Welcome!

A very warm welcome to the 9th annual South Yorkshire Dementia Creative Arts Exhibition. It is a great honour to be able to show artwork created by people affected by dementia in South Yorkshire, and further afield, in the magnificent Sheffield Cathedral.

The theme of this year’s exhibition is Places and Times. As you look around your exhibition you will see and read how this has been interpreted by various people with a diagnosis of dementia, families, care practitioners and members of the public. Dementia should make us all think and the exhibition is intended to do just that. Not by scaring you with numbers or promising you a cure: but instead by prompting you to consider how similar we all are in what we experience, what we hope for, where we’ve been, what we’ve seen, remember or regret.

Here, at the South Yorkshire Dementia Creative Arts Exhibition, I hope that you will think again about dementia, and give credit where credit is due for the skills, abilities and insights people retain or develop, despite or because of the changed but equal lives they lead. A selection of images from SYDCAE 2017 are contained within this brochure but you will see that there is far more than this on display around Sheffield Cathedral. I hope you enjoy your exhibition.

Study of a Walking Boot

“Jeff joined an art group at Chapel Town when he retired. He had never really painted before. These pictures were done before he started with memory problems in 2014. He cannot paint like he used to but still enjoys participating and he also enjoys meeting with his friends” Jeff Hutchinson, Sheffield

Hallamshire Family Tree

“We had some very interesting and fun sessions in the lounge bouncing around ideas for limericks between the residents and staff. I was amazed at the positive response from most of the residents when I read their limerick out to them. I placed the tree on display in the foyer of the Hallamshire Care Home until the time of the Exhibition”

Lost

“These works are sketches of communication cards used for specific needs. ‘Lost' is on the exterior. The interior reads: ‘I'm not sure where we are. I'm afraid. Can you please remind me where we are and what we're doing?'”

Screening of ‘Gracie’

“This is a project very close to my heart. I lost my own Grandmother to vascular dementia after a long struggle, and before seeing the effect of dementia first hand, my understanding of the illness, as a young person was almost non-existent. I wanted to draw upon my experience, and give insight into what life is like for both a dementia sufferer, and their family”

Matthew will be attending a screening of ‘Gracie’ at Sheffield Cathedral on Tuesday 27th June, 1pm-3pm – and answering questions about the film. Everyone is welcome.

Places and Times

“Hand-made 'Places and Times' card. Media: A4 piece of white card, folded in half, brush to apply blue dye and to create textures for the sky. Used black, red, white, silver card to create the images on the card.

Applied the images by building up layers, using glue to stick into position. Used word on home p.c to type and print the title in blue ink, 'Places and Times'” Karen Vaille, Mapplewell Manor, Barnsley

Seeing Red

“In the locked setting where I work, residents will intermittently, heartbreakingly forget why they are separated from people they love or may even build an attachment with staff and then feel abandoned and rejected when the interaction finishes. Angry feelings come and go particularly at times of transition, recognising and acknowledging them is crucial”

Hannah Godfrey, Art Psychotherapist, Sheffield

Moments in Time

On Thursday 29th June, 2.30-4pm, there will be a spoken word event at Sheffield Cathedral, entitled ‘Moments in Time’. Everyone is welcome to come along and take part. Diane Hinchliffe will be reading a mixture of some of her own poetry along with poetry created with individuals in her work, and supporting others to read their original work as part of the 2017 South Yorkshire Dementia Creative Arts Exhibition. Diane says the event promises:

“A poetic sharing of words capturing a thought, a feeling and the essence of what is seen, heard or felt in the moment”

Jigsaw of Memories

“Our memories are like a jigsaw, sometimes not quite fitting together. But however disjointed, shadowy or fleeting we all have those golden moments that bring us joy and light when we recall them”

Unfinished

“Don started creating art at the age of 9 when he first moved to the states and had a wonderful art teacher. He is always working on his art. He says a piece is never done. He’s gone from professional art showings to decorating his room and various offices at the facility. We love Don’s art!“

Richard Bently

“This is a dyadic piece from art therapy with a resident Richard Bently, he has given his permission for it to be used. I asked him to help me to create an image and we made this one together. He does not consider himself an artist and would find it very hard to start a piece independently but to encourage the stimulation of the activity and the sociable and creative benefit as well as the occupational and psychological angles, I encourage him to come to art therapy despite him not feeling he is a ‘good artist’. He was rather pleased with this though! He very much enjoyed the interactiveness of making it together, like having a conversation on paper”.

Red Hot

“I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in my 40's. My artworks help me focus. I paint every day. I try to work in response to music and let the art flow. These designs will be used in a clothing line”

Time and Travel

“The piece represents contemplation in anticipation of the next journey. The girl is planning her next adventure and is supported by wisdom, knowledge and the optimism of youth. Where she is at the moment and where her plans will take her are both suspended together simultaneously in her mind's moment of reflection.”
