I am most thankful to say that I believe this year’s
Easter Celebration was one of the best celebrations of
my life! It wasn't as if I didn’t expect it to be wonder-
ful, Tom, and I, along with many others put many
hours of thought, preparation and rehearsal into pre-
paring for our Holy Week. Thank you all for your
dedication to our church, and proclaiming the mes-
sage of Christ Crucified and Risen!
Thanks to all who helped set up for Easter morning
after the Good Friday worship and then showed up
very early on Easter morning to set up the cross, altar,
chairs and everything! Our tribes ROCK!!! Be sure to
participate in your tribe, or if you can’t, BE SURE
TO FIND A SUBSTITUTE ON YOUR OWN. DO
NOT FORCE THE TRIBE CHAIRPERSON TO
FIND YOUR REPLACEMENT FOR YOU.
Nothing “just happens,” even for what it takes to pro-
claim the Easter message. The Old Testament proph-
ets foretold of a Messiah/Savior who would enter Je-
rusalem humbly on a colt/donkey, and would be un-
justly accused, tried, forced to suffer and killed. Jesus
prophesied at least three times to his disciples and fol-
lowers that after they arrived in Jerusalem, he would
be arrested, scourged, killed on the cross and after
three days, arise from the dead. There was much plan-
ning going on for centuries before Jesus finally con-
quered death and stepped out of that tomb. Easter was
not a coincidence.
But with all this planning, did you HEAR the mes-
sage that was proclaimed? Yes, the setting on the
beach was beautiful, the choir sang with great passion
and the texts made the point very clear, but did the
Good News that Jesus has defeated the power of
death through his own obedience to that promise of
salvation, permeate into your heart, mind and soul?
The message of Easter is a TRANFORMATIVE mes-
sage, changing how we LOOK at our surroundings
and SEE our neighbor. The message also changes the
way we HEAR the words of our neighbor, and ex-
pands our capacity to be compassionate and empathet-
ic to all things in our world. The Easter Gospel chang-
es the way we THINK about ―our‖ world and helps us
to understand that the world we live in is a total gift of
love from a very generous Creator. We are responsible
for its care and upkeep.
Have you allowed the Gospel message of Easter to
transform you and your perspective on life? Have you
allowed the Gospel message of Easter to change you
from somebody who might obsess over small and friv-
olous things, into somebody who now lives within the
promise of eternal life? Have you allowed the Gospel
message of Easter to transform you into a person who
lives in the presence of God each and everyday?
As Easter Person, we now live within the loving and
caring hands of God, now and forever. Our neighbors
or the stranger is no longer a stranger, but another per-
son loved by God. The oceans and valleys are not giv-
en to us to be exploit just for profit, but to be cared for
and given the highest level of stewardship.
Through the resurrection of Jesus, we have been Re-
Created into a new people with new eyes, ears, heart,
mind and soul. Look at the world with new eyes, hear
the words of your neighbor with a new heart, and
cherish the world we have been given with a new soul!
Dance, sing, work, play, worship and live in the Good
News of New Life, New Hope, New Mercies, New
Love, and a New Understanding of Justice!
See you in Church!
Pastor Tim
NOTES FROM TOM
I’ve always been impressed by the people who pay
attention to detail but never lose sight of the big pic-
ture. I’m sure you have known people like them. They
are the ones whose lives seem to be guided by a vi-
sion. Even though they may struggle to keep going
from day to day, their eyes are focused on what lies
ahead.
It is like a man I know. He is a terrific gardener. It is
amazing to watch him at work and to see what he has
done. He is able to visualize how his garden will
grow. He almost appears to be on a first-name rela-
tionship with his plants. Yet, as intimate as he is with
their individual growth characteristics, he is able to
see the entire garden. He can visualize what his gar-
den looks like now, as well as what it will look like in
a year, three years, or ten years.
For most of us, I fear, we see our gardens as they ap-
pear today. I’m not sure that most of us see the big
picture of our gardens. The same is true of our lives.
Too often we work from day to day. We are more
than aware of the struggles and the joys, the delights
and the frustrations. But we don’t readily see our-
selves in God’s big picture.
We are so focused on our lives, and understandably
so, that we can lose sight of the big picture. The chal-
lenge is not to let the details of our daily lives prevent
us from seeing Jesus.
How do we do that? We do it with each other, and
with God. We do it in worship, in Bible study, in de-
votions, in prayer, in quiet time, in both looking in-
ward and looking outward. We do it by not letting
anything pull our eyes away from Jesus.
The eighth-century Irish hymn says it this way:
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art:
Thou my best thought both by day and by
night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my soul’s shelter, and thou my high
tow’r,
Raise thou me heav’nward, O Pow’r of my
pow’r.
Light of my soul, after victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
(―Be Thou My Vision,‖ trans. Mary E. Byrne, set in verses by
Eleanor H. Hull)
Keep singing as together we keep our eyes and hearts
focused on the resurrected Jesus.
See you in worship—

This missionary communication was received from Doctor Jim and Carolyn Brown, missionaries in Cameroon. –Editor We’re writing from the US again. Each Sunday since
our return we’ve worshipped in a different church,
and sometimes spoken during the week at others.
We’ve met many people: some for the first time in
person after years of e-mail contact, old friends, new
friends, and friendships renewed.
When not traveling, we’ve been working on complet-
ing the two online courses we must take. And, both of
us have Continuing Education credits to complete in
order to renew our licenses.
In the midst of all this, God continues to provide for
our support needs through your generosity. Currently,
more than 100% of our one-time expenses have been
met and more than 50% of our monthly budget.
We’re still hoping and praying all the support needed
will be in by early April so that we can make plans to
return soon after training is complete in late April.
Meanwhile back in Cameroon, the work goes on. We
hear from our residents and their wives regularly and
they are often on our hearts and minds. We're espe-
cially thankful for the surgeons who have traveled to
Mbingo during this time to help with teaching. And,
we're excited about some of you who we've talked to
along the way about coming out in the future. Thanks
again for all of your prayers, support, and encourage-
ment, without which we couldn't be a part of this min-
istry.

Pastor John Lunn may be our
Resident Missionary for fall 2012
We have a very exciting possibility that our adopted mis-
sionary, Pastor John Lunn, may be our ―Missionary in Resi-
dence‖ for October, November, and December, 2012.
Pastor John was a member of our congregation several years
ago. He came back to talk to us in October 2008 about his
work as administrator of Phebe Hospital in Liberia, prepar-
ing it for reopening, after its destruction during the civil war
there, and about palliative social and health care needs of the
chronically ill or disabled in third world countries.
He returned in August 2010, to tell us about his work at
Vellore Christian Medical College in south India, helping
the Government to establish palliative care systems through-
out India.
Pastor John will be between assignments, returning from his
work at Vellore, and before he is stationed in Tanzania by
Global Mission of ELCA, to supervise the posting of volun-
teers for Medical Missionary work in Africa and Asia.
Pastor John Will Be Leading Special Meetings and Other
Activities.
While he is here, we will have wonderful opportunities to
have him lead special meetings about the world-wide need
for palliative care, and on other health needs in underdevel-
oped countries.
Anyone interested in visiting a mission field will be able to
meet with him and obtain first-hand information about how
he or she can benefit from such a visit, or do something use-
ful in a short visit to a mission field.
In addition, we hope we can arrange for him to hold meet-
ings with our sister Hukilau Churches, to stimulate and edu-
cate them about how they can also help and support this mis-
sionary work.
Pastor John had worked with people in the Hospice care
community in Honolulu, and we hope he will be able to re-
new contacts with them, and their interests in outreach to the
desperately needy folks who live in communities with very
limited health care and social support systems.
Pastor John Will Need a Home and a Car for Three
Months.
If we are to host him, we will need to find suitable accom-
modation, preferably in East Honolulu, with enough privacy
for entertaining and interviewing visitors, and a car for him
to use while he is here.
We would be very grateful to any congregation member
who can offer Pastor John a home or a car. Please contact
Pastor Tim, the Church Office, or Ted Hsia if you can help,
or if you have any questions.
