Message from Administration... Happy New Year Springfield Heights Families! January has flown by and it is already February. It has been so nice for our students to have enjoyed the milder weather for a few weeks. And, we have had an excellent month of learning and behaving in kindergarten to grade five. Our staff and students are looking forward to February for our Festival du Voyageur activities and to listen and visit with our special guest readers for I Love to Read month. We’d like to say thank you for joining us before Christmas at our Kindergarten to Grade 3 Concerts. As well, we hope you enjoyed our St. Nicholas assembly. These events already seem so very long ago. However, you need to know that it is always great to have you in the school, and we appreciate your support! If you have a moment, please drop by and visit our beautiful library to see how it is evolving, and check out our entrance and front hallway to see our new furniture additions. Thanks to your wonderful support of our student FIT-A-THON fundraiser two years ago, we were able to buy some new furniture for all students to use in the library and in the hall-ways. This year again, at the end of February students will participate in a Dolphin Dash fit-a-thon with peers in their gym classes. This will be another great opportunity to celebrate Heart Health month and to also raise funds to go towards enriching learning for all of our students. With the funds raised this year, we will look to buying new pinnies for students for gym classes, a washer and dryer for school, amongst other things. Please look for the information and fund raising package that was sent home with your child on Thursday, February 2, 2017. In addition, take a moment to read our PBIS update. We continue to encourage and support students to use wisdom and courage to Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful at Springfield Heights School. Students have the opportunity to receive a golden ticket to recognize their behaviour, and to show their generosity by sharing a ticket with another student who is also making good choices at school. Thank you for taking the time to read the ―Student Safety update in the newsletter on page 10. It includes im-portant safety information that was a part of previous newsletters. We are continuing to encourage driving safely and obeying the rules of the road. This is for the safety of all our children to and from school. We appreciate your support! Thank you for reading our newsletter. We hope you enjoy learning about the engaging and wonderful activities our students took part in, in the last couple of months. Thank you so much for your excellent support this first term. We look forward to our continued partnership as we support our students to learn and grow. Best Wishes from Springfield Staff for a year of peace, health and happiness! Sincerely, Nori Dehn Sherri Black Principal Vice Principal

Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Buddy Bench at SHS We have a brand new tool at SHS to help all students feel included at recess. The buddy bench! The buddy bench is a simple idea to help eliminate loneliness and foster friendships on the playground. If any student at SHS doesn’t have a friend to play with at recess he or she can use the buddy bench. Here are the buddy bench steps:

Look around for someone to play with. If you find someone, ask to join in.

If you can’t find a friend to play with, take a seat and look for someone to meet.

If two kids sit on the bench they can play together.

If you sit on the bench, another student or a peer mediator can invite you to play.

If you see someone on the bench, ask them to play: BE A BENCH WATCHER!

If someone asks you to play, the answer is, “YES!”.

If we all work together we can make sure all students feel welcome at SHS. Have fun using the buddy bench at recess!

Inclusion Committee...

We have had a tremendous start to the new year at SHS. With all of the snow, the building of snow creations and snow play, our PBIS committee, with the help of M. Boyes’ class and Mrs. Sherby’s class, created a Winter Matrix to promote and support safe, responsible and respectful behaviour for all of our students while out on the play-ground during recesses. Staff and students shared and celebrated the new matrix at a school-wide assembly on January 12, 2017 and all of our teachers taught the expec-tations in their classrooms during the month of January. Out on the playground staff continue to recognize and celebrate students who are showing safe, responsible and respectful behaviour by handing out ‘Golden Dolphin Tick-ets’. We continue to recognize and celebrate student be-havior by sharing in ‘Shout Outs’ on the morning an-nouncements.

Recess Soccer at SHS Thank-you to our new Grade 5 Recess Soccer Referees for volunteering their recess time on Days 1, 3 and 5 to set-up the

soccer fields and for refereeing our Grade 1’s to 3’s at recess! They are doing a fantastic job and creating a safe, re-

spectful, responsible and fun way to play soccer for everyone!

Write for Rights Have a Heart Day for First Nations children

Mme Jorgensen’s grade 4 French Immersion class chose to write letters for Canada’s First Nations children. We wrote our letters to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in order to support First Nations children to have the same rights as all other children in Canada receive. The Canadian Charter of Rights states that children have many rights as Canadian citizens. We have been made aware that First Nations children in Canada are not receiving the same rights which we disagree with and want to let the Prime Minister know that we want this to change. We are supporting the campaign entitled, “Have a Heart Day”, by writing letters to support their plea. We all had the same format to respect the campaign letter and for a personal touch added our own message in each letter to reinforce our message. Join us and write for rights for our First Nations children to receive what they rightfully deserve!

Koliada

In the evening, on January 26th, 2017 the students in the Ukrainian program from Springfield Heights School, sang Ukrainian Christmas carols with the students of Chief Peguis School and Bernie Wolfe School. At Chief Peguis School we also danced in our concert. Nicholas B. from grade 5, played on a special Ukrainian instrument, called the tsymbaly. We had a Ukrainian supper before the concert. We came together for Koliada to celebrate Ukrainian Christmas. We felt happy and amazing! It was so fun! -Kindergarten and Grade 1 students from room 8

The Citizenship Celebration

Welcome to Canada! In March, we will have people come to take the oath of citizenship at our school,

and we are creating a celebration booklet for them. The oath is a promise to be respectful and

responsible citizens. This is a special celebration. We are going to welcome the new citizens by giving

them a booklet to share with them what we know and love about Canada. We are so excited to have

this celebration at our school!

The Gift of Giving Mrs. Sherby’s grade 1 & 2 students are learning about generosity. Students were able to show their generosity this Christmas season by showing babies in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) how much they care. To make Christmas more special for babies and families at the NICU (a place for babies who need more time to grow or who are sick at the Children’s and St. Boniface hospital) students made Christmas cards with special messages and fundraised $260.00 to purchase baby blankets for the babies and their families to make them feel loved. With our help we made the babies in the NICU warm and cozy this Christmas season.

Happy New Year!

Thank you to all who

made it out to attend the SHS Winter Concerts

in December and thanks to those who supported

our music program

through the Silver Col-lection. The students

and staff worked very hard to put the show

together and did a fan-

tastic job! Bravo! I hope everyone was rewarded

with a restful winter break.

The grade 5’s in Room 27 and the Kindergartens in Room 5 have been learning about generosity. Together they read the book “Red Parka Mary” by Peter Eyvindson. Stop by the library to see what they have been working on. Here is a sneak peak: Here is what Room 5 and Room 27 do to show generosity without spending money. What can you do? Letting anybody play or have fun with you and letting them into your games. Just being kind and giving of your time and friendship to them no matter who they are. -Delainy from room 27 I help my mommy with laundry and dishes. January Intramurals

January was a busy month for our Grade 4 and 5 students who signed up for the Springfield Heights Floor Hock-ey League! We had so many active participants who demonstrated great sportsmanship by working with peers from various classes. A special thank-you to our student referees who were always committed to showing up and doing their job with pride! Students in Grade 3 had the opportunity to participate in “Spongee Polo” and will continue to do so throughout the next couple of months. It is always great to have so many students excited about getting active and having fun with their classmates! Grade 1 and 2 students enjoyed playing “Swamp Ball” a low organized dodgeball type game that promotes teamwork and fair play. We look forward to continuing Swamp Ball with our younger students in February and March as well. Upcoming clubs and intramurals in February/March include Gymnastics Club for Grade 3’s, Tumbling Rally Club

for Grade 4 and 5’s, and Basketball Club just to name a few! As always, we encourage our students to continue

to come out, get active, and have fun!

Students are invited to the library to create and explore, everyone Tuesday and Thursday during lunch recess. During the month of January, students made dog toys to donate to Manitoba Underdogs Rescue. Manitoba Underdogs Rescue is al-ways looking for donations of Puppy and Dog food, leaches and collars. If you are able to donate, send the supplies to school and we will add them to our donation of toys. February is I Love to Read Month, and the library will be hosting many special guests, including former chief of Police Dev-on Clunis, author-illustrator, Linda Szyszkowski, MLA, Andrew Micklefield, publisher, Carolyn May Szuminski and ventrilo-quist, Dave Dixon.
