THE FLOATING MALL

The fall semester graduate design studio at RISD called “ Metropolitan Hybrids” looked at the Adaptive Reuse of the Middlesex County Jail house and courtroom building.

The aim was to propose a new program which benefited the urban fabric along with the building itself, saving it from being demolished.

My design proposal looked at creating a Consumer Core which would house different levels of Consumer driven facilities in the same building envelope. Integrating Luxury Retail, a daily needs Supermarket & Big Box retail with a high end Hotel facility and rentable micro luxury Apartments was explored.

INSTALLATION DESIGN

The studio focused on adaptive reuse in the city of Newport, RI through the support of the Van Beuren Charitable Foundation. The site for the project is the Newport Congregational Church. Built in 1857, the NCC significance lies with the interior and the work of American artists, John La Farge. La Farge was commissioned to execute a mural and stained glass decorative program with the church’s expansive sanctuary. The Installation aimed at exploring ‘Soft Intervention’ and using fabric,& wood created a tribute to the great work in the space without any permanent intervention. The Design Build studio started from design conception, construction drawings to the final building of the installation itself.

UNION IN FAITH, UNION WITH FAITH

This proposal looks at bringing the church back to the community by maintaining the Congregational practice that exists today. As a new program, the unique space decorated with Lafarge has the potential to become a popular destination Wedding Venue. The combination of these two as a reuse proposal for the Newport Congregational Church aim to preserve and revive its sacred soul in today’s modern context. It is said that a space is made by its detail hence the design concept is minimum intervention and maximum function. Architecturally, the Adaptive Reuse approach of ‘Soft Intervention’tries to propose subtle changes in the main church and maximum change in the Parish Hall... “In discovering these subtle interventions through the space the church might reveal something that you did not know existed. ... “

This studio looked at understading the conceptual aspects of design to study its full potential & possible application in space. The aim of the design excercise was to explore the text of the poem and understand its meaning. Translation of one medium of expression to another was the primary goal.

.. “The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,But I have promises to keep,And miles to go before I sleep,And miles to go before I sleep.”

-Robert Frost

The essence of the poem was broken down to be able to design a physical space possesing the same original essence. In this project, the idea of serentity of the forest and its calming quality was captured. The transitional nature of the poem was used to design a subway which is very mundane in its function but tries to capture the calming sensation of water as a surprise to the user. The visual & audio quality of water would provide solace to the user just as the snowy woods gave relief to the poet.

SHAKESPEARE THEME BOUTIQUE HOTELConcept Design, Construction drawingsSkating Rink, Mussoorie, IndiaJasbir Sawhney Associates| 2010

The project looked at the reuse of a historic Skating Rink in the heart of Mussoorie as a luxury boutique hotel. As a playful rendition to the new use, the Boutique hotel was proposed to be based on Shakespeare’s plays. Each room was thus a blank cancvas to convey hints and clues of one great play. The hotel itself aimed at reviving the city center and promoting tourism in the area. I had the opportunity to be part of the design team involved with the conception of this new use. Early association with the project allowed me to gain experience in concept models, working drawings, client meetings, tendering and the construction process itselfw. A detail study of materials, furniture design and fabrics was also conducted to assist the interior design details.
