    Yasuni Biosphere ReserveThe privileged location of the Yasuni between: the

    Andes, the Western Amazon Basin and the Equatormake the Ecuadors most interesting wilderness forMankind: the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve; home of theextraordinary biodiversity and a recently contactedAmazonian indigenous group known as the Huaorani;

    relatives of the Waoranis, the Tagaeri and Taromenane,still live in voluntary isolation deep in the reserve.

    The Yasun Biosphere Reserve also sits atop large re-serves of crude oil, Ecuadors chief export, and con-tains an abundance of valuable timber species. Thisvolatile combination has led to intense con icts, andsubsequently, increased international interest and con-cern.

    In 1989, the area in and around the original limits of Yasuni National Park was designated as a Man andthe Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (United NationsEducational, Scienti c and Cultural Organization).The Yasuni Biosphere Reserve. Now covers 16 820km2, including a 5000 km2 core area. According toUNESCO documents, this core area is centered on theYasuni and Nushio Rivers in the northeast section of the park. The rest of the reserve (a 7000 km2 buffer

    zone and a 4820 km2 transition zone) includes muchof the remaining park area and the adjacent WaoraniEthnic Reserve.

    The Yasuni Biosphere Reserve is the core of a small,unique area where South Americas plant, amphib-ian, bird, and mammal species richness centers over-lap. Furthermore, the reserve is located within theCore Amazon, an especially wet region to maintainwet, rainforest conditions as climate change-induceddrought intensi es in the Eastern Amazon. Haffer(1969, 1997) postulated that the area in and aroundthe Yasuni Biosphere Reserve was one of severalAmazonian forest refugia during dry climatic periodsover the past 65 million years, but this hypothesis hasnow largely been rejected (Mayle et al 2004, Maslinet al 2005).

    The Waorani People

    The Waorani are Amerindians from the AmazonianRegion of Ecuador (Napo, Orellana and Pastaza Prov-inces) who have marked differences from other ethnicgroups from Ecuador. The entire Yasuni BiosphereReserve region is ancestral Waorani territory, which

    extends from the Napo River on the northand west, down to the Curaray River in the south

    and eastward into Peru. This vast territory, whichstretches over 20 000 km2, underlies the current lim-its of Yasuni National Park and the Waorani EthnicReserve

    Information on Waorani history and distributionprior to the twentieth century is scarce and specula-tive The Waorani were traditionally a highly mobile,semi-nomadic population of hunter-gatherer horti-culturalists. They lived in four warring and widelydispersed groups located on hilltops away from ma-

    jor rivers; the headwaters of the Tiputini River con-stituted the core of ancestral Waorani territory. Otherindigenous groups, mainly the Zaparos, lived alongthe Tiputini and Curaray rivers in essence surround-ing the Waorani. When the Zaparos were suddenlydecimated by disease and violent displacement dur-ing the rubber boom that hit the region in the late1800s, the Waorani were able to expand their ter-ritory northward to the Napo and southward to theUpper Curaray and Villano rivers. Waorani territorylikely reached its greatest extent at the beginning of 20th century.

    At least two lines of evidence suggest that the Waora-ni were quite isolated, even from other indigenousgroups in the area, for a long time:1. - Their language, Wao Terero, is an isolated one

    without known congeners and with only two knowncognates at the time of missionary contact in the late1950s Wao Terero is considered unique in linguisticconstruction, with no known similarities with Zap-aroan phonology or structure.2. - The genetic homogeneity of The Waorani alsopoints to a lengthy isolation of their population.

    During modern history, there were four major peri-ods of early contact between the Waorani whichtranslates to the people or true human beings inWao Terero and outsiders encroaching on their ter-ritory:1. - The rubber boom in the late 1800s/early 1900s,2. - Early oil exploration in the 1940s,

    3. - Missionary work starting in the 1950s, and4. - The oil boom starting in the 1970s.
