This laser printer is a class 1 laser product that complies with 21CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 of theCDRH standard and IEC825. This means that this machine does not produce hazardous laserradiation. The use of controls, adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specifiedherein may result in hazardous radiation exposure. This laser radiation is not a danger to the skin, but when an exact focusing of the laser beam isachieved on the eyes retina, there is the danger of spot damage to the retina. The following cautions must be observed to avoid exposure of the laser beam to your eyes at the timeof servicing.

    1) When a problem in the laser optical unit has occurred, the whole optical unit must be exchangedas a unit, not as individual parts.2) Do not look into the machine with the main switch turned on after removing the developer unit,

toner cartridge, and drum cartridge.3) Do not look into the laser beam exposure slit of the laser optical unit with the connector connected

    [5] INSTALLATION

    1. Installation (use) environment checkBe sure to check the following installation (use) environment checkbefore installing the machine. If the installation (use) environment conditions are not satisfied asshown below, the machine may not display its performance fully, causing troubles and safety problems. If the installation (use) condi-tions are not satisfied, be sure to arrange the conditions before in-stalling the machine.

No. Contents1 Installing space2 Power source (capacity, fluctuation, safety)3 Base strength4 Direct sunlight, dust, temperature, humidity, gases, chemicals

    (1) Installing spaceAllow the following space around the machine for proper operationsand machine performances. Also consider the space for options.Allow enough space at the back of the machine. If this space is notsufficient, heat radiation or dust prevention is not performed properly, causing poor performances and troubles.

    (2) Power source(capacity, voltage, frequency, safety, plug)

If the power source conditions are not satisfied, the machine perfor-mances cannot be displayed and safety problems may occur.1) Capacity of power source

Check that the following power capacity is satisfied. If not, add thepower source.Power capacity: 15A or more (100V series)Power capacity: 7A or more (200V series)

    2) Power voltageMeasure the voltage during copying to check that it is the ratedvoltage +- 10 %.If the above condition is not satisfied, use thicker wire to reducethe impedance. There is another way to use a step-up transformer, the capacity ofwhich should be more than the max. power consumption of themachine.

    3) Power frequency, waveformThe frequency fluctuation should be within +-2% of the specifiedfrequency. If the waveform is distorted, troubles may be caused.

    4) SafetyBe sure to ground the machine.

    5) Power plugCheck the power plug shape, and do not use unmatched-shapeone.

    (3) Base strength and horizontal levelThis condition contributes to the safety. Be sure to use a base ofsufficient strength. If the machine is not levelled, the toner density control is not peformed properly, affecting the print quality adversely.

    (4) Avoid the locations of extremely high or lowtemperature, or high or low humidity (i.e., neara heater, air conditioner, humidifier).

    1) Temperature, humidityThe paper contained inside will absorb moisture and condensatiowill form inside the printer. This will result in paper jams and poprint quality.Operation environment temperature and humidity

    15 27C (20 70%)

    2) DustIf dust enters the machine, dirty copy, paper jam, of shortened lifmay be caused.

    3) Direct sunlightIf the machine is subject to direct sunlight, the external cabinemay be discolored and copy quality may be degraded.

    4) Gases and chemicalsAvoid installation near gases and chemicals. Especially be carefulof a diazo copier, which may generate ammonia gas. Installationnear gases may adversely affect print quality, causing troubles.

    5) VibrationAvoid installation near a machine which generates vibrations. If vibrations are exerted to the printer, the print images aredeflected and troubles may be caused.

    2. Printer HandlingIn order to maintain the printers high performance, always adhere tothe following handling procedures.

    (1) Do not allow the printer to fall over, be

subjected to shocks, or be hit by foreignobjects.

    (2) Do not subject the drum cartridge to light. If subjected to excessive light, the photoconductive surface of thedrum (green surface) will be damaged, resulting in poor print quality.

    (3) Always store spare toner cartridges, developerunits, or drum cartridges, in a dark locationwithout removing them from the boxes theycame in.

    3. Unpacking1) Cut the packing straps and tape that hold the top portion of th

box onto the printer package and lift off the top portion.

    2) Lift off the top Styrofoam packing to expose the printer. Then wtwo people holding the printer at its bottom, carefully lift up tprinter and carry it to the location where it is to be installed.

WARNING: When carrying the printer, always have at least twopeople lift the printer. The printer weighs approximate

42 kg (93 pounds) with all components installed. Atempting to lift it alone can lead to injury.

    3) After removing any remaining protective tape, proceed to the nesection.

    5. Installing Options

    (1) Installation of the Secondary Feeder

    1) Remove the secondary feeder from its box. Remove any protec-tive tape and packaging materials.Verify that all the parts in the following packing list are present.

    2) Place the secondary feeder on a sturdy, flat table.3) Turn off the printer and remove all cables from the back of th

printer including the power cable and computer interface cable.4) Have two people lift the printer by holding it at its bottom and

the printer on top of the secondary feeder so that the two positioning pins fit into their holes that are located on the bottom of thprinter.

WARNING: The printer weighs 42 kg (93 pounds). Be careful whenlifting the printer. It is very heavy and requires twpeople to carry. Do not attempt to carry it by yourself oallow anyone else to do so.

    5) Connect the connection cable from the back of the secondaryfeeder to the secondary feeder power connector on the back ofthe printer.

    6) Remove the universal cassette from the secondary feeder andload the paper.

    7) Reconnect the power and interface cables and turn on the printerAfter the printer warms up, the control panel will displayPCLLE/A4 (the on-line display will differ depending on the curreemulation setting and size of paper installed). This completes thinstallation.

Before beginning operations, turn off the printer, un-plug the power cord, and disconnect any interfacecables.

Do not touch any surfaces that are likely to generatestatic electricity (monitor screen, etc.).

Be careful not to drop the controller board, memoryboards, or optional PostScript, flash memory, or in-terface boards or subject them to any shocks.

Do not set any components on a carpet or other areawhich is likely to have a lot of static electricity.

    A. Removing the Controller Board1) Turn off the printer and remove all cables from the back of the

printer including the power cable and computer interface cable.2) Locate the two retaining screws that attach the controller board at

the back of the printer and turn the screws in the direction of thearrows shown.

    3) Carefully slide out the controller board and set it down on a clean, flat table.

    B. Installation of Memory (SIMM)1) Remove the controller board from the printer.2) Remove the new SIMM from its packaging.3) Install the SIMM by inserting it diagonally, with the chips fac

downward, into its slot until its bottom is seated and then rotatinit upright until it clicks into place.

NOTE: To remove a SIMM, first bend the small clips holding eacedge to allow the SIMM to fall down to a diagonal positioThen pull it out and store it in the anti-static bag that it cam

    in for future use.

    C. Installation of the PostScript and Flash MemoryBoards

    1) Remove the controller board from the printer.2) Remove the board from its packaging.3) Install the board by firmly, but gently, pressing the board into

    connector on the controller board.

NOTE: To remove the PostScript or flash memory board, simply puit out. Then store it in the anti-static bag that it came in fofuture use.

    D. Installation of the LocalTalk/RS-232C Serial Interfaceor Ethernet Interface Board
