Contractor stows heavy welding tanks and installs Viega ProPress® in Sheraton New York HotelLocated between Central Park and Times Square, the Sheraton New York Hotel offers luxurious accommodations with a rich history and now this famous hotel has a new domestic water system thanks to Viega ProPress.

In� nity Mechanical of New Hyde Park, NY, installed all the piping in all the hotel’s units from the � fth to the 20th � oors and from the 33rd to 50th � oors, for a total of approximately 1,300 individual units.

“It was Viega ProPress for everything,” In� nity Mechanical President Joe Alagna said, “including new piping for the units and the mains also, the main piping and all the branching to all the units — thousands of � ttings.”

In� nity Mechanical has been in business for more than 15 years and the Sheraton New York Hotel renovation was their � rst experience with Viega ProPress. In� nity has completed many different types of projects, ranging from smaller jobs to large machine rooms. They install piping from 3⁄8" to 24". Most of the � ttings In� nity installed for the New York Sheraton Hotel project ranged from 1⁄2" to 3⁄4" but the mains’ piping ranged from 11⁄2" to 2".

“Everything was smooth,” Alagna said. “The � ttings were nice and heavy. I don’t think we had one leak where we pressed it correctly. I was pretty impressed.”

The New York Sheraton Hotel has been a landmark in New York for more than 50 years, playing host to A-list celebrities, United States presidents, world leaders, industry executives and many other famous personalities known all over the world.

The Sheraton’s $160 million renovation included a complete redesign and expansion of all 1,750 guest rooms, 206 club-level

rooms and 31 suites on their property. The accommodations are now larger and feature upgraded in-room amenities. With more than 1,987 units and 59,000 square feet of meeting space, the Sheraton New York Hotel is an experience in modern luxury.

In� nity had such a great experience with Viega ProPress that they also installed it in another prestigious New York hotel, the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel across the street from the United Nations headquarters.

They worked on 20 � oors of the UN Plaza, installing Viega ProPress in approximately 1,700 hotel units.

“I like it. It saved us a lot of time,” Alagna said. “The fact of not having to bring torches, which is big in these buildings, saves you money. You have the safety factor.”

According to Alagna, New York has strict standards concerning welding and torches in structures. Installers who connect pipe with traditional methods of welding and sweating are allowed to bring their welding tanks inside during work hours but when they’ve � nished for the day, the tanks must be removed from the premises. So not only did Viega ProPress save In� nity time in making connections but also because they didn’t have to bother with hauling cumbersome welding tanks in and out of the hotel every day.

“Viega ProPress must have saved us at least 30%,” Alagna said.

In� nity Mechanical was � rst introduced to Viega ProPress through their local Viega sales representative. In� nity had the opportunity to compare Viega ProPress with another press solution that was presented and they chose to go with Viega.

“We presented it to the engineer,” Alagna said. “They liked the idea of having no torches in the hotel.”

Since that time, Alagna stated that he appreciates the help his Viega sales representative has provided for him and the company.

“I had good service too,” Alagna said. “Everyone pitched in. And my suppliers, Victoria and Ideal, did a good job too, making sure we had all the � ttings. Certain � ttings, even strange ones, they got for us right away. Both were very helpful.”

Since completing the Sheraton project, Alagna and In� nity Mechanical have been trying to encourage Viega ProPress in every installation where they are using copper.

“You save a lot of time on labor and you don’t have to worry about tanks in the building and � res,” Alagna said. “It’s a good product.”
