Bertoni Gallery has a wide variety of artistic talent. Two watercolor artists are both inspired by nature but the outcomes are very different. Seema Goldstein began her art career at Fashion Institute of Technology where her creativity led her to a variety of artistic endeavors. She attended art classes at Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and Catskills Art Society. Seema also studied privately with Ellen Hoyt and other prominent instructors. She is a member of Northeast Watercolor Society and National Art League. She now resides in Monticello where she has an art studio. Seema’s work is very loose, light and whimsical. There is a piece for almost everyone.

In contrast, Mae Bertoni’s watercolors are very realistic, detail oriented and usually very deep in color. She tries to capture the beauty and essence of nature in the raw. Mae is a well-established award winning painter with quite an extensive resume. Featured in magazines and NY Life calendars for many years, her work is also part of corporate and private collections throughout the United States. Mae Bertoni has been listed in several publications such as Who’s Who in America and 2000 Outstanding Women of the 20th Century. Her watercolors amaze most people that think they are photographs.

There are also two stitchery artists that work in mostly recycled goods but with very different approaches and materials. Diane Woznicki is a self-taught artist that creates for home, garden, adornment, aromatherapy and

sensual pleasure. Her balsam creations started as a way of recycling her Christmas tree. Her sachets are now filled with her dried balsam needles. She embellishes

them with embroidery and beading. Her “stitch therapy” has evolved into new pieces created from her and her husband Arno’s original art printed on fabric. Her work is a creative, med-itative and healing process that she hopes will inspire and bring pleasure.

The other crafter is Mary Bono of SnoozeCrafts who has been sewing and crocheting for years. Her vintage buttons

came first from family tins and jars. When she started making bracelets, she discovered thousands more on eBay. The variety of design still amazes her-- it’s endless. Each brace-let starts with a crocheted cuff of elastic thread. The fun and challenge is choosing buttons that work together, in compo-sition and color. Once they’re sewn on, a second cuff is fitted inside and joined.

These artists are just a few of the 40 or more artists that

exhibit on a regular basis at Bertoni Gallery, 50 Main Street, Warwick, New York. Truly they work so dili-gently at their craft you can’t imagine the hours that go into each and every piece. A true labor of love.

The next featured group show is the annual Juried Small Works exhi-bition that will be up from September 14 – December 29, 2019. Gallery

hours are Wednesday – Sunday 11-6. The reception will be on September 14 from 5-7 when you can meet and greet the artists. Come join us for light refreshments and music. All are welcome.

If you’ve noticed a revival of all things retro (think record players, hanging macramé plant holders and Eames chairs) you’re not alone. There’s a decidedly modern, yet back to basics movement taking hold of rental houses

and the social media platforms that promote them. Images of fireside lounging, alfresco farm-to-table feasts and Swedish hot tubs hold court with mid-century modern A-frames, sweeping lake vistas and cozy reading nooks.

Perhaps it’s backlash from a tech-intensive world, but the modern traveler, under the guise of “going off the grid,” has upped the ante for guest experience. While there’s no official algorithm, the elements that make for an epic getaway are seemingly simple to the untrained eye. But, dig deeper and you’ll find a carefully curated experience with edited elements like hand selected books, vintage board games, artwork, salvaged treasures, fine furnishings and possibly a touch of Target and IKEA that all sing together in a wonder-ful cacophony of kitsch.

Maybe it’s a result of the demographic shift sweeping “Upstate.” Weekend warriors seeking solace from the city have infiltrated in ways that are still seeping in and working their magic. The Catskills has seen ex-staffers from icons like Vogue and W Magazine trade their Brooklyn lofts for farmhouse digs, celebrity chefs open pop up eateries and Instagram influencers given free reign of social media take-overs in the mountains.

Here in Greenwood Lake, Broadway actors, hedge fund managers, and captains of industry comingle with an influx of

Airbnb property owners and guests that are organically pro-moting the area. Suddenly #greenwoodlake has over 22,300 posts and #lakelife has become a mantra.

What does all this mean for the market? For one, the real estate and short-term rental game is in the midst of a mas-sive paradigm shift. What began as a simple idea of renting a spare bedroom for a little extra cash has morphed into a multi-billion dollar industry. Gone are the days of vacation rentals requiring guests to bring their own basics like sheets, towels and toiletries. This new wave of weekenders want all the luxuries of home while they’re away living their best life. And oh, they also want expertly designed spaces, picture perfect landscapes, and a welcome gift of local provisions to spark a sense of place. If all that seems overwhelming for owners (on top of managing online listings, booking calen-dars, guest communication, property maintenance and social media accounts for the house) . . .well, it is.

That’s where the business model for Upstate Outpost was born. Part property management, part hospitality, with a good dose of design background, Upstate Outpost offers short-term rental support to help homeowners navigate the waters of Airbnb and manage their homes like the boutique hotels they are. From marketing to messaging, to managing booking calendars and housekeeping flips, Upstate Outpost has carved a unique niche. —Lisa Mulcahy, Owner

THE LANDMARK INN

Culinary Legends of Ghosts and Gravy

A HISTORY OF OLD INNS AND RESTAURANTS THROUGHOUT THE HUDSON VALLEY

Landmark Inn in 1954

M any years ago when the kitchen was the heart of the home, and old inns and

restaurants were the heart of a town, story telling was the heart of enter-tainment. Good food and spellbinding stories were a combination that satis-fied both appetites, and imaginations. Many of these were ghost stories.

Along dirt roads and beyond the edge of the woods that skirt the modern roads of today, there still exist century-old buildings that continue to speak to us. Join us every issue as we visit old inns and restaurants where the secrets of history and pantry are shared with us. Historical accounts and recipes combine to bring you a glimpse of a time gone by, but not forgotten.

As you travel on Rt. 94 between Warwick and Florida, it is like stepping back in time. Homesteads that date back over 100 years dot the country-side. The Landmark Inn still watches over the road where stagecoaches and travelers compassed their way home by its structure.

Generations of a family named Sly, farmed, lived, and made history on its beautiful acres. In an article that dates back to 1889 in the Warwick Advertiser, papers were found among Sly family descen-dants showing that the old farm had been in the family since the

Revolutionary War. Conrad Sly, who purchased the farm, was a blacksmith who helped create the chain that stretched across the Hudson to stop the British during the Revolutionary War. His original blacksmith’s shop was across the road from where the Landmark stands today. According to a book written in 1904, “History, Sly Family”, Conrad came over from Bavaria with five brothers. Conrad and his family first occupied a log home near a spring on the property that had been used originally by Native American Indians. Conrad once wrote “that they found ruins of an Indian hut when they first moved there.”

Rolling fields that wave with wheat lean against the horizon behind the old inn. In this peaceful setting, a Sly family member that passed on many years ago has been glimpsed on occasion. Michael DiMartino, the Landmark’s owner, culinary graduate, and premier chef, has mentioned candles have been seen lighting themselves. A customer once told him, that upon driving past the inn very late at night, he almost drove off the road, when his attention

was drawn to a woman in a long dress with long hair, standing in the window holding a candle, staring out into the night. Others have reported seeing an apparition of what appears to be the same woman. A waitress reported seeing the woman’s reflec-tion behind her in a mirror.

It is believed the ghost is that of “Great Aunt Hanna”, who was tre-mendously opposed to alcohol con-sumption. There was a great amount of paranormal activity in the 50’s and 60’s when the bar was extremely active. Glasses were witnessed being heaved against the walls, and plates suddenly found their way to the floor without encouragement of human hands.

Come and join Michael DiMartino at the Landmark Inn and taste incred-ible culinary creations. Enjoy the rich and rustic atmosphere where the old windows glance across the same land-scape unaltered for hundreds of years.

Sip some of the best wines in the region…and hope that Aunt Hanna has mellowed as much as the wine!
