Shiatsu Therapy Certificate Program
This non-invasive therapy stimulates the bodys ability to heal itself. Shiatsu is based ontraditional and time honoured healing principles from the East integrated with modernanatomy, physiology and pathology. Helping to restore health and relieve pain by way ofpressure to the bodys energy flows and key acupuncture points, shiatsu is a powerful
approach to health care.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Become a Registered Shiatsu Therapist and have a positive impact on
the lives of others. Langara College's Shiatsu Therapy Certificate
program has been designed to ensure that students are fully prepared
to enter the industry with comprehensive training and professional
experience. Each of our certificate programs are taught by experts in
their fields with extensive knowledge and experience in a wide range
of professional environments.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Become a Registered Shiatsu Therapist in 7 months
Professional training in Japanese Zen Shiatsu, developed by
Master Shizuto Masunaga
Use a unique system of assessing and treating the energetic
imbalances of the body
Combine Eastern and Western understandings of the body and
health
Supervised student clinics provide practical clinical experience
Integrate personal development with professional training
Instruction from highly experienced professionals
SCHEDULE:
September to March (M-F)
745 instructional hours over 23 weeks
30 to 36 hours per week
Additional course in First Aid/CPR is required
All requirements must be completed by April 30

FACULTY
Joe Barnwell M.Ed, RCC, RST
Joe is a Registered Shiatsu Therapist and graduate of
Sourcepoint Shiatsu Centre. He has more than 20 yearsexperience as a clinical counsellor and paddling instructor.
His teaching of shiatsu is enhanced by this work and his
life experience. He has a private practice in shiatsu and
counselling in North Vancouver.
Michael Hamer, RMT
Michael trained and worked as an accountant before
attending massage therapy school. During his twenty-five
years in the health field he has also supported a wide
variety of small businesses, including other health related
professionals through his accounting practice. He is able
to make bookkeeping fun and simple for shiatsu andmassage therapists to integrate into their professional
lives.
David Li Lam, MD, DTCM, RMT
David graduated as a Medical Doctor from the Superior
Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba, and did
post graduate training in Traditional Chinese Medicine
and Acupuncture. He has taught human anatomy,
physiology, and pathology since 1986, and currently has a
private practice in acupuncture and massage therapy in
Richmond.
Armin Madani-Nejad, R.Ac.
Armin is a graduate of the Asian Healing Program at the
Heartwood Institute in California and a Registered
Acupuncturist. He has previously taught Holistic Nutrition
in the program and in his practice at Sourcepoint brings
together acupuncture, shiatsu and nutrition. He is
passionate about making acupuncture accessible to the
public and operates the Heather Community Acupuncture
Clinic.
Kim Pechet, B.A. (Psychology)
Kim has been a professional psychic and meditation
instructor since 1987. In her meditation classes, she usesyoga and guided visualizations to assist participants to
open up to their inner world. Over the years, Kim has
helped thousands of students to develop their sensitivity
and knowledge of the human energy system.
Saul Rosembaum, RST
Saul Rosenbaum graduated from the Professional
Training Program in Shiatsu Therapy at Kikkawa College
in Toronto in 1989. Saul is a practitioner at Sourcepoint
Shiatsu Centre and supervises the student clinic. He also
has a house call service offering treatments in homes,
businesses and on film sets.
Ted Thomas, RST, R.Ac., ABT
Ted is the director of Sourcepoint Shiatsu Centre, and has
been teaching shiatsu since 1986. The creator of the
Shiatsu Therapy Program, he is a Registered
Acupuncturist and a Certified Instructor with the
A.O.B.T.A. (American Organization for Bodywork
therapies of Asia). In his professional practice he
incorporates acupuncture, Shiatsu and corrective exercise.
Guest Instructors
A number of guest instructors will be introduced duringthe program, giving participants the benefit of receiving
information and techniques from different perspectives.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicant must be a high school graduate and with Grade 12 English (or equivalent)
Documentation of a minimum 25 hours of in-class participation in Qigong, Tai Chi, or yoga
Minimum two professional shiatsu treatments

Students must document 40 practice treatments given and 20 received outside of class time as well as a minimum of 2

Graduates have exciting career opportunities, finding placements in various settings including: the growing spa industry;
with other therapists in complementary health care facilities; in offices offering stress management treatments; or in their
own clinics. Our graduates have used their training to work in B.C. and around the world in countries such as Mexico,Belgium, Spain, and Australia.
