This season continues a pe-riod of transition at the Club. As you will notice, we have upgraded the tennis courts in most need of attention, in-stalled a new fence and re-habbed the clubhouse roof. If all goes well, in the very near future, you will be see-

Our objective is to restore the facility’s luster. While some of our patina remains, we are in need of some overhauling. Most of this work will take place in the off season so we do not disrupt the season. Some of it we have already accomplished: the new perimeter fencing and the new roof (with a state of the art rubber membrane) over the portico of the clubhouse.

Rawley Gilmore (our facility di-rector) has put some Herculean efforts into battling the elements and restoring some of our ca-bana facades that have been destroyed. He has also been instrumental in the short term rehab of our shower rooms.

We are preparing for another great season at SHBR! We are in Division 3 this year and will be swimming our A meets with Lee Graham, McLean, High-

lands Swim, South Run and Sully Sta-tion. We have B meets and a Practice Meet scheduled with SHRA, Lee Gra-ham, Dowden Terrace, Dominion Hills and Forest Hollow.

Please join us at the pool on Memorial Day (Monday, 5/28) for an ice cream social from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. This will be an opportunity to meet and socialize with the coaches, register for the 2007

swim season, pick up important informa-tion about the summer and volunteer. We need timers, officials, and lots of other volunteers to help run the swim meets and swim team. The social is for both returning and new swimmers – and their parents! At 5:00 p.m., we will have a meeting for all new families to answer questions about the team. If you cannot make it on Monday, there will be addi-tional registrations that first week. Please

look for the signs posted on the Swim Team Bulle-tin Board during Memorial Day weekend for times. Every swimmer must

register and we must have a current Emergency Care form on file. Registra-tion packets for returning swimmers will be at the pool in the lobby.

We have the same swimsuit this year. The Aardvark sales representative will be available on Tuesday (5/29) from 4:30 to 6:00 for suit fittings. You can also order a suit at any other registration. We will have a sizing kit. The Aardvark represen-tative will accept cash, check or credit card for suit purchases. Suit orders at any other time will require credit card or a check. As always, we will accept cash or check for T-Shirt or cap purchases.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me (703-538-4393) or one of our other team reps — Lauren Bugel (703-533-8534) or Gail Solomon (703-536-4486). We look forward to seeing you soon.

Mark your calendars for Friday, June 29 (6-8:00) for our “Hoorah School’s Out” party for grade school kids, including a DJ, dance contests, games, prizes and ice cream cones.

July 8 from 3-5:00 is our traditional Fam-ily Fun Day with relays, games, crafts – designed especially for our youngest members.

Adult members and friends are welcome on July 21st (7-10) for what has tradition-ally been a” lively” dinner party. Watch for

We are looking forward to a wonderful 2007 season, but since it’s been a long winter, it’s time to review our guest poli-cies. Admission for guests ages two years and older is one ticket on weekdays and two tickets on weekends and holidays. Alternatively, members may pay a cash equivalent equal to double the ticket value required for admission. Guest books are $20 but are on sale for $15 for the first few weeks of the season. Please respect the SHBR admission policy and encourage your guests to follow all the pool rules.

If you are interested in reserving one of our two gazebos, please contact Helen Hershner at [email protected]

to make arrangements. Gazebo rental requires a $25 deposit ($125 for groups of 40 or more) which will be used for cleaning if required. A larger deposit may be requested for parties over fifty people.

For keys to the tennis courts, again con-tact Helen at the above email address. Tennis keys are available to members only for a $15 fee.

SHBR Goes Green By Jordan Gilmore

My name is Jordan Gilmore, I will be a Senior at Stuart High School, and I’m a lifeguard and a member at SHBR. This summer I am implementing a recycling program at the pool. I am very interested in helping the environment and I realized that the pool would be a great place to start. Recycling is very important as recy-cling one aluminum can saves 95% of the energy used to make the can from scratch. Burning plastic in an incinerator takes twice as much energy than recycling plas-tic does. I have really high hopes for this program but I will need your help. Recy-cling bins will be placed around the facility and we ask that you please use them for your plastic bot-tles and aluminum cans. Thank you for helping us help the environment!

Remember, if you play tennis once a week, you should have your racquet restrung once a year; twice a week, twice a year, etc. Stop by the Pro Shop or call Teresa Lemair at 703-560-9205 to set up an appointment.

Munchkin Tennis Camps are held weekly on Tuesday and Thursday 6-7 PM. Play-ers will learn the basic steps to strokes, work on hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills, and have lots and lots of fun! Group sizes are kept very small, usually 4-5 players on a court.

Junior camps are three one-week ses-sions and four two-week sessions begin-ning June 11 and ending August 24. Classes run three hours a day (with a twenty minute break), on Monday through Friday. “Additional” one-week sessions (within scheduled two-week sessions) may be purchased, but only on a space available basis.

TENNIS PLAYERS!!!! Come one and come all to the second annual tennis planting/gardening beautification event. To be held Sunday May 20th at 11:00 a.m. We hope to add plants to the area along the walkway to improve the look of the tennis court entrance. Please bring a hardy plant, perennial that does not require tons of sunlight. Feel free to bring gardening tools you might need. Rawley did a great job last year with the walkway, let’s keep it looking good. See ya there.

The SHRB Seals Dive Team will compete this season in Division III. Following a very successful 2006 season in Division V, the NVSL seeding committee decided to move the team up two divi-sions. How’s that for a vote of confidence!! For the first year in many, this will result in competing with our neighbor across the park-ing lot, Sleepy Hollow Rec-reation Association. Other Division III teams include Dunn Loring, Highland Swim, Mansion House and Mantua.

The Seals are well prepared heading into this new chal-lenge: we look forward to welcoming many returning divers, Head Coach Anita O’Quinn, and Assistant Coach Lisa Scerbo. But like all strong teams, we also need new recruits. Our team prides itself on the strength of its young diver program - if you can swim to the ladder, Coach Anita can teach you to dive! If you don’t think you are young anymore, she can still teach you to dive . . . especially boys between 11-18. While we have standout divers in the older age groups,

we lack team depth. There is always room and appreciation for those willing to step up to the challenge. All you need is a will-ingness to learn and to try new skills.

We will kick off the season on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th, at the pool where the Dive Representatives and the Dive Coaching staff will be available to answer questions from 3:30 - 5 p.m. You can register your diver for the team at that

time. Letty Grishaw and Kate Walter are the Dive Reps. They can be reached at [email protected] and [email protected]. Dive practice will begin

Tuesday, May 29th from 3:30-5 p.m. and will continue each weekday afternoon at that time until Fairfax County Schools close for the summer, at which time we will move to expanded practice hours.

The “A” Dive meets are Tues-day evenings at 6 p.m. and the competitive season will begin on June 26th and then continue the first four Tues-day evenings in July and cul-minate with the Divisional Dive Meet on July 29th fol-lowed by the All-Star Dive Meet on August 5th. We will also participate in several spe-cial dive meets such as the Wally Martin Meet (3 meter board) and the Crackerjack Meet (for those divers not diving in Divisionals). We will

plan several “B” meets for the less ex-perienced divers as well. Those typically are scheduled on several Thursday eve-nings in July.

for the club, to include the scheduling of projected periodic resurfacings of the tennis courts, whitecoats/coping/tile re-placement work on our pools (we have three), review of the upper pool pump room structure and integrity, parking lot repair, and certainly not last and not least, the cabana and bathroom rehab.

Please bear with us as we make our facil-ity into the best it can be. As we are able to accomplish these goals we will strive to keep the SHBR community updated.

Rawley Gilmore has been busy all the winter/spring keeping the club standing despite mother nature’s best efforts to take us down. Plans for new cabanas are being finalized and will begin construc-tion after this pool season.

A new wood fence has been built around the front and side to replace the rotted matchsticks that existed. The shower room has been patched up to get us through this season before its de-struction when new cabanas are built. The roof of the clubhouse is being re-

done after multiple patch jobs failed keep back the tide.

Yes, our facility is weathered and show-ing the effects of age, but we are work-ing on the next phase of construction that will see us through the foreseeable future. We want to get it right so it will serve us for many, many years.

For now, the grounds look great, the pools are being readied, and we are look-ing forward to another successful fun-filled summer.

lap lanes. You can check it to see if there are pool closings due to inclement weather or mechanical problems. You can even send your questions to the SHBR Board of Directors from there ([email protected]).

In addition, you can lookup all of the pool regulations. For example, did you know that adult children of members who no longer live at home with their parents, but reside locally are not allowed to use the club without purchasing or leasing their own membership or paying a daily guest fee?

Finally, if you read Steve’s and Renee’s articles you would find out many of the wonderful things we are doing to refur-bish and upgrade the club’s aging facili-ties. You may have already seen the new fence and the resurfaced tennis courts. Next fall we will commence the refurbish-ing of the cabanas. As you can well imagine, all of this takes money. Which

For those of you who have-n’t been paying attention, it’s 2007 and a lot of things

have changed. For example, we now have computers and this thing called the Internet that is really quite amazing! You can actually find out just about everything you would want to know (and quite a bit more that you probably don’t want to know) on it. You can buy or sell anything; make travel and restau-rant reservations; check the news and weather anywhere in the world.

But, arguably the greatest break-through on the Internet has been the introduction of (drum roll please…) www.shbr.org; where you can learn everything there is to know about our beloved club. You can find out when and where the swim, dive and social events are. There’s even a link to Dave LeMair’s tennis site. You can see if there’s an event that might affect the

brings me to another great thing about the Internet— we can use it to cut costs. For example, printing and mailing of this newsletter (and all other newsletters) typically costs the club over $2,000 per year. We can save virtually all of that by making the newsletter available electroni-cally, and posting it on the SHBR web site where you can download it, view it and even print it if you like. So, if you haven’t already done so; please give us your email address so we can send you com-munications electronically.

We were so impressed with this Internet thing that we presently have an explora-tory team investigating the pros and cons of making the club an entirely virtual experience. So, enjoy it this summer, as it may be the last time you can actually get wet in the pool.
