INTRODUCTION

The IASS-SLTE 2014 Symposium, encompassing the annual IASS Symposium and the 6th Latin-American Symposium on Tension Structures, will take place from 15 to 19 September, 2014, in Brasilia, during an exciting period in Brazil, soon after the 2014 World Cup, and prior to the 2016 Olympic Games.Organized by the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, the IASS-SLTE 2014 Symposium will be an outstanding opportunity to display many novel and daring structures, built for these events and for the urban revitalizations aimed to improve the quality of life of Brazilian citizens and welcome visitors from all over the world. It will be also an opportunity to celebrate the masterpieces of Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, designers of Brazil’s Capital, the only modern city included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

SYMPOSIUM VENUE

The Symposium will take place at the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center, located within walking distances to major hotels, restaurants and market places, a 15-minute ride to Brasilia’s international airport, and just beside the magnificent Brasilia’s National Stadium, constructed for the 2014 World Cup.

involved in this aspect of structural engineering, whether as designers, architects, engineers, constructors, clients, operators or researchers. To achieve its goals, the Association publishes a quarterly International Journal, sponsors the technical activities and colloquia of several Working Groups and publishes state-of-the-art reports and recommendations on design and construction. It organizes annual International Symposia on themes of general interest to engineers, architects and builders and co-sponsors other conferences – often with partner organizations or associations.

The 1st Latin American Symposium on Tensile Structures (1st SLTE) took place in São Paulo, in 2002, providing a remarkable push to the development of tension structures in Latin America and opening the way for a successful series: the 2nd SLTE was held in Caracas, in 2005, under the auspices of IASS. It led to the creation of the Latin American Network on Tension Structures (TensoRed, www.latensored.org), with the goal of sharing knowledge and promoting the technology in Latin America. The 3rd Symposium was held in Acapulco, jointly with the Annual Symposium of the IASS (IASS-SLTE 2008). It was the first time that these events welcomed papers in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The 4th Symposium took place in 2011 in Montevideo, and the 5th one took place in Santiago of Chile.

THEME AND TOPICS

Shells, membranes and spatial structures, by their intrinsic properties of lightness and low material consumption, their capacity of spanning large distances and rising high above the ground, may contribute to reduce our ecological footprints and improve our urban environments. The theme “Shells, Membranes and Spatial Structures: Footprints” merges the scopes of the two joint symposia, welcoming reports on conceptual design, structural design and analysis, structural morphology, shape finding and optimization, computational design tools, innovative, recyclable and engineered materials, structural detailing, construction technologies, and the urban, environmental and historical aspects of either traditional or innovative structural systems.

ABOUT IASS AND TENSORED

The International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS), founded in 1959, aims the achievement of progress in the design, analysis and construction of lightweight structural systems, such as lattice, tension, membrane, and shell structures, through an interchange of ideas among all those interested and
