YOUR FAVOURITE MONTHLY NEWSPAPER FIRST EDITION WWW.WESTLONDONSHARKS.CO.UK
HEAD SHARK WELCOMES YOU Sharks Chairman Mike Byrnes welcomes you We are seeing many changes occur within the Rugby League community game. At a National level, a major
restructure is planned for the game in the near future. Rugby league is expanding both within and outside of its
homelands. The RFL plan is to move to a single summer season. This is a great future opportunity for our club. Here
at the Sharks, on the playing field, we have attained many of our goals e.g. win National & Local competitions for Men
and Women. Off the field we have a unique club culture, demonstrated with a Global Alumni of many 100’s, reflecting
our cross gender, multi-culture, social approach. So in 2010 it was time to take stock, plan the future, and look at
making some changes. Foremost was getting the foundation in place. The best possible home for the club. One
which can support growth, embraces our culture, and gives our players the best possible facilities (e.g. changing
rooms for women). It took much longer than anticipated, but in Chiswick RFC we have found a great partner. It is a
major landmark in the history of the Sharks. It can only be successful if we all work toward building the partnership.
Welcome to the Sharks and to Chiswick. It’s summer 2011 & the Future of the Sharks is ’you’. Let’s have success and
fun writing the next chapter of Sharks history together....Mike (Byrnsie).

BARNSEY RETURNS
FOR ANOTHER
SEASON
Barnesy was looking to do more recruiting and
take a step back from coaching in 2011 but
after the coach he initially had in mind pulled
out, Barnesy has decided to take up the senior
coaching position again. With a young child on
the way, I think Barnesy has got his work cut
out for him this year. Also I am sure Barnesy
does not want to lose anymore hair from the
stress. After speaking to the players though
they are happy that the “Old Man” did not step
down from the coaching role.
“Another season and this time at our new home.
We want to make this work but it’s all up to
players to turn up to training” says the old man

try rugby league in the summer. With the talent seen at training I think this could be another successful year for the Sharkettes.
There has been a lot of focus and work done by the RFL to promote women’s rugby league and we are certainly seeing the benefits from the training
sessions they are organizing at rugby union clubs.
Ebony Blake who is the South East Regional Development officer who has been driving the project was really happy to see the amount of women that
have been training with Sharks. “I am really delighted that the training sessions we are holding at the Rugby union clubs at the back end of the union
season is working”. Team Manger Christina Ovenden is certainly going to have a busy season trying to make sure the newcomers are kept up to speed
and also interested. This season Donny Lam will be doing a lot of coaching work with the Sharkettes Team to make sure the new players are getting up
to speed with the rules and plays and also make sure the existing players for Sharks have not taken their fin/foot off the pedal.

ARNIE IS
STILL GOING
STRONG
The Sharks Ladies team kicked off the new season with a great selection
of players to choose from. The 2010 Season was a year where the
Ladies struggled to get numbers to a fixture or training. This year we
certainly are spoilt with numbers. It’s great to see a lot of the union
women coming down to try rugby league in the summer. With the talent
seen at training I think this could be another successful year for the
Sharkettes. There has been a lot of focus and work done by the RFL to
promote women’s rugby league and we are certainly seeing the benefits
from the training sessions they are organizing at rugby union clubs.

Note to you young fellas out there, if you want to take a leaf out of
someone’s book on how to play both games, still at a good standard then
take one out of Graham Robbing’s ( AKA Arnie) book. Here is a man who is
truly built for the game. Arnie is the only original Shark still playing now. He
has seen many players come through the club and Arnie is still out gunning
some of the young players. The great long service Arnie has spent at Sharks
is truly inspirational. I truly would like to raise my glass to “ARNIE”. Well done
old son.

CHISWICK
RFC NEW HOME FOR SHARKS The 2011 season sees Sharks play out of their new home at Chiswick RFC.
Both Clubs started discussions about the move late in 2010 and finally agreed
just before the 2011 Sharks season kicked off. Chiswick RFC are very positive
about the move. I asked Kelvin Campbell (Chairman of Chiswick Rugby ) about
the move so far and he said “So it finally happened, West London Sharks now
at home in Chiswick W4, after months of planning and plotting Chiswick are
really pleased to have the Sharks at W4.. . It's gone very well with the guys
settling well, all opposition have found it to be a friendly atmosphere and Donny
and Barnesy have had a chance to practice their BBQ skills.... I know Donny
works for Vodafone but I have to say I think the future is bright, if not orange”
says Kelvin.
2010/2011 Rugby Union season at
Chiswick also attracted some Sharks
players down to have a run out in the
cold. Paul and Chris Towells, Barnesy
and Donny all turned out for the Chiswick
Chiefs who won their league this season
and got promoted. It was a good laugh
and run around for the Towellsy brothers
especially as they are die hard league
boys. Sharks are hoping to secure this
arrangement with Chiswick long term.
Already we are seeing some of the
Chiswick players coming down to training
and also having their first game of Rugby
League.

BBQ AFTER
TRAINING A HIT Sharks welcomed the new summer by having a
BBQ after Training on Thursday 6th of May.
The BBQ went down well with a great turnout.
Thanks to Towellsey and Cookie who cooked the
BBQ while the rest of the team were put through
their paces by coach Barnesy. The BBQ is
something the Sharks will do frequently.

RHINOS
EDGE
OUT
SHARKS First Fixture of the 2011 Season
Sharks started the game with the first try of the game in about 8 minutes
from kick off. For some reason Sharks took their foot off the pedal after
that. Rhinos answered back with 3 tries going into the half. Sharks were
giving away too many penalties back to back. Sharks looked tired and they
should do after the amount of sets they defended on the line.
It would be unfair for me to say the only reason the Rhinos won was that
the Sharks were having a poor game. Rhinos capitalized on the Sharks
mistakes which a good team should do and for that they were the better
team on the Day. Player of the day for Rhinos, hooker Cookey certainly
took advantage of the opportunities presented to them on the day.
Dave Madigan just held up short of the line
Sharks fought back but it was too little too late. Storming games from the
young boys, new and old Sharks players. Louis, Madigan and JP played
well from the front, Sammy and Callum making the yards out wide. Sharks
are missing key players which they hope to have back next week after the
bank holidays. A typical start to a new season for Sharks. Captain
Terrence knew this first game was going to be a challenge.
It's always a good arm wrestle when the two teams meet. It's back to the
drawing board for Sharks.
Player of the day for Sharks was Callum McCormack.

WEATHER
THE STORM
AT THE
SHARK CAGE
After the Sharks women's emphatic 70-16 win over Coventry Bears it was
the turn of the men to try and register their first league points of the
season.
Although the game may not have been the greatest advert for Conference
Rugby League, what it lacked in overall quality, it more than made up for in
pure endeavor. Both teams were looking for their first wins of the season
and the Sharks edged this particular London derby 28-18 thanks in no
small part, to a brace of tries from debutant Ben Sutherland.
The Sharks man of the match scored a try in each half, the second a
wonderful individual effort on the right flank. Further tries from prop Gerry
Dolan, the kiwi duo of Rob McLean and Damian Mohan plus a score from
Craig Kruger were enough for the Sharks to get the two points, although
Storm where never completely out of the game and certainly proved a
stern test. West London Sharks would once again like to thank South
London Storm for agreeing to switch the fixture between the two sides to
Chiswick.

BARMAN STEVE A BIT OF

play out some tunes to entertain the party.

SHARKETTES
First fixture for 2011
The 2011 season for the Ladies kicked off with the first of four tries from
Jayne at 49seconds from Kickoff. That's got to be a Sharks record for
the quickest try from. Chrissy had a lot of players to choose from and
with a vast majority playing their first game of Rugby League, it was
going to be an interesting game in terms of players finding their feet.
Coventry had a full team out with only one or two reserves. Coventry
answered straight back with an equaliser try. Coventry number 13 had a
solid game putting in some big hits but that did not phase the Sharks.
Sharks played a basic but structured game. The “Twos” play seemed to
work and made it difficult for the Bears to defend. Going into the second
half Sharks were really in control of the game. Sharks senior players
Christina Ovenden, Caroline Arthur, Kim Davies, Angel and Oli Davies
taking control of the game. Superb kicking from Jayne Goodlife piled on
the points for Sharks.
Newcomers Kaiko and Jade also crossed the line.
Great game from the other newcomers Staci Cascani, Hannah Farnfield, Sam
McCarthy and Wendy Fry.
Second half the Sharks continued their good form. Although Sharks were
attacking well, they still need to work on their defensive line. Sharks asked
Coventry if they would like Sharks to kick off so the opposition team can have
the ball in hand for a spell but the response from the Bears was “No we have
to learn from this so let's play on". Play did continue and Sharks swam away
with it. Sharks will meet the bears in their next fixture up in Coventry on the
4th June.
Sharks Team: Oli Davies, Kate Clements, Jade Wong, Keiko Kato, Staci
Cascani, Chris Ovenden, Kim Davies, Sam McCarthy, Caroline Arthur (Capt),
Leslie Cripps, Sophie Anderson, Wendy Fry, Jayne Goodlife, Desiree Emery,
Whitney Howman, Hannah Farnfield, Amy Turner, Nicola Smith, Yvette
Burton, Rachel Gibson and Angel.

COMEBACK
SHARKS VS ST ALBANS
The Sharks started the game by far the better and came agonisingly
close to a score after just 5 minutes, on the last tackle Nathan Crichton
kicked forward and the chasing Damian Mohan collected the ball before
playing it to Tom Duffy. Duffy then kicked through and Mohan once again
chased but with the try line at his mercy he was unable to gain control of
the ball. Sharks didn't need to wait long for their opening score though,
Captain Rob McLean intercepted a pass and broke forward, after neat
passing from the Sharks, Ade Lewis cut in from his left wing position and
beat numerous Cents tackles to score on the right side. Duffy missed the
conversion from the right touch line. On 11 minutes it looked as if the
Sharks would notch their second try. Lewis intercepted a pass 15 yards
from the Sharks own try line and burst forward, a last ditch tackle
prevented him getting across the whitewash. The Sharks spread the ball
wide and Cents were penalised, however, a Sharks knock on ended the
promising move. A minute later and Cents had their first try, some neat
sidesteps from the Cents number 6 and he was over under the posts, He
added the conversion and Sharks trailed 6-4. Sharks responded quickly
and J.P. Byrnes scored his first try in two seasons in almost the exact
place Lewis had scored his. Duffy again failed to convert the tough kick
and Sharks led 8-6. Sharks could smell blood now and spent the next few
minutes camped in the Cents 20. As the Sharks piled on the pressure the
Cents kept giving away penalties, Adrian Miller was the Shark to take
advantage and he went over for his first Sharks try. Duffy put over the
extras to hand the Sharks an 8 point advantage. Unfortunately for the
Sharks, this seemed to wake Cents up from their slumber and the visitors
where dominant in the final 10 minutes of the half. On 30 minutes a
break by Cents saw them odds on to score but a superb last ditch tackle
by Chris Towells prevented the try.
Sharks where penalised for offside and survived a full Cents set on their
own goal line. It was though, to be a temporary reprieve as Cents scored
just two minutes later but failed to add the extra two points. On the stroke
of half time Cents scored another try far over on the left flank, an
impressive conversion from the touch line gave Cents a narrow two point
edge at the break. Cents started the second half the better and 10
minutes in, broke through the Sharks rearguard to score after the Sharks
had given away some soft penalties. Before Cents' attempt at adding the
extras the problems for the Sharks where compounded when Matt Clarke
was sent off for showing dissent to the official.
The Cents conversion meant they had a 22-14 lead. With 65 minutes on
the clock Sharks looked like they would cut the deficit, Mohan was sent
away down the left wing but as he lunged for the line he was tackled in to
touch. The numerical disadvantage was starting to tell for the Sharks and
the defence was beginning to tire. The Cents conversion meant they had
a 22-14 lead.
Two Cents tries in four minutes (72 and 75), both converted, broke the
Sharks brave resistance. On the final play of the game, Mohan finally
crossed the line for his well deserved try after some sustained Sharks
pressure. Duffy failed to add the extras but it mattered little as the Cents
wrapped up the win by a score of 34-18. Sharks are next in action on
Thursday evening when they travel to Hammersmith Hills Hoists.

After match drinks at the

inspired Towellsey to have a

HOISTS SECOND HALF
PERFORMANCE
PROVED TOO GOOD
FOR SHARKS Sharks up 6-4 at the half only to be denied by
Hammersmith in the second half.
Thursday evening after a down pour of Rain in the capital, Hammersmith
and Sharks kicked off their re-arranged catch up game hosted by
Hammersmith. This is now a local Derby with both home clubs only a
very long stone throw away from each other.
Hammersmith lost the toss and they kicked off the first half. Both teams
knew this was going to be an arm wrestle and an arm wrestle it was.
There were plenty of exchanges from both teams. From the sideline it
felt like there was no love lost between the two teams. Great defensive
work up front from Adrian Miller, Rowan Tonkin, Wayne Broomfield led by
Nick Davy. Sharks worked hard in the first 15 minutes in defence only to
have their line penetrated by a back’s move which put their centre in for
the first try of the game. The Arm wrestle continued for another 15
minutes with Sharks having the ball in hand for most of that time. Sharks
completed sets and got a good kick and chase going but Hoists were
defending well until the 32nd minute. Tom Duffy put a high Bomb on the
right side which was collected by Second Rower John Paul Byrnes for
the equalizer. Tom Duffy converted and sharks were up 6 – 4 going into
the half. A couple of times Sharks looked dangerous on the right hand
side with Ben Sunderland breaking the line and also Terrence Puna
using the kick and chase from a Sharks scrum which nearly paid off.
In the Second Half Sharks were feeling confident. Sharks kicked off, only
to be shocked by Hoists who scored two minutes in with Hoist’s half back
scooting through the Sharks defence to put their centre in for his second
try. Score line 10-6 to Hoists. Unfortunately it did not get any better from
there as Hammersmith received the ball back from the restart and scored
again after two minutes from the previous try. Sharks where now starting
to look a little tired and un-organized the first half. Score line 16-6 to
Hoists. Half way through the second half Sharks where putting up a fight.
New comers Liam Dunsheath and Sean Cookson where substituted into
the game on the wings with Dan Baker moving into the Pack and
Ade Lewis moving from the wing to Fullback. By now Sharks were
complacent and were not doing the basic things right. I guess it’s hard to do
when you’re on the back foot for most of the second half. It seemed a total u-
turn from their performance in the first half. Hoists did not stop and they ran
through another two tries with their half back leading the way. Final score
was 32-6 to Hoists. All I can say is that Sharks had a chance to stay in the
arm wrestle but let it slip away in the second half. I think we were missing
another half back and also a bit of mongrel. Sharks played as well as we
could have but there is certainly room for improvement and I think Sharks
knew that. Coach Mark Barnes' words to the team were “we have a chance
of doing well again this year but we need to get numbers to training to ensure
every single player knows the plays and also train as a team”.
