Times They are a Changin’
TECHNICAL SUPERIORITY, THE DISCOVERY OF THE ADVANTAGES OF SPECIALISATION IN DESIGN, AND THE EXTENSIVE EXPLOITATION OF THAT DISCOVERY GAVE THE DUTCHdomination of the European shipbuilding industry by the beginning of the seventeenth century. The shipbuilding industry was one of the cornerstones of the economic prosperity of the golden century. Dutch shipbuilders dominated the European market, selling their products to buyers from Riga in the Baltic to Venice in the Adriatic. The success of the industry was based on the technical superiority of its product. Dutch shipbuilders used more efficient building methods and produced ships of better design than their European rivals. However, the times they are a changin’. Last year for instance was a challenging year for the Dutch shipbuilding industry to maintain a competitive position in global market.
Speaking about maintaining a competitive position, at Yellow & Finch Publishers we have ambitious plans. Earlier this year the complete restyling of this magazine was very positively received by the market and has helped grow the magazine’s international reputation. In addition, we launched a dedicated Publishing & Promotions Service this year, offering strong marketing products to the maritime industry.
Last but not least, we have strengthened our management team by appointing Charles van den Oosterkamp as the new helmsman with Yellow & Finch. As CEO he will spearhead and increase the focus on commercial activity across the whole of Yellow & Finch and will oversee the development of new business products to support the maritime industry. Charles’ considerable management and commercial experience will be invaluable to us as we look to continue the growth of our business into new and exciting areas. We have already experienced major growth in the past few years and we are confident that his appointment will see this continue. Charles will be responsible for driving the business, adding additional vigour to the operational and performance management of Yellow & Finch’s activities worldwide. Focusing on the core assets of the publishing and promotion divisions, Charles’ key roles will centre on developing and maintaining the company’s upward growth curve, ensuring that Yellow & Finch continues to deliver exceptional service and knowledge transfer to the highest standards.

Jan De Nul’s Cutter Suction Dredger Marco Polo at work on the Panama Canal Expansion Program last year. By July this year, the project reached 60.4 percent completion. Driven by the arrival of new generation containerships, the canal expansion has also provided an impulse for ports to dredge deeper berths. In this issue of SBI, we look at technology solutions for the vessels undertaking these global infrastructure and port development projects. Read more starting on pg 32. Taking a closer look at dredging, this issue of ShipBuilding Industry digs deeper into global hydraulic engineering infrastructure. To see for myself the latest vessels driving the sector – after recently taking on the role of CEO at Yellow & Finch Publishers – I headed to Kinderdijk, the Netherlands. IHC Merwede kindly invited me to attend the launch of the 5,500m³ TSHD DCI Dredge XXI. The naming ceremony was performed by Mrs R Mohanty, the spouse of Dredging Corporation of India Chairman and Managing Director Captain DK Mohanty.
Speaking with the Managing Director of IHC Merwede’s Dredging division Bram Roelse at the event, I not only outlined my new responsibilities in leading the team behind this magazine, but also congratulated him on his own recent appointment as COO and member of the Board of Management at IHC Merwede. The announcement came together with the news that, as of 1 September 2013, Dirk Philips succeeds Govert Hamers as the new CEO of IHC Merwede. Mr Philips joins at a busy time – the company’s offshore division alone secured orders worth over EUR 1 billion this summer.
Mr Hamers joins the company’s Supervisory Board and remains at the heart of European shipbuilding as the new Chairman of the European Ships & Maritime Equipment Association (SEA Europe), where he succeeds Lars Gørvell-Dahll in
October. SEA Europe was jointly founded in Brussels last year by European shipbuilders, ship repairers and maritime suppliers – representing an industry that generates EUR 72 billion in annual turnover and employs 500,000 European workers.
I believe a strong maritime media business also plays an important part in developing this industry. Earlier this year ShipBuilding Industry’s brand new look and feel was very positively received by the market and has helped grow the magazine’s international reputation. In addition, Yellow & Finch Publishers launched its Publishing & Promotions service this year, winning several important contracts including the official Europort 2013 exhibition catalogue.
Together with co-founder Dennis Vinkoert, who remains Publisher and Executive Editor
of ShipBuilding Industry, our CCO Marco Geels and the rest of our team, I hope to meet you either in the months to come or of course at the Rotterdam show in November.
