I hope to bring a different perspective to this familiar story first told by our Lord. He is the master teacher and His teachings bring insight, wisdom and direction to our lives. He inspires and motivates us as well as challenges and prepares us. He, after all, is our Savior and our King. Then He said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all to- gether, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living… Luke 15:11-13. You know the story. You have read and heard it taught many times to teach different lessons. So here is the challenge: Describe the younger son at the time he is preparing to leave home. What did he look like, his level of confidence, self-esteem, his feeling of entitlement, security, and health? Can we assume that he was fit and healthy because he was willing and able to leave home and journey into a far country? Can you picture him? Do we see him as a very confident; if not arrogant, healthy, well to do young man that planned to live life to its fullest? As the story unfolds and “things” don’t go as he had envisioned his confidence, security, self-esteem and health undergo a dramatic transformation. Can you picture him now? Verse 14 spent all he had, broke, be- gan to be in want; 15 humiliated and desperate; 16 Starving with No one to help him-alone; 17 Perishing; 19 Unworthy. Now compare the two images of the same son. A young man on top of the world transformed into a defeated, physically depleted shell of his former self. Well-dressed to rags and starving, we would be safe to assume that the young man who left home held little resemblance to the one desperately returning. But here is the point-even though the young man returning looked much different from when he left home and saw himself much differently, the father recognized him as His son anyway! From afar off! The father ran to meet him to walk the last part of the journey with him! He was no longer alone. The father, his father rejoiced and celebrated that his son was home! Now the Real challenge: We must look at ourselves. Are we ungrateful, arrogant, and willing to leave the security of our Father’s care? Do we mistakenly believe we can make it on our own? OR are we beaten down, alone and believe we once were but no longer are worthy of the Father’s grace and love? Do we believe we no longer deserve to be called a child of God? Were we once secure but walked away and now feel that we can’t return home. Though you may see yourself much differently now than you once did, the Father, your Father is standing, watching, waiting for your return. He will welcome you home! Come home!
