Holiday gifts for fitness enthusiastsIt is the most wonderful

time of the year. Holidaywish lists are full of gift ideasbig and small, outrageous andpractical.

Afraid you couldn’t top lastyear’s gifts? Check out thislist for the year’s hottest itemsfor every kind of fitness en-thusiast in your life.

Strength trainers• Get a grip! The most

overlooked aspect ofstrength training is gripstrength. One’s grip canbe the missing piece tobeing as strong as possi-ble. Fat Gripz or Captainof Crush are two greatways to incorporate griptraining and hit all newpersonal strength recordsthis year.• Stuck and constricted by

your department storepants? If you train hardand struggle to find cloth-ing that fits your athleticbuild and active lifestyle, check out brands like Bar-bell Apparel and Kuhlclothing. Move well andlook great!• Increasing fitness in-

volves more than pushingadditional weight or tak-ing less breaks. Move-ment efficiency is criticalto maximizing fitness po-tential. Schedule a move-ment assessment andlearn where efficiency

may be lost. Look for afitness professional offer-ing a comprehensive test-ing protocol such as theFunctional MovementScreen.

Die-hard cardio exercisers• You know those people.

Some call them crazy forexercising outside beforethe sun is up or runningduring a snowstorm. Forthe early bird exerciser inyour life, make sure theyare safe on the road withthe latest safety gear. Re-flective vests for runnerssuch as Amphipod orNathan, or a bike-mounted car radar fromGarmin make all youroutdoor activities as safeas possible.• Nothing shows how die-

hard a fitness enthusiast islike a new pair of sun-glasses. For those thattend to sweat a lot, brandslike ROKA provide com-fort and confidence withtheir non-slip technology. For more fashion-flare,check out POC or 100%.For unrelenting perform-ance, Oakley sunglassesare tough to beat. • Nothing says “I support

you” like being one stepahead of your loved one.Purchasing or promising arace registration showshow much you care about

their passion for healthand fitness. Registrationscan range from more“tame” events such as5k’s and half marathons,to regional adventureevents like Tough Mud-ders and Spartan races, tointernational events suchas the Haute Route.

Outdoors enthusiast• A great way to track your

travels and reflect on fondmemories is with a postersized map. These mapsallow travelers to scratchoff or pin all the greatplaces they have ex-plored. Maps range fromstate parks to internationaltravels. This is a must-have piece of interactiveart for lovers of the out-doors.• Enjoy hiking but ready to

take the next step? Poleswill take you there. Giv-ing additional support will

make for a more stableand confident march.Staying on level ground?Walking with poles canburn significantly moreenergy. No matter whereyou roam, hiking polesmake it better!• So you have found the

perfect scenery, but havenowhere to sit. For any-one who thrives outdoors, consider gifting a col-lapsible chair. A brandlike Helinox is a popularbrand, with some optionsweighing in at barely over1 pound. These tote-any-where chairs are perfectfor travel, adventure, andleisure.

No matter what type of fit-ness enthusiast is on your list, this year you are sure to findthe perfect gift. Pick the gift, wrap it up, and watch theirface light up with gratitude.

From the Howard Suamico School District Board

HSSD graduate profileThe Howard-Suamico

School District (HSSD) vi-sion is an authentic, innova-tive, connected, and inspiredexperience for an ever-chang-ing future. In order to achievethis vision for our students,HSSD Graduate Profile hasbeen developed to includeseven characteristics that areat the center of learning in ourschools and community.Graduate Profile characteris-tics are critical skills for en-gaged citizenship, successfulcareer paths, and meaningfulcommunity involvement.Graduate Profile characteris-tics include self-starter, criti-cal thinker, collaborator, communicator, adaptable, re-sponsible, and solutionist.Rigorous academic standardspresent daily opportunities forstudents to demonstrate pro-file characteristics in ourclassrooms. Foundational ac-ademic skills learned andmeasured alongside the grad-uate profile characteristics ac-centuate a whole- studentexperience in HSSD.

Throughout the year, theBoard of Education monitorsstudent performance in HSSDGraduate Profile seven char-acteristics. At the October 21Board meeting, we talkedwith teachers from multiplegrade levels and observedmathematics lessons in actionwith students developing crit-ical thinker and solutionistskills. Critical thinkers inves-tigate, analyze, and evaluatethe quality of ideas and howthey are connected. We sawexamples of our students as

mathematics learners becom-ing critical thinkers by usinginquiry, seeking multiple per-spectives, organizing infor-mation in meaningful ways, reasoning and making logicalconclusions, and reflecting ontheir own ideas and those ofothers. Solutionists solveproblems. We also saw stu-dents becoming solutionistsby deepening understanding, identifying and articulatingproblems, thinking of creativesolutions, and choosing andconstructing solutions. At theNovember 18 Board meeting,we met with teachers and lit-eracy coaches and observedliteracy lessons in action withstudents growing as commu-nicators. Students practice lis-tening to others, askingclarifying questions, andgaining information and un-derstanding. Students writeand speak, growing in articu-lating ideas clearly and effec-tively, and choosing

appropriate communicationtools. Students practice en-gaging in conversations withflexible and open minds, demonstrate empathy, and un-derstand how their words andactions affect others.

To provide rich learning op-portunities, instructionalpractices are now emphasiz-ing performance tasks so thatstudents can grow and learnthese seven characteristics.Seeing our students intention-ally developing HSSD Grad-uate Profile characteristics isexciting and rewarding be-cause we know they are beingprepared to thrive in our com-plex and rapidly changingworld. Shoveling Snow & Lower Back PainNow that winter is upon us, driveways, sidewalks and pathways will need to be cleared of snow.

During this time of year, improper snow shoveling continues to be one of the most common

causes of lower back pain. Here are some simple tips to protect your back and prevent pain:

• Warm up thoroughly prior to shoveling (brisk walk, stretch)

• Use a light, plastic bladed shovel with proper handle length for you

• Bend at your hips and knees and not your low back when lifting

• Keep the heaviest portion of the shovel close to your body

• Keep loads light and take your time, take a break if needed

• Avoid twisting and throwing heavy snow

Roots Chiropractic utilizingnew cutting-edge technology

Getting to the root cause ofyour family’s health chal-lenges is what Dr. BrianHuisheere does best. RootsChiropractic is now utilizingnew neurological scanningtechnology to analyze exactlywhere stress and dysfunctionis within your system, andhow it causes your aches, pains, and so much more.Roots Chiropractic is one ofthe only practices in North-east Wisconsin with this ad-vanced technology available.

The cutting-edge technol-ogy consists of three separateneurological scans; HeartRate Variability (HRV), Ther-mography (Thermal), Elec-tromyography (EMG). Eachof these scans measure vitalaspects of your health andneurology. This allows Dr.Huisheere to uncover theexact areas with your spineand nervous that need to beaddressed. The scanning tech-nology is safe and non-inva-sive for all ages andthroughout pregnancy.

We live our entire livesthrough our nervous system.Every movement, sensation, emotion, and organ functionare under guidance of thenerves. Stress and tensionwithin the body damagesyour health regardless of age. With this scanning technol-ogy, Dr. Huisheere can accu-rately measure the efficiencyof your nervous system whichtells us how stress on yourbody is impacting your over-all health and well-being.

• The Heart Rate Variability(HRV) scan helps the doc-tor to determine your

overall ability to adapt tostress in the environment. It does this by looking atthe time of your pulse anddetermining the balanceand tension within yournervous system. Stressfulhabits including poor di-etary choices, limited ex-ercise, and constantemotional aggravationcan cause the body to bestuck in the “fight-flight”stress response. Low heartrate variability is associ-ated with acceleratedaging and poor health.Published research hasshown that chiropracticadjustments have a bene-ficial effect on heart ratevariability.

• The Electromyography(EMG) scan evaluates thefunction of the musclesthat support and moveyour spine. These musclesare controlled by thenerves running within it.This test measures howmuch energy is needed tomaintain your posture andhow it is distributedthroughout the muscles.Over time, daily stresscan continue to overworkthese muscles, causingthem to lose their supportand mobility. Muscles fa-tigue and poor energy dis-tribution are signs of yourentire health being understress.

• The Thermography (Ther-mal) scan is used to assessneurology that helps tocontrol your organs, glands, blood vessels, andimmune system. This in-strument does so by pre-cisely measuringdifferences in temperaturealong the spine. Tempera-ture is an accurate indica-tor as to where the stressis building up and howdeeply it affects your bod-ily functions.

A neurological approach tochiropractic care is especiallyimportant when working withkids, babies, and expectingmothers. Many local familiesvisit Roots Chiropractic formany reasons other than pain.Lots of parents are seekinghelp for challenges like colic, constipation, ear infections, anxiety, and ADHD. Usingthis technology and address-ing the nervous system, fam-ilies are learning more abouthow their neurology func-tions and how chiropracticcan help their body operate toits’ full potential.
