Our Approach to Heritage

Shaylor’s sensitive approach to heritage and conservation works, with the support of our specialist supply chain, ensures we restore buildings to their former excellence, transforming the built environment.

We believe we are unique in the regional conservation sector as a main contractor. We have the ability to perform on large (over £1 million) schemes, whether historically significant, listed status or mixed heritage large construction projects, combining new build or extended refurbishment elements. We have the skills and capability to deliver such schemes successfully and to assured quality levels.

Our approach to delivering heritage projects lies in our detailed understanding of this sector and our collaborative approach to liaising with designers and local planning authorities. Our expertise is this sector was recognised in the WMCCE Celebrating Construction Awards where we were finalists in the Heritage category.

Richard Sapcote, Shaylor Heritage Specialist, is well known to the Midlands heritage marketplace, having considerable experience in working on some of the regions most important buildings, including Back to Backs for The National Trust and St Martin’s Church Bull Ring in Birmingham.

Richard will lead the development of a dedicated team at Shaylor Group, overseeing the operational activities and his involvement will ensure clients and consultants have certainty in the technical support, involvement of known supply chain and application of quality craftsmanship expected in this sector.

SAINT GILES CHURCHSTONEWORK REPAIRS

ST THOMAS AND ST LUKE CHURCHSPIRE REPAIRS

Project Description

St Giles Church in Sheldon, Birmingham has occupied the site since 1294 and is one of only 3 churches built in the middle ages in the Birmingham area.

To undertake the repair works we erected full scaffolding to the tower including an ‘overroof’. An electric hoist was used to distribute the materials safely onto the tower without damaging the original stone work.

The works consisted of:

• Removing the existing castellated stone forming a

parapet, taking to ground level and rebuilding using the existing and new carved stone.

• Removing 4 weathered gargoyles and replacing them with 4 newly carved stone gargoyles carved from individual stones weighing approximately 1 tonne each. As the carving on the existing gargoyles had weathered beyond any real recognition we produced clay maquettes so that we could agree the design with the project Architect.

Project Description

We were asked to undertake the complete restoration of the church spire in Hollington sandstone. This involved us having to erect design scaffolding to encapsulate the spire and tower.

A survey was undertaken with the Architect to agree areas of repair or replacement. We arranged bankering of stone, which was undertaken on site to ensure the size and shape matched the existing raked angle of spire.

We also carried out the general re-pointing and refurbishment and re-guilding of the spire crest, new installation of lightning conductor and arranging cleaning of all stonework by hand.

Works also included repair and service of clock mechanism and clock face.

HORNBY COTTAGE,SHAKESPEARES BIRTHPLACE

NORBURY MANOR PARK MOAT

Project Description

Hornby Cottage is a listed building which underwent external re-roofing (two new roofs and patch repair) alongside conservation remedial works. Internal structural alterations were undertaken along with an internal refurbishment and associated M&E works. The works were carried out in 3 phases.

External works: To the south elevation, timber repairs were made to imitation oak panels. 150 year old leaded glass panes were removed from the rear windows and brickwork repaired and replaced.

Internal works: All load bearing walls were removed opening up the gift shop to make it three times bigger than its existing size. New toilets were re-configured at the far end of the building.

Project Description

The moat was drained using a heavy duty pump prior to commencement of works. Following site preparation, a working scaffold platform was erected just above the water level to all four sides of the island.

The subsequent works included the following types of repair:

• Lifting and rebedding outer-face stones

• Reinstatement of outer-face stones, salvaged from moat

• Repointing of ashlar outer-skin masonry

• Repointing of exposed rubble-core stonework

• Reforming rubble core capping, to improve weathering

• Grouting and tiling between stone skins

• Scheduled Ancient Monument and on English Heritage At Risk Register

• Also significant involvement and funding from Nature England and English Heritage

BEDFORD MAGISTRATES COURT

DIGBETH POLICESTATION - GRADE II LISTED BUILDING

Project Description

The project scope covered remedial works to the roof including slating ridge tiles and glazing works.

Erection of the scaffolding proved a challenge in itself as it had to be designed and then erected cantilever over the river.

Scaffolding was erected inside court rooms and had to be carried through the entrance/foyer with as little disruption as possible.

The team operated on restricted working hours so as not to disrupt normal court proceedings. This involved mainly working early am and late pm shifts and all through the weekend.

The team worked with Westmorland slate. Sourcing large and correct sizes was a challenge in itself.

Works included installing lightning protection pigeon nets and wire system.

Project Description

Due to the leaking roof structure, the initial works involved the erection of a new scaffolding enclosure including temporary roof. This required full design and was restricted by the location of the police station on the corner of a busy traffic junction.

Existing timber rotten trusses were removed and replaced with new steel trusses craned into position. The temporary scaffold was constructed to allow sections to be pulled back and allow trusses to be placed into position.

Shaylor refixed reclaimed slates and replaced all leadworks. Also repairs to brickwork, rebuilding chimneys and open joints to stone work and brickwork and cleaning down of low level stonework.

Associated internal repairs to ceilings and finishes, together with window repairs.

THE EDGBASTON, 18 HIGHFIELD ROAD

Project Description

The works comprised of a full strip out and refurbishment of a Grade II listed office building within Calthorpe Estate and transform into a high end Boutique Hotel.

Internal removal of all fixtures and fitting, but retaining the historic features such as plaster cornices, stair balustrades and windows.

Complete installation of new M&E services with high quality bathroom fittings, acoustic and fire insulation works, air conditioning throughout, new kitchens and full IT/media functionality for all bedrooms.

Externally; repairs to the main roof, some leadwork reinstatement, render repairs and redecorations throughout. New car park and landscaping including formation of new patio and introduction of specimen plants.

PRIVATE SECTOR CASE STUDIES

Project Description

This listed Georgian building on Calthorpe Estate has undergone a complete refurbishment with a new build two storey extension to the rear of the building.

The whole building was fully refurbished with specialist rendering work a necessity. Internal works were carried out in accordance with the planning and conservation requirements, which incorporated traditional lime and horsehair plaster works and specialist paints in accordance with heritage listing requirements.

Part of the existing roof was removed and new structural steel works were installed to create an open plan environment. All existing 180 year old timber floors have been repaired, renovated and reinforced to comply with new office floor regulations.

OASIS ACADEMYHANDSWORTH BIRMINGHAM

KING EDWARD VI GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Project Description

The school recently achieved Academy status and required external elevations to be fully refurbished. The first phase of work were to the North and East Elevations.

Due to spalling bricks, most lower sections of the external face of brickwork were carefully taken down and rebuilt.

During removal of external brickwork, we found a time capsule from 1883. This was formally presented to the school and opened for the pupils to admire and understand the past.

Works consisted of:

• Selected roof repairs, flat roof reinstatement, replacement of flashings and features to provide long term solutions.

• Removal and replacement of all windows with matching upvc opening casement windows to suit existing appearance and bespoke sizing.

• Internal making good to external works.

RBS CARDIFF FAÇADE REBUILDING

RBS BRISTOLFAIENCE FAÇADE REPAIRS

Project Description

Fully access scaffold was provided and investigations took place. It was established that the steel beam and connectors were heavily corroded and were pulling the stonework apart.

After submitting a full brief and outline cost, the repair works commenced.

Areas of stonework were removed and the steelwork cut out and replaced in stainless steel including curved sections and designed connectors for the stone facing.

New matching stone work was provided together with full internal repairs, including asbestos removal. Also an area of flat roof was recovered and new flashing installed.

COMMERCIAL SECTOR CASE STUDIES

Project Description

The Edward Everard Building is one of the most unique and interesting buildings in Bristol. Built in 1902 by the printer Edward Everard, the glazed tile façade was in the Art Nouveau style to artistically depict the story of printing.

Scaffolding was erected to allow a full survey and provide protection to allow access to the building. It was established the substructure was indeed delaminating.

The façade was full surveyed and all tiles numbered, then all were carefully removed and set aside in an off site store. The backing render was taken off and replaced. Then all tiles faithfully refitted to match the original scheme.

A number of the tiles were replaced, these were individually manufactured by Tiles of Stow Ltd based in Birmingham.

REDHOUSE GLASSWORKSVISITORS CENTRE

Project Description

Redhouse Cone, built in 1790, is arguably the best preserved, of its kind in the world. Works fell into three distinct features:

• Full internal and external scaffold was designed and constructed so that the transfer of load could be passed through the structure and ultimately to ground. Further, it provided access for the rake out, re-pointing and replacement of spalled bricks.

• Ancillary Buildings & Workshops - Refurbishment of all other buildings adjacent to The Cone included: Dry/wet rot treatment, traditional roof timber, renewal re-roofing in new tiles and salvage from site, full mechanical and electrical services and construction works.

• New Build - Steel aluminium and fully structurally glazed reception/visitor centre to complement the existing building.

MUSEUMS CASE STUDIES

Project Description

The project was the conversion of the existing Grade II listed 19th-century Stour Vale Mill into an interactive museum environment dedicated to the carpet industry.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant enabled the following works to be carried out; full internal refurbishment of ground and first floors, new & lettable office space, display and storage areas and new mezzanine floor and gallery display facility.

Demolition works were carried out within the old factory building including asbestos removal, ground works and excavation. Steel erection and general block work was part of the initial works forming large openings to create open plan areas for the gallery. A switch room store and workshop were also formed.
