Staff in the cath lab say he is the model of efficiency and has great respect for his patients and their families. He always treats them with dignity and keeps the family updated on progress during their procedures. Many patients even request his services on return visits. Co-worker Melissa Boes added, “Paul is always very respectful and courteous to patients, families and co-workers. He can be my family member’s nurse any time. He is an excellent nurse.” When asked about his nomination, Paul said, “It’s a privilege and an honor to receive the respect star, as I try to live by and follow the golden rule.” Paul Mazur, RN, Cath lab nurse Respect Access According to Jenny Tillman, RN, director of ambulatory services, “Dr. Chan provides excellent follow through” and “radiates a positive attitude.” A second-year resident in the department of surgery, he knows what it means to provide access to our patients. He consistently goes above and beyond and makes himself available to staff and patients in a timely manner, ensuring patients’ needs are met. Dr. Chan says, “As health-care providers, we are expected to provide quality care to our patients. To receive this positive recognition is encouraging and only makes me want to strive to work harder to meet those needs.” Cyrus Chan, M.D., Department of Surgery Natalie Tomasi, Neurosurgery clinic scheduler Natalie recently went out of her way to ensure an elderly patient was notified of a scheduling change, even coordinating with family members to make certain transportation was available. When asked how she felt about being nominated, Natalie’s first thoughts were, “I don’t do it alone. I have the support of the physicians and clinic staff. We work as a team. I feel that this recognition highlights the efforts of the entire surgery clinic.” Her supervisor, and nominator, Jenny Tillman, RN, director of ambulatory services, says, “Natalie goes above and beyond to always assure the patient and family fully understand instructions, and she is sensitive to the patient’s needs.” Communication Shining Star Award November 2010 The iCare Shining Star Award recognizes UT Medical Center and UTP faculty, staff and/or students for their outstanding contributions that exemplify and support the mission of UTMC and the principles of the iCARE program. Linda Salazar, Environmental Services Excellence Dr. Marijo Tamburrino, chair of psychiatry, says, “Linda exceeds expectations every day. I completely trust her with patient confidentiality and anything in my office.” And if you ask any of her other four nominators, they’ll tell you the department of psychiatry has never had a better housekeeping employee. It’s the little things that Linda does above and beyond her daily duties, like cleaning the waiting room chairs and office doors, which earned their praises. Ms. Salazar stated, “I am overwhelmed and very excited. I just couldn’t believe it. I love my work, I really enjoy it. So winning something like this makes me feel really good. ”
