A Word From Your Agent...

2017 Shawnee County Fair: Pirates of the Fairibbean

With the county fair just weeks away here are few tips to help you have a great fair experience:

Keep cool and have fun! Fair can be a stressful time for everyone. Try and remember the reason for exhibiting at the County Fair. We want to support the knowledge gained by our youth in their project that year. No matter the color of the ribbon received we want to celebrate how much they have learned!

Know when exhibit check-in and judging times are. Times and places do

change from year to year so double check the fair book schedule!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you have a question about an exhibit ask your division superintendent or the Extension Staff. On Thursday and Friday there will always be someone at the information table in Expo Hall to help you.

When in doubt, read your fair book. The county fair book is a great place to

start when you need to know division rules or what materials you need to bring for your exhibit. Call the Extension Office if you cannot find the answer to your questions.

If you have any suggestions for improvement please leave a comment in the

comment box at the info table. We are always trying to improve the fair! The Fair is a great time to enter your state fair entries! There will be forms at

the info table in Expo Hall. State Fair entries are due July 31st for everything except livestock and horse.

Please make sure you or someone you know is picking up your fair entries on

Sunday July 23rd at 4:00 p.m. or immediately following the Fashion Revue. All exhibits including animals need to be removed from the fair at 4:00pm. If you pick up exhibits for another youth, please communicate with that family you are doing that before you leave the fair. No exhibits can be picked up before the conclusion of the Fashion Revue.

Thank you in advance to all the volunteers that help make the Shawnee County

Fair possible. We look forward to seeing you at the fair July 15-16th for the

Horse Show and July 20th -23rd!

MANHATTAN, Kan.— Area 4-H youth were named as Kansas 4-H State Project and State 4-H Scholarship winners at the annual Emerald Circle Banquet on May 31, 2017. A total of 32 State 4-H Project winners were chosen along with 69 current and past Kansas 4-H members to receive scholarships equaling $75,000.

State 4-H Project winners are recognized for their citizenship, leadership, learning and participation within a specific 4-H project area and also earn the opportunity to attend National 4-H Congress, which is in Atlanta, Georgia each fall. Additionally, they each received a $450 scholarship for the trip.

“Celebrating together the leadership impact and investment 4-H youth have demonstrated within their communities for their communities through project-based learning is a highlight of the Kansas 4-H Youth Development year. As we recognize and celebrate individual 4-H youth achievements, Emerald Circle is a time to remind us of the 4-H mission and purpose of 4-H youth development, which is to empower tomorrow’s community leaders by engaging them in community leadership today,” Wade M. Weber, State 4-H Program Leader said.

Scholarships are awarded based on involvement, leadership and citizenship as a member of Kansas 4-H. The scholarships were provided by generous donors through the Kansas 4-H Foundation.

“The scholarship recipients have shown dedication and passion toward the Kansas 4-H program of the highest level. We look forward to their continued service to 4-H as engaged alumni and are honored to be awarding scholarships to such deserving individuals,” Jake Worcester, President/CEO, Kansas 4-H Foundation said.

Shawnee County had two project area

winners.

Robert Schulz, Riverside 4-H Club, Geology Project Winner

Claire Coultis, Shunga Valley 4-H Club, Reading Project Winner

Shawnee County had one scholarship winner.

Indian Creek

Eight members of Indian Creek 4-H club visited

Thornton Place Senior Independent Living

Center on May 26. They played music and gave

project talks and demonstrations to

approximately 35 residents and friends. Projects

and demonstrations included arts and crafts,

rocketry, photography, electric, robotic, bunny,

bucket calf, and a talk about the baking classes.

The audience enjoyed petting Lego, the bunny, and even asked to take photos. Lego posed beautifully. Two

brothers collaborated for an innovative way of demonstrating how to prepare and show a bucket calf, with one

giving the demonstration and the other pretending to be the not-always-docile calf - they were a huge hit! The

audience enjoyed the whole show and there were comments about looking forward to next year's

presentation.

Shawnee Riders

The Shawnee Riders are excited to be able to have the opportunity to make signs for the Shawnee County Fair Pan-cake feed. We are hoping to lead the public to Landon Are-na. These talented kids pictured from left to right are Sophia Tay-lor (guest), Haley Tillery, Calista Covel, Brighton Covel, Melita Covel, Sam Shonka and Elaine LaRoche. See you all at the pancake feed, just follow the signs :)!
