishan was a driving force in
this regard and perhaps he can continue exploring. If we turn it in to an
entertainment musical, I think even the BSS may be interested.
We are also finding innovative ways to bring variety to our dinners. We have tried
several innovative methods for meeting the catering needs so that our families don‟t
have to cook. Now our food is fully catered. Everyone can enjoy the program and
have a delicious dinner. We do need to get feedback so we can effectively expand
our varieties. We don‟t want to neglect our own Karnataka favorites. We can
always go back to our families for our traditional as well.
We need to update our website. It is barely functional and requires a knowledgeable
web manager. Currently it is being maintained by part timers. We have approached
a web developer for a better working design. We need some volunteers with good
web design experience. We have many documents that we can post on the web
some for general public and others for members only. They need to be carefully
supervised and maintained.
We have three new additions to our Donor/Patron list this year. We would like to
welcome our new Donors Vijay Kumar Badagi and Swaroop Visweswaraiah and
Patron Sowmyalakshmi Subramaniam. Again, our committee members and their
families have worked very hard to bring you entertainment programs, good dinner
and relaxing ambience. While enjoying the show, please do appreciate their
contributions. I would like to thank our committee for their wonderful support
throughout the year. Everyone has contributed, some may have done more and
others may be less.
Our sponsorship activities are taking a better turn. We need sponsorship support.
One frequent excuse has been we don‟t have Donation refund status. We have
started giving 50-60% refund instantaneously (with admission tickets) while
recognizing their sponsorship. We never get that much refund from Revenue
Canada! Do consider contributing to one event in a year. That will help bring better
quality programs, better food and better ambience.

President’s Report (cont’d)
KKM Events for the year 2011-2012
Ugadi & AGM 2011 – April 30. St. Andrews Church, St Lambert. This was the first time we had our
Ugadi program here. It was a nice but smaller place than our previous location. It was less expensive
also. In addition to the regular entertainment events, a unique program was contributed jointly by
children of our three cultural associations entitled Dashavathara coordinated by Lakshmi Tata and
Kathak dance by Samhita and Keerthana Bhat from Albany, whose parents are long time friends of our
Parvathi and Rama Bhat, The program was well conducted by MCs Veena and Indrani. We had
excellent attendance and also had a fully catered dinner. We produced the first color Sharavathi during
this event that was edited by Rajesh Duggavathi and Swaroop Visweswariah. We had excellent
sponsorships for both the event and the Sharavathi. The AGM was a bit of a mess because the program
got finished late and everyone was hungry! After the program it was decided we should not keep the
AGM at the end, but rather in the middle. The new committee was selected and you see them listed
elsewhere in the Sharavathi.
Picnic – 2011 - July 30. Angrignon Park. We routinely had our picnic at Mont Royal Park. In 2010, we
tried Oka Beach which was well appreciated. We move to this place this year although this was not the
first time we had picnic here. The attendance was not fantastic, but I think we had a peak number in the
70-80 range. We sure had lots of fun. In addition to the usual games, we also played a full team cricket
match. It was nice.
Ganesha Puja 2011 - September 10. Hindu Mission, 955 Bellechasse, Montreal. Again this year, we did
our Puja at this venue but this time it was conducted Dr Rama Bhat. Dr MNS Swamy who has
conducted our Ganesha puja for the past two decades (or more?) had to be away. Dr Rama Bhat
conducted it quite well keeping it simple. This event saw a large number of sponsorships. Some were
given to KKM while others were directly given to the Temple. We gave $350+ to the temple and they
were very pleased. The ambiance was good. It was well attended by over 150.
Deepavali 2011 - November 12. St. Lambert Church Hall, St Lambert. This was again a well-attended
event with more than 175 attending. Half way through we had to order 50% more dinner meals! Our
programs were well coordinated. Our entire committee participated in the cultural events. The
dance/fashion show “Integration” was a grand success – thanks to Veena for coordinating this in spite of
the difficulty imposed by her pregnancy. The event highlighted costumes from a number of states in
India and was well appreciated. We had children‟s program, instrumental music and songs as usual. The
other major event during this program was the Drama coordinated by Satish Dutt and played by Koota
members. Rajesh‟s performance as „Karegowda‟ was outstanding. For the first time several MC‟s
(Swaroop, Arunchandra, Vijay, Indrani, Dinesh, Sheela) hosted the show as a group. Again the St
Lambert Church Hall was full! We had excellent sponsorships. Thank you to all the sponsors of all
events. For the last couple of years, the attendance, participation and sponsorships have been increasing
for every even and this year we have been exceeding collections well over $1000. That is why we could
afford fully catered dinner.
Ugadi & AGM 2012 – April 14. St. Lambert Church Hall, St Lambert. We have mostly had our
programs at this facility. This is a clean auditorium, and has place to warm up our food, make coffee/tea
as we like and a nice outside area for chair-tired kids and adults to run/walk around with quick and safe
access to washrooms all inside safe building away from traffic. This has allowed us to save a lot of
money as well. This year‟s program is in front of you to enjoy. We have variety entertainment and food
specials. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Sharavathi is a river
which originates and flows
entirely within the state of
Karnataka in India. It is one
of the few westward
flowing rivers of India and
a major part of the river
basin lies in the Western
Ghats. The famous Jog
Falls are formed by this
river. Jog Falls is the
highest waterfall in India.
The Sharavathi river
plunges 253 metres into a
deep gorge here in four
different segments called
as Raja, Roarer, Rocket and
Rani. The magnificent Falls
of Gersoppa or Jog, that is,
the waterfall, are
unquestionably the grandest
natural beauty in
Karnataka, rich as it is in
splendid scenery. The river
itself and the region around
it are rich in biodiversity
and are home to many rare
species of flora and fauna.

I miss you mom This is for you mom, I love you. I miss you terribly, mom I can’t believe you’re so far away I can’t believe this happening I don’t know whether life be gay Those times we had together Keep coming back to me Those shopping sprees, eat outs And all the movies we went to see I miss all out talks and walks And I miss the love you showed I miss the amazing guidance And all the stories you told I remember the pains you took To make sure I was okay No one can ever again Love me in the same way You are the best, mom You have a heart of gold And what hurt me now Are the things I left untold My love for you, mom Will never go away In fact it only grows Intensely each day
I hope that somewhere Wherever you may be You can hear me now And read this poem and see This poem is not enough for you, mom Nothing will ever be You are more than the sun and the moon And the earth and the sky to me I will continue to make you proud I’ll continue to shine I will always remember that You heart rests with mine

My Favorite Actor
Who doesn‟t know Dr. Rajkumar in Karnataka? Dr. Rajkumar

The information about Dr. Rajkumar, as I got from the Internet
are:

Father: Singanalluru Puttaswamayya
Mother: Laxmamma
Brother: Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Varadaraju
Sister: Sharadamma
Wife: Parvathamma

Rajkumar

Dr. Rajkumar did exercise and Yoga every day, even when

I like Dr. Rajkumar, because his movies have interesting stories.
He acted in devotional, social, historical, dramatical, romantic,
