MIKE, PATSY, AND MICHAEL

A PIGTORAL REPORT

Page 6: Sheffield Mike Patsy 1972 Chile

PASTIt all started with a letter from

Ed Holt, missionary in Chile, Hewrote and asked us to pray aboutcoming down to the work in Chile.Pray we did, and after 36 preaching dates and uncountable miles,we arrived at the airport in Santiago. It was a great day for us,the climax of months of work and

prayer. It was the greatest stepof faixh we have taken thus far,and we praise God for allowing usto come. The coming weeks wereexciting ones, filled with wonderment and strange new things, but soon we were beginning to getsettled and needed to think of

the next most important thing onour agenda... Ianguage study.AgainGod had His hand in our 1 ives as

we were able to enroll on the

same day as we went to apply, and

WORKING UNDER THIS SHADOW

were in classes within three

weeks of getting here. We werein classes 2 hours a day, studying many hours daily also. Thattook most of our time, but we alsohad the task of registering ourselves with the government, getting our things out of customs, and finding a place to live. Wehad to learn how to spirituallycrawl, walk, and finally run ailover again. But, it was a greatlesson in humbleness, and God indeed made us realize that we

weren't the greatest things Hehad to use. We were able to getour things out of customs withoutany trouble, an almost unheard ofthing here, and soon also foundus a home. We moved into our

home in November, and began thinking of the future work.

PRESENTPASSING OUT TRACTS

The opportunity arose for us tobegin ministering to the smallchurch at Curacav1,about 35 milesfrom Santiago, The church hadnever had any converts and hadreally been there in buildingonly. We did have very good facilities for the church,as it wasalso the home of the central zone

camp. Soon,we were having a housefull every Sunday night, and hadour first Evangelistic service inJanuary of 1972. There were over200 for this night, and we simplyexplained who we were and what wewere doing there. That began someof the adults coming on a regularbasis, and then we had our secondEvangelistic night one month later. This time, Miguel Gonzalez, evangelist from Santlago, preachedand we showed a film on the life

of Christ. There were not as many

there this time, but many moreadults attended. That night, fivecame forward to begin studying ina regular basis in their homes. Now, we are preparing for ourfirst crusade there, which willbe in Apri I.Most of our time, however, hasbeen spent with the correspondencecourse which Ed Holt and I havebeen working on. We finally gotit printed in February of '72,and were able to pass out over50,000 during a month. With thecourse only I month old at thiswriting, we already have over 100students, with more coming Indally. We used many young peoplein the surrounding towns andchurches, which helped them learnsomething of personal evangelismand helped us reach more homesmore quickly. We look forward toa year of work with this tool.

FUTUREMichael is very happy. Know why?He was celebrating his 2nd birthday here, and it was a day tocelebrate. We parents, of course, thought back to 2 short years agowhen he came, and wondered at howshort the time had been. It is

I ! ke that in all of our li fe.

Like the saying "Only one life'Twill soon be past. Only what'sdone for Christ will last", wefeel our time may be short here.We would like to ask a specialfavor of you, right now...help usmake these short years here asproductive as they can be for Him.Give, not only of money, but oftime inprayer and help with teaching. Come down and see the work. The future is bright for Michael,

GROWING INTEREST IN COURSE

Since the first lessons came off

the press only a few months ago, many people have taken an amazing interest. At the presenttime, there are 2,000 students. Many of them are from Santiago, and a surprising number of theseare from upper class homes. Manymore are from the larger citiesof Chile and their suburbs. With

one ad in a national newspaperwe were able to get 400 students. The follow-up is now going intoeffect. This will take most of

my time as we I I as Ed's.We couldeffectively employ 100 young menor women forljear without stop, when we finally reach our goal of10,000 for the first year.

THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH THE MISSIONARIES

On June i3-i6 we were involved in one of the spiritual retreats of whichwe have been a part since they began in December of last year. Thereare five missionary families involved, & what a blessing these meetingshave been! Our discussions this month were directed at the Holy Spiritand the spiritual gifts. I feel that we really have learned more aboutthe Holy Spirit and what He can and will do in our lives if we will justlet Him.

Each day, we had a three hour session in the morning and also a threehour session in the afternoon. We discussed different problems we hadand questions on this subject that were bothering us. At night, after... alI of the children had

been put to bed, we had aprayer session that youwould have to have been a

part of to know just whata blessing was receivedfrom it. We praise theLord that we have been a

part of these & are eagerly awaiting the next inSeptember. As you can seefrom the~picture, this Isa happy looking group. Wehave the Lord to thank for

the abilitytodo His work.

NEW FORWARDING AGENT!

As you probably noticed from the address on the front of this paper, wehave a new forwarding agent. She is a member of Antioch Christian Churchand has been for many years. She is a pianist there, and a very fine, dependable Christian woman. We pray that you will write to her and encourage her by letting her know you are praying for her. It isn't aneasy job, and It requires quite a bit of time.

We hope that you will excuse any inconvlence that unanswered- letters orcards may cause during this change. Please be praying for her, and feelfree to write any time.

M ICHAEL'S MEDITATIONS

Well, very soon this article willbe known as "Mjchad's Meditationsand Company". I will be addinganother memberto the staff aroundDecember of this year,i*f all contracts go through all right andthe delivery agency has no problems. Getting good help thesedays Is such a problem, so I putIn an order through Mother & Daddy to get some help on these articles, as well as cleaning my

etc., that I don't like, and soforth. Evidently, because of thelabor contracts, mother won't beable to deliver with her part ofthe bargain until December. Inthe meantime,Daddy Is helping me»But, he keeps up this constantbarrage of "Sister or Brother"stuff. Doesn't he know that wentout with the stork and all that?i know that you get exactly whatyou order from New York, where thebaby factory is, & I specified alittle brother helper from the beginning. Importation is a littletight in Chile now, but I feelcertain that he can enter without

too much trouble. Anyway, Motherneeds a little more work to do

around the house now as she seemsto be eating so much more. She isso much larger! At any rate, I'llkeep you postedorrthe negotiationsof the labor contracts, and immediately upon delivery of thefinal contract,we will begin publishing our part of the letter

5 0 S P E L ...CHARIOT!

It doesn't look like/much of a different car, but it is! Asmall, red 1970 Datsun that is sitting out there right nowin the rain! It looks like m^y other cars that you see upand down the streets of Santiago and the Country of Chile. But it is different! It is a gift of God through His Peoplefor the work here,in Chile. We are so grateful to Him andto His church for their help, that we can't say how much. Wewere able to get our ,c'ar With very little difficulty, andit has helped the work.so greatly,

I got the "green light" from our forwarding agent on the money the last Mon-day of April. I looked some that day but didnot get in too big of a hurry as I felt time was not important. The next day the price on new cars went up 30^ on theoffical market, and much more unoffically! That meant thatused cars would be going up also. Tuesday I looked at thelittle Datsim, W'ednesday I tried it out, Thursday the moneycame and Priday it was liscensed and in my name. It hasgone up 1/3 in value since the time I bought it! Quite aninvestment in the Lord's work, and we pray it was the rightdecision.

Since getting the car, the work has greatly improved. Weare going to Curacavi, now 2 times a week to teaching and for'class sessions in homes^ ^There-h^ve also been possibilitiesof starting new churches further out, but the greatest thingis the the increase in t^ime I now have to further the Lord's'work! It also helps in study time,;and extra time for myfamily. It looks like any other car^. BUT IT IS TRULY GOD'SGOSPEL CHARIOT HERE!

CURACAVI — Tliere were two new Christians born on the Sunday of May 21st, Bro. Luiz and Sister Snieda are now newbabes in Christ, but already they are beginning to show areal love in Christ to others. There are now 6 baptizedChristians in the church at Curacavi, aiid many more arethinking and studying the possibilities of giving theirlives to Christ. The attendance is runing aroimd 100 forthe young people's service and about 40 for the adult preavching. A special service was held in the home of a newChristian family on Tues. night and there were 20 adultswith numerous children crowded into the small 2 room house.Sister Lydia, wife of Bro. Luiz, had dedicated herself towinning her 11 children and their families to the Lord!Already, she has personally led her husband, 2 neighbors, and is working on her 2 oldest sons and their families.

SANTIAGO —I had the priviledge of speaking at the Santa -Rosa Church last Sunday night as their preacher was out oftown. That church is buying new property to increase theirmeeting place to hold the ever-growing numbers. I am working to start, a new church in my home on Friday night usingfilmstrips. This is the middle to upper class of people, and the results may be a little slow. Pray for this work!

CASABLANCA —Plans are being laid for a gospel team to beformed to start a new church in this town, which is about45 miles from Santiago. It is on the other side of Curacavi and has a population of 15-000. Gospel literature isbeing used now and a crusade will be held in October, then, the church will begin to function soon after that. Theteam is comprised of Julio Carreno of Valparaiso, AlbertoGonzalez of Osofno and myself,

CORRESPONDENCE COURSE — VJe now have 1 ,500 students plus, 'as the course grows daily! Several national adds have helped in the attendance. Soon, the follow-up will begin, andtrained workers will be needed. There are 400 studentsalone in Santiago, 300 in the 3rd largest city of Concep-cion, and many others.

"OUT GRINGO!!!'" •.,

What was that I hear? A riot against foreigners? A distressed left-winger chanting slogans in front of our house?NO! it is just Michael and his flop-eared dog, Gringo! ButI'll let Michael tell it..,,"We got Gringo from Curacavi,He is part everything, and that makes him even- more sjreciaL.to me. They called him "Ringo" and we just couldn't resistthe temptation to call him Gringo. He is still just a pup,but already has made himself known. He loves to read myDaddy's paper for him, but unfortunately Gringo reads alot with his paws and teeth! Daddy dosen^t imderstandGringos troubles at wanting to know the news and sure doesget excited.. Mother h\mg out some clothes and Gringothought they were dry and tried to help her bring them in!You'd have thought he'd committed a major crime! But,Gringo is really a good dog. He can speak 2 languages.Growl and Spanish. When Daddy hollers at him to Get outside, he goes, and when Mommy yells "Puera" he also goes. But you don't have a dog that smart, do you?"

"WHAT'CHA BEEN DOIH'?"

Many people have written and some have been asking, "Whathave you been doing since you came to Chile?" The answer ispretty simple and may shock you, "Nothing!!!" We have notdone anything, but Christ through us has been doing miraclesin all areas, Since being in Chile, Christ has:

Taught us to communicate in the Spanish language; given us ahome with adequate space for office and to grow in; given usa fruitful ministry of serving and preaching in Curacavi, where He has added 10 children to His church; enrolled almost3000 students in the correspondence course, and caused anunheard of response to His course, through brother Ed Holt.

He has given us such a burden for souls that He has plantedan idea for church evangelism in a new and marvelous way. He.is opening the door for a tent to be made in Chile, a full-time evangelistic team to preach and travel the country, following up on the course. He continues to open doors andplace burdens for us to do here. This plan will mean HisName will be preached and His church started in 6 areas eachyear.

He has blessed us with health, security in His arms, a newness of the Holy Spirit in our lives and His (the Holy Spirit's) comforting ministry has.led us on to greater thingsfor Him, He has given us a car;>to travel and do the workwith, and has also taught us how to be patient with all thetimes it has had to be fixed. H_e has given.us money^to buyBibles, Sunday School literature to be used, a comp'leteEnglish library, and. other additional literature . He is-wonderful;^ marvelous, and all.-powerful. "V/hat'cha beendpin* in Chile?": - "Nothin'" But Christ has done it all through us and anyone else who lets Him work. "V/hat'cha beendoing for Christ where you live?"

BOLD NEW PLAN FOR EVANGELISM!!!

The course is not growing, it is multiplying. The problem issimple but wonderful; how to follow-up all the students andwin them to the Lord Jesus Christ. After much prayer andtalking with other missionaries, it was agreed upon that thebest method will be the formation of ah__ev^gelistic team ^—which would work with a large tent holding^crusades throughout the country, beginning with those areas which have themost students and working from there. For example in Con-cepcion, 3rd largest city in Chile, we have no churches.but .almost 1000 students. No trained workers from Santiago toabout 300 miles south, and then from there to another 300miles we have no churches. Basically, and briefly, this isthe planiI. Preparatory team—2 members—2 months., prepare for the

Crusade, secure site for tent, etc.II. Reviv-al team—6 members-2 months. 2 & 3 week crusades in

one area, with street preaching and nightly services.Securing of building., for converts and intensive evangelistic service's daily. . ,

III. Follow-up team. 2 members—2 months. Follow-up revivaland train church, set up S.S.' classes, teacher training.

This is the basic plan. More details soon!' Give, and Pray!!!

PATSY'S PONDERINGS

We just had a suggestion recently that we have an article .from a woman's view, and we thought it was a good idea. Hopeyou enjoy it, and if you have any questions about anything-Iwrite, please write and ask me.

I had my first experience with making peanut butter lastweek. That was quite an experience., You all probably knowby now that there are many things we have in- the states thatare not available to us here—it just so happens that peanutbutter is among this group. It was quite a job having totake the skins off the 21bSo of peanuts, running them through a meat grinder, and then through the blender. We added 2pounds of butter and about ^ a cup of honey. It turned outtasting like peanut butter, but it definitely didn't havethe texture of Jiffy Peanut butter. Try it sometime whenyou feel like an adventure.

...

As you all probably know by now, we are expecting another ^baby in December. Many of you have asked about the Doctors, hospitals, medicine, etc. So I would like to tell a littleabout this. The hospitals here are very modern. While a newmother is in the hospital, the baby is put in the room withher. The mother can take care of the baby as she likes butwith one exception. They don't allow you to use diaper pins. They tie the baby up in the diaper. It sounds crazy, but itis their custom. They say that pins are just too dangerous.I can tell you more about this after I've had the baby. Ihave a very good doctor. He studied in the USA for two orthree years, and is one of the best in Chile, The medicinesituation here,is still really good, but who can tell aboutthese things. Some medicines aren't available now, but usu- '•ally there is a substitute. If not, and it is an emergency, you. can call the radip station here, and they will ask forsomeone to- take it to where ever it is needed. They don'thave to worry, about this too much now. We are in the Lord'shands and He has taken care of us so very well since v/e havebeen here. How could we say that He isn't a wonderful God?

I would like very much to have any criticism or suggestionsas to this article. Please write also and give me some ideasas to what you would like to know about here in Chile. Maythe Lord bless you all. Please pray for us. Love Patsy

A YEAR OF PREPARATION—

Mike,Patsy, and Michael steppedoff the plane in Santiago on September 14th to begin their workhere with other Christians. It

has been a year of work and progress. The first few months werespent in moving Into a home, intensive language study, and generally getting settled. They wereworking with othermlssionary families In the works here.

They were called to Chile tohelp with the follow-up on a correspondence course started by afellow missionary, Ed Holt. During much of the time Mike was traveling with Ed distributing literature for the course and visit

ing churches tel 11 ng of the course. After about 6 months on the field

they took over the work at Cura-cavi with the help of Bro. Ed.Curacavi is a small town of about10,000 about 30 miles from Santiago. There had been a churchbuilding forani/nber of years, butvery little had been done in the

way of evangelism. As they worked together in the community, thechurch began to grow.As Ed^s workwith the course increased, he began phasing out of the work atCuracavi and more and more wasbeing done by the brethren of theChurch. At this writing there are10 members of the church. They areplanning for their own crusadeSeptember 20-30 in which they wl I Itry to win their own people. EdHolt plans to leave the work inSeptember and the Sheffield's ashort time later. This work has

helped to showthe need for a larger & more fully developed evangelistic plan to start and buildchurches.

EVANGEL I STiC PLANS FOR CHILE

It is my prayer for Chile to bewon for Chirst,as It is for everyChristian brother here. But, todo this we must think big, personally, and be led by the HolySpirit in all that we do. Therefore, It is with much prayer thatI present this planfor evangelizing the country of Chile.

lBM»t Hull

We are faced with a problem, but it is one of those problems that Ilike. At the present time, (September, 1972) we have well over 3,000students in the correspondence course. The number grows daily and the opportunity for evangelism grows with it. There is another problem; thisone not so likeable. We are sorely lacking personneI...in churches, inmembers. In leaders in Chile. We have the opportunity of starting a realmovement in Chile but this will take time, work, and sacrifices on allconcerned. The grand total of churches of the Church of Christ ChristianChurches in Chile is 23. Of this number, the largest is probably no morethan 100 members, and many are less than 25 in adult attendance. Out ofalmost 10 million people, this is a very poor percentage. From Santiagosouth, we have only I church for almost 450 miles, with towns of over100,000 almost every 60 miles. Our works are small for the most part, butthose we have are growing. We are few in number, few in strength, few inchurches, but with Jesus Christ, we are a majority!

Faced with these "problems",both good and bad, I present this plan forthe evangelism of the country of Chile & for the growthof the work here.

The evangelistic "team" wi I I be made up of more or less 10 members, andwill be divided up into these parts:

Church preparation team (4 months preparation; 2-4 members).A. Two member preparation team.

1. Secure building (temporariIy) for meeting house, etc.2. Visit all persons in the correspondence course.3. Set up home "cottage" prayer meetings in areas.

^ There is an old story that is told about prayer and asking God forthings. A church out in the dry southwest{where it is really dry!) wentwithout rain for many months. The people knew the need for rain was pressing, and decided to go up on a nearby hillside to pray for rain until itcame. Some 100 people gathered on the hill to ask God to send the rain, believing with all their hearts that He would. There, standing in themidst, was one sweet old lady, who happened to be the only one in ICQwho had believed enough to carry an umbrella!! I stand with my umbrellain hand, and am looking like Elijah from Mount Carmel. The tent will 'bepaid for by the time you read this, reducing that need to $500.00. Thereis a small cloud on the horizon,it^s God sending the rain! I've prayed,God is going to do it, and my umbrella is open.

Greetings to you from summer-time Chile! We want to take this opportunity to wish you a veryChrist-Filled Christmas and New Year dedicated to Him. As we ore separated by many miles, butour hearts are with you there in your homes and churches as you work for the kingdom there.

We are patienly awaiting the coming of our next little one. He or she is due to be born betweenthe 15 th and X th of December, which mokes the date just about Christmas time. We are lookingforward to this new one with much excitement and joy as God has blessed us with another life toraise for Him. Potsy is feeling fine these days, just a little uncomfortable as is to be expected.Little Michael helps her considerably around the house and is continually talking of his little brother. There has never been a doubt in his mind that it would be a little boy. Hope the little girl conlearn to play football quickly, so that be won't be too disapointed. 1have been feeling great, only occasionally bogged-down by the traditional sicknesses. The work is challenging and keepsme busy a lot of the time, but I wouldn't have it any otner way.

The blessings of the Lord have been so great this last year that I don't know where to begin countingthem. We began the year knowing so very little Spanish and not sure exactly where the Lord wantedus to work the hardest. We started on a full-time basis with the small church in Curacavf with classes

of young people only. During April of that year we held the first campaingn for the church there inwhich the first Christians were converted to Christ. From the 4 that were baptized, we worked towardbuilding up the church more and more. Sunday School attendance averaged well over 100 weekly withseveral more adults accepting Christ and working with His church. Plans were made for a large tentcampaign to be held, the first with the new tent, and attendances ran about 400 to 500 nightly for 10days. From this campaign, 64 were added to the church, of which about 50 adults proved faithful. The church now has it's own preacher, is attempting to win the community without "gringo" help, andis laying plans for on outreach program to win another city to Christ. God has really worked a miraclewith the church in Curacavf, and we pray that from it we have learned enough to be able to do withHis help the some throughout various parts of Chile.

Also during this year our definite plans were laid for the starting and building of a Christian movementin Chile. Ed Holt, Jeff.Myers):' dhd m^elf banded together to form an evangelistic organization inwhich we would ottefhpt a three-prong attack against Satan and his forces. Ed Holt is using an extensivecorrespondence cours^-which now has over 5,000 students. By this means we have been able to make

Page 30: Sheffield Mike Patsy 1972 Chile

contacts in many homes throughout Chile* When there Is on established groups meeting In anareo/a campaign for 4 months is held to preach the gospel nightly and to train the new members In theirown personal iDvongellsm. The final phase of the plan Is the training of notional leaders;whlch willbe done by training seminary we will be starting In March of this yMr. Jeff Myere will hove thecargo of this mammoth |ob^ as we will all be helping him In his work here* So far# we have about20 men Interested In starting the course which will one year* It will be basic. Intensive, andfollowed by other Intensive courses by correspondence* In this way we hope to have a movementof Independent churches seeking only to be Christian here In Chile* .

\We hove also seen the political situation worsen here In Chile with continual strife and hatred*How much flme we hove left only God knows, but we ore determined to continue working until

-— thnt time wp hnve to lenve-the-work-here. Wo-of^troining^-thcKchurches to be independeni omHotake the Initiative to win others to Christ* Acost of living rise of over '150 plus Increasinglyhigher prices have caused things to be a little difficult to find and buy* We ask you to be prayingfor the country oftd especially for the Christians who ore without many of the things that you In theU*S* take for granted*

Our Immediate needs for the work here are many* For the work-to progress on a scale that we feelIs necessary considering the time we hove In Chile and condition of the country, we ask that youwould honestly consider these needs and pray for them Individually*

Our greatest need at the present is a large 21/2 ton truck to be used as a portable chapel andtrasportatlon for the tent* During the campaigns this truck will be used as a portable chapel topreach In the streets and transport the ^ent^anjUgulpm^t., Total cost will be approximately $2*500*00*

The flani payment on the large properfy^y^f^ will serve as seminary and offices must bemade before the end of the yed^ Hj^s propejiyii^tTrbe used as offices for the "El Encuentro"correspondence course, for the evonglFisFt^flces end also for the offices of the seminary*- As wellps classrooms, some students will be living on the property for the one year school term* As thereIS no credit and properties go up on equivolent of $500*00 weekly, we were forced to buy{immediatelyand pay 80% down* The final 20% will be paid the end of the year and this part of the payment Ismine to pay*—It will be only $1, 500,00 opproximotoly, but rnuot bo iwadc In one lump suiii*

Included In the plans for the next year ara^upurdigsmg^ pr^^^ which will be used as meetingplacps for the graduates of the course onC^w^ChEisJjgQSs^^ will be bought, the campal^sheld on the properties, and It will be the responsibility of the new Christians to build their own meetinghouses and worship chapels. But, as Ihave explained, everything must be bought Inmedlotely andF^d for In cosh, which necesitotes the money on hand for such ventures* They ore estimating onother100% cost of living rise after the last of the year, which will put the'properties completely out ofrange for us* • ,

God has been so good to us all these last days, that we know He Is getting ready for greater harvest ofsouls before He comes. We look forward to His coming or to the exciting prospect of working for Himuntil He comes* We ask you continued! prayers for us, for an occasional letter keeping us Informed ofthe church growth where you are working In the kingdom*

Go bless each and every one of you during this time* Prdlse God that He came to be with us, to diefor us, and now lives with us dolly!

In His name.
