ABOUT SHIFT: navigation

We seek navigational aids - devices, processes, artifacts - for Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway. We view navigation as a UTILITY that serves the public, an OPPORTUNITY for visionary approaches to placemaking, and a VENUE for dialogue to transform how our community thinks about design.

To participate, student designers from any discipline will propose solutions for one of two strategically pre-selected sites along the greenway. Winners will be chosen by a jury of local and global experts in greenway design, public art, and community engagement. In addition to cash prizes for the top two navigational aids, SHIFT: navigation will work with the designers of the two winning entries to fabricate these solutions in whatever ways the design requires, and then share them with decision makers throughout our city. Finally, we will recognize the top eight submissions by installing their competition boards in strategic spaces throughout Raleigh, publicizing their designs in a digital manuscript and hosting it online, and featuring their work at a gallery show in downtown Raleigh.

Beyond simply soliciting good ideas, then, SHIFT: navigation channels great ideas to audiences who can make them tangible.

ABOUT SHIFT

Created in 2011, SHIFT: is operated by the North Carolina State University SASLA chapter. Through SHIFT: we seek to engage students from around the world in topics that are both critical and underrepresented in our community. Past projects amassed scholarly articles on :infrastructure and :process, and published them in an ASLA award-winning journal.

In 2015, we are looking towards Raleigh’s future, while taking cues from SHIFT:’s past. SHIFT: navigationblends its predecessors celebrations of public networks and community engagement, transitioning them from the realm of journals and academia and crystallizing them into more tangible interventions in Raleigh’s built and digital landscapes.

OBJECTIVE

Greenways are infrastructure that serve the public. From reversing obesity to promoting mental health, from curbing greenhouse gas emissions to improving water quality, bicycle and pedestrian activity benefits our health and our ecosystems. The Capital Area Greenway lays the foundation for a culture of active living and transit, but despite its 112 miles of greenway, Raleigh does not rank among America’s top 50 most bike friendly cities.

SHIFT: navigation is about greenway legibility, promoting strategies that make it easier for Raleigh’s exploding population to get out of their cars and onto our greenway. We are targeting sites that are located between existing or emergent intra-city corridors and are insufficiently legible for potential users. By helping decipher these strategic areas SHIFT: navigation strives to maximize its public benefit.

Greenways tell a community’s story. The same solutions that promote legibility in Raleigh’s bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure can also testify to the past, present, and shining future of our city. By crafting compelling narratives, navigational aids can empower citizens to consider what their greenway, environment, and city mean.

SHIFT: navigation is about legibility, but it is also about visionary placemaking strategies. Navigation is a powerful narrative device because it can weave the strands of our identity into a coherent and resonant story, and then repeatedly place that story throughout the physical and digital landscape. By soliciting ideas from a trans-disciplinary pool of thinkers, SHIFT: navigationmanifests the most innovative placemaking approaches.

Design sparks conversation. The impact of these conversations can echo throughout the community well beyond the ideological, physical, and temporal scope of the projects that stimulated them.

SHIFT: navigation is about implementing tangible improvements to the Capital Area Greenway, but it is also about community dialogue through and about design. SHIFT: navigation is committed to instigating conversations and forging relationships that build the city’s capacity to talk and think more broadly about design’s role in Raleigh’s future.

WINNING ENTRIES WILL HELP INSTIGATE, SHAPE, AND SUSTAIN CONVERSATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS.

The intervention functions with minimal maintenance and is financially viable at a citywide scale.

The intervention simultaneously and effectively communicates both the wayfinding and placemaking elements of navigation.

The intervention facilitates enhanced wayfinding in approachable and contextually sensitive ways.

In 1972, Crabtree Valley Mall opened on the frontier of the suburbs just north of downtown Raleigh and along the banks of Crabtree Creek. Today, the infrastructure around this standard suburban mall maintains its mid-century autocentricity, but many of the neighborhoods along the creek are slowly transitioning, from families in tract ranch houses to professionals in mixed use condos. Those more affluent neighborhoods that are still low-density and single-family are peppered with large stands of Southeastern mixed forests that span out from nearby Umstead State Park. Traveling a few short miles on the Crabtree Creek Trail (CCT) is like following a transect along these cultural trends and ecological backdrops.

While still distinctly suburban in land use pattern and infrastructure allocation, recent events indicate that things around the Crabtree Creek Trail—and more broadly, in North Raleigh—are changing. Like the neighborhoods surrounding North Hills Mall, its neighbor in commerce to the east, the Crabtree Valley area is increasingly transitioning to higher density development patterns. Situated between Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the Research Triangle Park, and Raleigh’s rapidly blossoming downtown, parts of this area are being settled by a younger, affluent, and extremely autocentric demographic.

Dorthea Dix Psychiatric Hospital moved its last patients to newer facilities in August of 2012, but the carving up of its massive grounds began long before that. In 1984, then-Governor James Hunt allocated 385 acres from the Dix property to North Carolina State University, That land formed the foundation of Centennial Campus, a massive undertaking that links university research to professional applications in various fields. The now-1334 acre campus is anticipated to offer 9 million sq. ft. of constructed space, most of which will be occupied by organizations that collaborate with faculty, employ students, or provide permanent work in high-tech innovation industries.

Perhaps the most fitting embodiment of the Centennial Campus’ mission is the James Hunt Library. Designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snohetta, Hunt Library is named after the governor who not only helped provide the land that the building sits on, but also whose prescient vision helped inspire the design of a world-class building to give a competitive advantage to the students and workers of North Carolina. Echoing the learning and working environments and relationships elsewhere on Centennial Campus, the library is designed so that its spaces facilitate collaborative use of cutting-edge technology to solve problems in creative, innovative ways.
