Welcome to Shebeen Flick 2018

In curating the programme for this year’s festival, we paid special attention to the balance in genre and format but also the balance in gender.

We were delighted to see a whopping 234 % increase in submissions by female filmmakers when compared to 2017. As a result, for the first time, we were able to achieve a 50-50 % gender balance in the selected feature films and to celebrate, we put together a shorts programme focusing on the female perspective titled The Female Gaze. Setting the tone from the very beginning, we kick-off the festival with KISSING CANDICE, a female-centred story directed by director Aoife McArdle.

This year’s festival is also expanding in regard to format. For the first time, the festival will include a Virtual Reality experience. SONG OF THE SEA VR will take the audience into an immersive experience based on the Oscar® nominated animation of the same title by Irish director Tomm Moore. The programme will also include the wacky 6-part story THE MUSTERING OF THE HARRIER. The screening also includes a live performance and requires audience participation – sheer fun.

Over four days in Berlin and a weekend in Düsseldorf, the festival will present a number of gems such as the poignant SCHOOL LIFE and the German Premieres of the inspiring AMANDA COOGAN: LONG NOW, the thrilling WITHOUT NAME and the knockout Roller Derby documentary REVOLUTIONS.

In short, 2018 is Shebeen Flick’s year for conceptual expansion. We hope to share this experience with you and indulge in broadening our horizons together through the delightful world of storytelling.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

HELLO DUSSELDORF!

"My husband and I moved to Dusseldorf with very little knowledge of Germany or of the German language. Heike gave us very practical support (calling landlords, translating for us, filling out paperwork, accompanying us to our visa appointments...) and was also very kind, compassionate, and funny. We are so grateful for everything she has done for and with us, and happy to call her our first friend in Germany."
