TECH FORESIGHTABOUT US

At Imperial Tech Foresight we allow business leaders to immerse themselves in the fringes of disruption, exploring breakthrough technology and research through visionary academic perspectives. We connect corporate partners with challenging, proactive and engaging visions of the future.

For us, foresight is a process of identifing changes in the world and thinking strategically about how we might respond to these changes. We work with the idea that the world is not deterministic and instead help leverage alternative futures. Strategic foresight uses a multi-disciplinary perspective on how the future might unfold to systematically inform today’s decision making. The purpose is not to predict the future, but to better understand the elements and changes that might contribute to how the future will develop. We help create a broad perspective on the possible, probable, and plausible futures emerging.

Are you curious, afraid or just interested in the future? Get in touch - [email protected]

Welcome to 2038, where things are not always what they seem and technological breakthroughs could change the very fundamentals of how we engage with and see the world.

There is a current hype around data. How might we unlock the power of data through the use of computational statistics?

Professor Mark Girolami’s talk will explore his vision of how data might impact the way see and practice engineering through the use of computational statistics.

He has worked across industries to identify and harness value in often complex, uncertain and data-rich areas. During the talk we will hear his vision of how cities might go from static objects to responsive beta structures.

CREATING VALUE BY QUANTIFYING UNCERTAINTY

PROFESSOR MARK GIROLAMICHAIR IN STATISTICS AND DIRECTOR OF THE ALAN TURING INSTITUTE

Professor Girolami FRSE is Chair of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. He holds the Royal Academy of Engineering / Lloyd’s Register Foundation Research Chair in Data-Centric Engineering and is one of the Strategic Programme Directors at the Alan Turing Institute.

He works at the interdisciplinary edge of mathematics, statistics, computing and engineering to create statistical applications that deliver value from complex data across industries as diverse as the life sciences, engineering, and chemistry with partnerships that including the likes of Amazon, Shell, and Lloyd’s Register.

11:15 - 12:00

What if we could harness and control the power of light? What happens when we can sense light at the nano-scale?

This talk will delve into Dr Riccardo Sapienza’s work on how to control light at the nanoscale by using hyper-uniform disorder material. Trapping light can have many benefits and applications spanning a multitude of industries. We will be taken on a journey of how our interaction with light and lasers might be completely different in 20 years from molecular quantum computing to bio-sensing.

Dr Sapienza and his Complex Nanophotonics Research Group are currently working on nano-antennas, random lasers, and new materials. The potential applications are broad, from photonic circuits for faster information processing, biointegrated sensors to sense our health, and hyper-sensitive devices.

DR RICCARDO SAPIENZAREADER IN PHYSICS, FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCES

Dr Riccardo Sapienza leads the Complex Nanophotonic Laboratory at Imperial College London, where he works on the study of light at the nano-scale and in complex materials, and the effects of wave interference in light propagation and generation.

Today, data is deemed necessary to power many of our online experiences. Over the years, internet companies have easily exchanged personal information in order to power their services and experiences. However, a shift in the market due to regulatory changes and consumer demands are disrupting this previously readily-accessed information.

What might individual privacy mean in 2038?

Data is set to become this century’s most valuable asset, yet there are no standards or platforms which allow data be traded efficiently. This is stifling economic growth, social progress and innovation - turning data into a liquid asset remains one of the key challenges of our digital age. The DX Network provides the technical infrastructure to power open data marketplaces. By leveraging blockchain technology (Ethereum), it allows organisations to buy and sell structured data from each other securely and in real-time.

With over 3.03 billion social media users world-wide, social technologies have brought speed and scale to social interactions; yet feelings of loneliness and depression are on the rise. Eleos is a robotic physical social media platform designed to help young people who face feelings of social isolation by facilitating emotion sharing and encouraging physical interactions at parties and performances through a combination of passive movement, active flight and haptic response.

The widespread applications in Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and IoT inspire new solutions towards feeding our future society. One of the main challenges in the food industry is the disconnect between producers and consumers. A collective lack of awareness of where our food is sourced, results in unconscious consumer behaviour negatively impacting our environment. How do we feed the cities of the future? How are future technologies allowing us to cross industry silos at multiple intervention points to drive change?

Searching for oil and gas involves huge amounts of data. Interpreting these datasets is labour-intensive, prone to human error, and expensive. Conventional methods are failing geologists, geophysicists and engineers who need to make crucial business decisions in the exploration and development of fields. We use state of the art computer vision and machine learning methods that allow new insights into oil and gas datasets. Our proprietary software can increase efficiency and quantify uncertainty when analysing oil and gas data.
