Control charts

4Control charts
Control charts for Attributes
✓ A nonconformity refers to a quality characteristic and a nonconforming unit refers to the overall
product.
✓ A unit may have many nonconformities, but the unit itself is either conforming or nonconforming.
✓ For example, a scratch on a metal panel is a nonconformity. If several scratches exist, the entire
panel may be considered nonconforming.
✓ Select your attribute control chart based on whether your data follow a binomial or a Poisson
distribution.

Attributes control charts for binomial data
✓ Values for binomial data are classified into one of two categories such as pass/fail or
go/no-go.
✓ Binomial data are often used to calculate a proportion or a percentage, such as the
percentage of sampled parts that are defective.
✓ You can use either the P chart or the NP chart to plot your nonconforming units. The
main difference between P and NP charts is the vertical scale.
1) P charts show the proportion of nonconforming units on the y-axis.
2) NP charts show the whole number of nonconforming units on the y-axis.
✓ The chart that you choose does not affect which points are out of control. Will continue further….

What not to do at a new workplace
When you start working or change your job, make sure you don’t commit mistakes that can harm your
career progressive and reputation.
• You might be professionally qualified to take on the challenges of your new job, but what about your
behaviour?
• Keep this check-list in mind to ensure that you don't make any major professional faux pas.
Don't ignore office culture
• Every office has its own work practices and norms of functioning.
• Adhere to these, instead of doing as you please or following the previous office's schedule.
• It could be the way the office handles communication, paperwork or work flow, or even the dress
code it follows.
• If you try to be different or show disregard, you risk being isolated by colleagues or offending the boss.

Don't be too silent or talkative
• It is natural to feel intimidated in a new set-up, but don't isolate yourself.
• You may be seen as snobbish or one with low self-esteem.
• On the other extreme, talking too much, pulling rank or flaunting your credentials may not
go down well with your team, which may sideline you.
• Instead, show humility and keen ness to learn new work, and be prudent.
Don't mention the previous office
• Comparing your new workplace with your previous organisation will be seen as criticism and
is bound to upset your bosses.
• If you are in a managerial position, don't be in a hurry to change the work systems.
• Absorb the existing processes, and if you must initiate changes, do it gradually.
