Trader Joe’s will open their 180th - and newest - “fresh format” grocery store in Calabasas on Friday, October 5 at 8 am. The store will be located in the Courtyard at the Commons in the old Babies “R” Us space at 23741 Calabasas Road. The chain does have locations in Woodland Hills, West Hills and Agoura. They are known for packaging innovative, hard-to-find foods under the “Trader Joe’s” name. A brief “lei-cutting” ceremony will precede the official opening, which will have live music, food tastings, giveaways and more. The new store “captain” is Phil Gotto, a 25-year veteran of the company.

The Los Angeles County Coroner has reported that the Woodland Hills postal worker who was found dead in her truck this summer died of hyperthermia or heatstroke. Peggy Frank was found unresponsive in her postal truck, which was not equipped with air conditioning, on July 6 during a heatwave where temperatures reached 117 degrees. OSHA is investigating her death and may or may not issue a citation of violation. On the OSHA website they did cite two violations by USPS for two heat exhaustion cases and two heat-related deaths from 2012 to 2016.

For the first time, the City of Calabasas is offering discounted, pre-purchased tickets for the upcoming Pumpkin Festival. The annual festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21 from 10 am to 5 pm at Juan Bautista de Anza Park, 3701 Lost Hills Road. Tickets purchased before October 15 will be $5 per person; tickets purchased after that date and at the gate will be $10 per person (seniors and veterans/military with ID always $5, those under two free). Saturday there is free admission before 11 am for children six and under in costume. Tickets can be purchased at the DeAnza Park office from 9 am to 9 pm, at Calabasas City Hall 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, the Calabasas Chamber, 23945 Calabasas Road, Suite 216 from 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center, 234009 Park Sorrento from 9 am to 6 pm daily. The burning questions on the minds of Calabasas residents can be answered at a community forum for City Council candidates on Tuesday, October 2.

Incumbents on the November 6 ballot, James Bozajian, Mary Sue Maurer and David Shapiro, will appear on the forum dais to answer questions about city government, development, poli-tics, crime and more.

The public is invited to the forum, which will be held at 7 pm at Founders Hall, 200 Civic Center Drive. The forum will be moderated by Kathleen Sterling, Valley News Group publisher. Questions may also be submitted online at cityofcalabasas.com, Election 2018 Forum Questions.

The November 6 ballot for the three open City Council seats actually has four names on it. Calabasas resident and attorney Vahid Naziri filed to run for city council and then withdrew his name, but after the August 10 deadline to remove himself from the ballot.

“I wish I would have known

(about the deadline). It was just the circumstances that came after the fact. Had I known and knew there were three seats, three incumbents and myself, I would have withdrawn immediately.”

Naziri confirmed to Valley News Group that he is not campaigning, not running for office, and not participating in the October 2 forum.

He recently told a local newspaper that he withdrew because “I don’t know the issues as well as

the other candidates do.” He also said he has his eye on 2020 but is now seeking to be appointed to a city commission to gain “better understanding of the issues facing the community.”

The November election thus has the three incumbents running for three open seats. If Naziri had pulled his name from the list before August 10, there would be no need for the election, which has been said could cost the city up to $100,000.

All three incumbents have served multiple terms of office.

Bozajian, an attorney, was first elected to City Council in 1997, and served as Mayor five times from 1998-99, 2003-04, 2007-08, 2011-12 and 2015-16. He is the recipient of the Calabasas Chamber’s “Spirit of Calabasas Award” and the Calabasas Historical Society’s “Living History Award.”

Maurer was first elected to the Calabasas City Council in 2005 and was re-elected to subsequent four year terms in 2009 and 2013. She has served as Mayor three times and is the head of the California Conservation Corp’s Camarillo Center.

Shapiro, also an attorney, was first elected to the City Council in 2013 and served as Mayor from 2014-15. He is currently Mayor Pro Tem and was appointed to the state League of California Cities Policy Committee and SCAG (Southern California Association of Governments). He received the “Golden C” from Calabasas High School for exemplary service to the school.

One of the oldest living original Tuskegee Airmen from World War II, Lt Col. Robert Friend, aged 98, was honored recently by the Association of Naval Aviation. Friend had wanted to enlist in the Army during the war to fly for the United States, but was turned away as black Americans could not join the Armed Forces to serve as pilots. While a student he joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program in 1939, and when the program opened an opportunity for a segregated pilot training program at Tuskegee, Friend had his chance to join the war efforts and earn his wings. During World War II he flew a P-51D Mustang, painted up with his original “Bunny” bathing beauty. The aircraft was on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum for a number of years, but was actually overhauled to make it airworthy again and it took flight in Feburary 2015. Frind is now a member of the CAF Red Tail Squadron, a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to educating audiences about the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen. Fernando Foundation Announces New “Impact Awards” The Fernando Foundation,

which every year bestows the prestigious Fernando Award, the valley’s highest award for volunteerism, this year has added a new award category to its repertoire.

The Impact Awards recognize outstanding individuals, teams of individuals, or local businesses who engender positive change through locally driven community initiatives.

This year three individuals will receive the Impact Award in recognition of their initiatives. They are Gwyn Petrik, Don Larsen and Sister Carmel Somers.

Gwyn Petrick, a State Farm agent, has made a big impact on the community through her work with Rotary.

A member of the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills since 2006, she has been Community Service Chair and is currently the chair of RotaCare GLA, a free health clinic in Canoga Park.

Petrick also serves as President of Soroptimist International of the San Fernando Valley, which hosted the first anti-trafficking forum in Woodland Hills. She is a board member of the Valley Cultural Center and is a past board member of the Valley Women’s Center and the West Valley Warner Center Chamber of Commerce.

Don Larsen is President and CEO of the Northridge Beautification Foundation. He is dedicated to advancing volunteerism, public health and safety, art and culture.

A fourth-generation Northridger, his Das Bauhaus apartment building is an art community and the backbone of the Reseda Boulevard Great Streets Corridror.

He led the Panda Los Angeles Zoo Project, founded the “Clean Streets Clean Starts” intiative and leads work parties numbering into the thousands. He maintains Reseda Boulevaard’s

painted sidewalks, furniture and steel trash cans. Through the Northridge Beautification Foundation he presents an annual scholarship to an outstanding student in the CSUN Urban Studies Graduate Program.

Teacher and community organizer Sister Carmel Somers is recognized for her work with the Valley Family Center, first as a volunteer and then as a staff member. When she joined the center, a large number of students were failing in school and she started an after-school tutorial program. Many of the students she reached are now leaders in their communities and places of work.

She had the experience to

bring to the project: before that she was an elementary school teacher, Religious Education Director and Associate Director of Field Education at St. John’s Major Seminary. She received training in becoming a community organization with the Industrial Areas Foundation, and founded VOICE, Valley Organized in Community Efforts, bringing together people of various religious and professional backgrounds to achieve social and polical change in the San Fernando Valley.

All three Impact Award winners will be honored at the annual Fernando Foundation Awards dinner October 6 at the Warner Center Marriott. Tickets are available by calling the Foundation at 585-6589.

Trader Joe’s will open their 180th - and newest - “fresh format” grocery store in Calabasas on Friday, October 5 at 8 am. The store will be located in the Courtyard at the Commons in the old Babies “R” Us space at 23741 Calabasas Road. The chain does have locations in Woodland Hills, West Hills and Agoura. They are known for packaging innovative, hard-to-find, foods under the “Trader Joe’s” name. A brief “lei-cutting” ceremony will precede the official opening, which will have live music, food tastings, giveaways and more. The new store “captain” is Phil Gotto, a 25-year veteran of the company.

The Los Angeles County Coroner has reported that the Woodland Hills postal worker who was found dead in her truck this summer died of hyperthermia or heatstroke. Peggy Frank was found unresponsive in her postal truck, which was not equipped with air conditioning, on July 6 during a heatwave where temperatures reached 117 degrees. OSHA is investigating her death and may or may not issue a citation of violation. On the OSHA website they did cite two violations by USPS for two heat exhaustion cases and two heat-related deaths from 2012 to 2016.

For the first time, the City of Calabasas is offering discounted, pre-purchased tickets for the upcoming Pumpkin Festival. The annual festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21 from 10 am to 5 pm at Juan Bautista de Anza Park, 3701 Lost Hills Road. Tickets purchased before October 15 will be $5 per person; tickets purchased after that date and at the gate will be $10 per person (seniors and veterans/military with ID always $5, those under two free). Saturday there is free admission before 11 am for children six and under in costume. Tickets can be purchased at the DeAnza park office from 9 am to 9 pm, at Calabasas City Hall 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, the Calabasas Chamber, 23945 Calabasas Road, Suite 216 from 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center, 234009 Park Sorrento from 9 am to 6 pm daily. The burning questions on the minds of Calabasas residents can be answered at a community forum for City Council candidates on Tuesday, October 2.

Incumbents on the November 6 ballot, James Bozajian, Mary Sue Maurer and David Shapiro, will appear on the forum dais to answer questions about city government, development, poli-tics, crime and more.

The public is invited to the forum, which will be held at 7 pm at Founders Hall, 200 Civic Center Drive. The forum will be moderated by Kathleen Sterling, Valley News Group publisher. Questions may also be submitted online to notifications@cognitoforms.com.

The November 6 ballot for the three open City Council seat actually has four names on it. Calabasas resident and attorney Vahid Naziri filed to run for city council and then withdrew his name, but after the August 10 deadline to remove himself from the ballot.

“I wish I would have known

(about the deadline). It was just the circumstances that came after the fact. Had I known and knew there were three seats, three incumbents and myself, I would have withdrawn immediately.”

Naziri confirmed to Valley News Group that he is not campaigning, not running for office, and not participating in the October 2 forum.

He recently told a local newspaper that he withdrew because “I don’t know the issues as well as

the other candidates do.” He also said he has his eye on 2020 but is now seeking to be appointed to a city commission to gain “better understanding of the issues facing the community.”

The November election thus has the three incumbents running for three open seats. If Naziri had pulled his name from the list before August 10, there would be no need for the election, which has been said could cost the city up to $100,000.

All three incumbents have served multiple terms of office.

Bozajian, an attorney and was first elected to City Council in 1997, and served as Mayor five times from 1998-99, 2003-04, 2007-08, 2011-12 and 2015-16. He is the recipient of the Calabasas Chamber’s “Spirit of Calabasas Award” and the Calabasas Historical Society’s “Living History Award.”

Maurer was first elected to the Calabasas City Council in 2005 in 2005 and was re-elected to subsequent four year terms in 2009 and 2013. She has served as Mayor three time and is the head of the California Conservation Corp’s Camarillo Center.

Shapiro, also an attorney, was first elected to the City Council in 2013 and served as Mayor from 2014-15. He is currently Mayor Pro Tem and was appointed to the state League of California Cities Policy Committee and SCAG (Southern California Association of Governments) . He received the “Golden C” from Calabasas High School for exemplary service to the school.

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) Board of Directors and staff are proud of the fact that water rates for customers in our service area are among the lowest in the region. Senate Bill 998 – Discontinuation of Residential Water Service, authored by Senator Bill Dodd of Napa Valley, pulls the rug out from underneath these efforts.

The bill is intended to assist low-income earners that are having difficulty paying their water bills in a timely manner. It’s a one-size-fits-all solution that imposes strict requirements on water utilities before water service can be turned off for non-payment. The District and most other water agencies already have fair and customer-centric policies in place that have worked for years. Our guidelines include a 20-day delinquency period and ample customer notification before water service is disconnected for non-payment.

Good Intentions - Bad Consequencesrequire that non-payments be delinquent for at least 60 days (three times the current period) before any disconnection could occur. The bill would also prevent the thousands of water agencies throughout California from charging low-income earners late fees and would restrict reconnection charges to no more than $50, even if the cost of reconnection exceeds this amount. The bill also requires more reporting to the State, which will increase costs due to the need to hire additional staff to generate the reports. The bill is so ill-crafted that costly litigation is almost certain.

While the State’s intentions of helping to ensure that low-income earners have potable water is commendable, these good intentions can lead to bad consequences and higher bills for you. There are many more thoughtful and responsible options available such as the use of grant and rate assistance programs through charities funded by voluntary donations. For instance, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris recently introduced S. 3015 – the Water Affordability Act, which would help establish a low income sewer and drinking water assistance program at the federal level.

Senate Bill 998 will ultimately lead to higher rates and fees for everyone, shifting costs from late and non-paying customers to those like you who are in good standing. Ironically, increases in rates and fees will make it even harder for

answered the call and voted for additional taxes and fees to address the homeless population throughout the city.

In reviewing the current public discussions and following community meetings about the city establishing temporary homeless shelters in and around populated neighborhoods, I have found more and more of the same comments generating from residents and business owners alike. Not in my backyard or street or neighborhood. From Koreatown to the San Fernando Valley to the West Los Angeles area and down the 110 freeway to San Pedro the same comments are being repeated loud and clear by angry residents and frustrated business owners. Long-term residents that are not supporting the establishment of temporary or permanent homeless shelters in their neighborhoods.

The homeless situation is not improving in spite of the millions and millions of dollars that have been directed to rectify the matter. Placing a shelter here and there as proposed by the Mayor will not do the job

famously said, “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.” This is also true for the ancient dinosaurs relocated from “Jurassic Park” on Isla Nubar which is about to be destroyed by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption. Will they survive in the latest Jurassic film “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”?

All “Jurassic Park” motion pictures are based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Michael Crichton in 1990. The first film in the franchise, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993, introduced us to these long lost prehistoric creatures. And the good news for all dino lovers is they’re back yet again in Universal’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” now

available on DVD and Blu-ray.As the film begins, all

prehistoric creatures on Isla Nubar are once again on the verge of extinction due to an impending volcanic eruption. Before these fascinating, yet very dangerous beasts are wiped out forever billionaire Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell, “Babe”) asks Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to return to the endangered island and find the dinosaurs so they can be removed and relocated to a safer sanctuary. But sinister forces behind the scenes want to rescue the beasts and turn them into fierce weapons of war.

Soon Claire and Owen are in peril along with the dinosaurs and Lockwood’s 10 year-old granddaughter Maisie (Isabella Sermon). But as the story unfolds

the bad guys better watch out because they could be eaten by the fierce dinosaurs sequestered in the basement of the Lockwood mansion. Be prepared, there’s plenty of dino-action in the lively second portion of the film.

This latest installment, written by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, was directed by J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible” and the horror film “The Orphanage”).

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of science-fiction violence and peril.

DVD features include on- set interviews with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, “The Kingdom Evolves,” “Return to Hawaii,” “Island Action,” “Birth of the Indorapter,” “Death by Dino” and “Monsters in a Mansion.”

Despite LVMWD and hundreds of other water agencies warning the state legislature that this proposal would likely violate Proposition 26 and/or 218 that were meant to protect taxpayers, the bill made it through both houses and now sits on the Governor’s desk awaiting his signature on or before September 30. about our eyesight is that seeing specks or so-called floaters is cause for worry, but more often than not they are just a normal part of aging. Mostly, the small objects moving across your field of vision are actually tiny clumps of cells in the fluid inside your eyes. What you see is their reflection on the retina, the light-sensitive lining at the back of your eye.

F l o a t e r s may appear as dots, spots, circles, lines, clouds or cobwebs. They may be more noticeable when you are looking at a blank wall or a sheet of paper. Often they will break up on their own time – you become used to seeing spots – and suddenly they are gone.

Examining the situation of floaters, which may be distracting

or even alarming, the fact is that with age, the gel inside one’s eye called the vitreous shrinks or liquefies, giving more room for floaters to actually “float around.” In some circumstances, moving your eye around can make the

floaters disappear temporarily.Perhaps your disturbance

is more like a “flash” of light. Flashes are short bursts of light that occur when the retina is stimulated. Flashes can happen for the same reason as floaters do; because the vitreous gel is shrinking and either pushing against or pulling away from the

retina. It is also possible that

flashes can be the result of a blow to the head or a sign of a retinal tear.

Seeing spots or flashes in your line of vision may resolve

themselves , but if either lingers or gets bigger and interferes with your sight, you are advised to call your doctor right away. The problem could be more serious. In some cases, the vitreous can pull away from the eye,

causing the retina to tear. An untreated torn or

detached retina can lead to sight loss.

it is intended to do. While the Mayor travels around the country what many say is his testing the waters for a presidential run, the situation continues to grow and get worse. A recent proposed temporary homeless shelter in Koreatown drew an angry response from the community. The original plan was pulled back to calm the hostility of the community. The local councilman learned that you must work with the community and not force any type of homeless shelter on a community. In particular a community that is organized and ready to protect the residents and business owners.

A recent discussion in the San Fernando Valley at a local community meeting drew loud chants from the audience to recall the councilman that proposed a shelter in the community.

The mayor thought that it would be appropriate for each of the 15 city council districts to find a suitable location to establish homeless shelters that would serve the homeless population. The problems is that the homeless population numbers have grown more and continue to expand at an ever increasing rate. A temporary shelter here and there will not solve the situation of people living on the streets in tents and using the public right of way as their toilets. Compassion is one thing that all of us should have for our fellow human beings and all living creatures. The problem is that along with compassion comes respect for others and common decency. There must be a balance with the homeless population and residents that deserve to live in peace and tranquility.

We have found that additional taxes for all of us and additional fees on the building industry have not brought about a solution to the increasing homeless population. Along with taxes and fees comes leadership and cooperation. At this time, city hall leadership is lacking and cooperation with residents and business owners has not been effectively established. The saga of the Homeless negative impact on your community continues in spite of you paying increasing tax dollars to hopefully resolving the situation.

When you travel around the city, you will find may residential units being built. Condos and Apartments are sprouting up everywhere.
