PHANG NGA BAY REGATTA

SETTING SAIL

From the third to the seventh of February, the 13th Phang Nga Bay Regatta will be the scene for the region’s yachting community, as participants battle it out against the spectacular backdrop of Phang Nga Bay.

With four days of racing and fi ve days of partying within the three provinces of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi, the regatta surely is one of the most scenic events on the Asian racing calendar, and always lives up to its reputation as the FUN Regatta!

More than 60 yachts are expected to enter, with boats and crews joining from around the world. They’ll compete for honours in six classes: Racing, Cruising A, Cruising B, Bareboat Charter, Firefl y 850 and Multihull.

This hugely popular event is unlike other regattas in that it follows a course with a diff erent stop-over each night. The 2010 competition starts with

registration and the opening party at the Absolute Chandara Resort and Spa at Ao Po in the north of Phuket, sponsored by the Absolute Resort Group. The fi rst race day (the 4th) heads out from Ao Po and races north to the top of Phang Nga Bay, past the famous ramparts of Koh Phanak, Koh Hong group of islands and James Bond Island ending the day at one of the area’s famed beachside restaurants, Laem Sak Seafood at Chong Lat. The second race day (the 5th) will see the fl eet running south to one of the many secluded islands of the bay and another stunning party venue at Ko Yao Noi Paradise Resort. The race then heads over to Krabi on the 6th for another beach party at the famed Sheraton Krabi hotel. On the 7th, the fi nal race day heads home to Phuket through the open waters of Phang Nga Bay with the closing party in Chalong.

The Regatta is organised by the PNBR 2010 Organising Committee under the auspices of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, and the courses which the fl eet

sail every day are set by local Phuket sailing personalities, Andy Dowden and Simon James. Thai government sponsorship is bestowed courtesy of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Sports Association of Thailand.

The regatta committee welcomes back the grand lady of the sea, the majestic ‘Silolona’ as its main committee boat and she is joined by the imposing ‘Diva Andaman’, ‘El Aleph’ and ‘S/V Vega III’ with ‘M/V Moonbeam’ and Lee Marine’s ‘Merry Fisher’ in support. Other regular supporters that are welcomed back include QBE insurance, Electrical Marine, Quantum Sails, Oriental Events, Phuket International Hospital, Asia Marine, Ko Yao Paradise, International

Super Yacht Services, Haad Tip (Coca-Cola), Capital TV, 91.5 FM ‘Phuket Island Radio', SEA Yachting and the Phuket Gazette.

In a year that has been particularly hard on event sponsorship, the organising committee are also very grateful to new sponsors who have joined the regatta this year. These include Absolute Hotel & Resorts, Absolute Chandara, Sheraton Krabi, Jumeira Private Island, Emerald Villa Services, Nikita’s, PIMEX, Elite Yachting and Sea-ex.com and media partners MyPhuketInfo.com, Yachtstyle, The Nation and PGTV.

The Phang Nga Bay Regatta off ers some challenging racing in breathtaking locations, and is the perfect opportunity for some great competition and FUN!

Most islands are uninhabited, offering secluded anchorages under soaring cliffs fringed with jungle, as well as fascinating dinghy expeditions to hidden beaches, caves and creeks not shown on charts or maps. Three rivers run into the head of the bay so the water is silty, though otherwise clean, forming a milky green backdrop to the striking scenery.

Since a large part of the area north of Koh Yao is shallow (less than 10 metres), it is possible to anchor virtually anywhere in north Phang Nga Bay. This chapter, then, focuses only on the more suitable overnight anchorages – those which provide shelter from the squalls and storms which can hit unexpectedly, particularly in the southwest monsoon season.

Some of the area covered by this section is National Park and rangers patrol around the islands. The entry fee is 200 Baht per boat and 200 Baht per day per person on board, which is collected on the spot.

NORTH PHANG NGA BAYThe sheer-sided sea mountains that rise vertically out of Phang Nga Bay form some of Thailand’s most spectacular scenery. Images of Phang Nga have travelled the world and shaped perceptions of southern Thailand, and the boating experiences to be had here.

As a result the cruising yachtsman may encounter many tour boats and sea canoes during the middle of the day, but tranquillity returns by late afternoon. While the bay itself is not so large, the number of islands, inlets and mangrove channels ensure that no matter how long a yachtsman spends here, new experiences will always be nearby.

We list only 21 of the many anchorages in this area. Much of the joy of sailing in Phang Nga, after all, lies in discovering the uncounted creeks, caves and coves for yourself.

Koh Ngam

Koh Chong Lat

Koh Khlui

KOH CHONG LAT & KOH KHLUI CHANNELAccess to the channel

The deep entrance to the north of Koh Chong Lat is easily navigable, as is the middle entrance just north of Koh Khlui. The middle entrance should be approached on an easterly heading, turning southeast between the islands.

Inside the main channel between Koh Chong Lat and the mainland, immediately north of the middle passage, is a dangerous area of shallow water with drying rocks. This should be left well to port if heading north.

If entering the main channel from the south, it’s better to stay close to Koh Khlui which will afford a minimum depth of 3 metres.

When entering from the north it is better to pass through the narrow channel between Koh Ngam and Koh Chong Lat which is deep rather than passing north of Koh Ngam where there is a very large drying bank.

NORTHERN CHANNEL25 miles from Yacht Haven

A

This is a quiet location with beautiful views of the sheer cliffs of Koh Chong Lat to the west. The anchorage is on a direct line between the two islets shown on the chart, in 8-10 metres, near a lovely mangrove-covered flat, which is awash at high tide.

This spot is good for all wind conditions, though mid tide currents of up to 3 knots mean that care should be taken if swimming from the boat.

Local lore has it that there are no longer any crocodiles in the area, although there are families of sea otters which can be spotted at dusk.

This has been used as an overnight anchorage for the Phang Nga Bay Regatta which is held every year during Chinese New Year and attracts over 50 yachts.

To the east on the mainland at Leam Sak village is an excellent seafood restaurant which can be accessed directly by dinghy at high tide or via a concrete jetty on the other side of the headland at the head of a mangrove creek.

MIDDLE PASSAGE24 miles from Yacht Haven

B

Anchorage can be found in the passage in 4-5 metres, making for a good overnight stop in either season. To the north and south large and scenic bays with shallow waters are easily reached by dinghy. The bay to the south is an ideal anchorage for bilge keelers or vessels drawing less than 1 metre.

KOH KLUI EAST23 miles from Yacht Haven

C

Koh Khlui East is very sheltered, with good holding in the southwest monsoon season. The best anchorage is just south of the small inlet in about five metres. This is also the best place from which to explore the bay and rocky outcrops to the north by dinghy.

Although economic turmoil has ravaged the world’s economies, Phuket, in many ways, appears to be untouched by this. In a picture-perfect setting which most people can only dream about, luxurious sail and power yachts anchor in the waters off Phuket Island for a fi ve-star, exclusive fun event, the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous.

Held on the 17th and 18th of December every year, the Asia Superyacht

Rendezvous welcomes superyachts of a minimum of 100 feet for two days

of social and sailing activities. Although participation is by invitation only,

the ninth running of the event saw the largest fl eet ever with 11 superyachts

present. Old friendships were renewed and new ones forged.

Photos courtesy of Asia Pacifi c SuperyachtsFeature

This prestigious event is hosted by hotel sponsor The Chedi Phuket, a luxury

hotel on Surin Beach. Feadship of Holland, the world's premier superyacht

builder, is a principal sponsor along with co-sponsors Asia Pacifi c Superyachts

and Jumierah Private Island. Co-organiser Charlie Dwyer, captain of the

superyacht, Yanneke Too, says, “This annual celebration is the only major

event of its kind in Asia. It also represents Phuket’s coming of age as a major

yachting destination for the international community.”

For most of the participants and spectators, the highlight of the event is

the 'Feadship Challenge', which is held during the opening party beside the

Chedi pool. It’s presided over by Feadship and is represented by Francois

ASIA SUPERYACHT RENDEZVOUS –

FUN ON AND OFF THE WATER

THE BIG BOATS COME TO PLAY!

Van Well, President of Feadship America. The challenge brings competing

crews together as boat builders to construct small boats from kits. Creativity

and originality are frequently evident in the designs; the biggest test then

becomes seeing if they actually fl oat. Model yachts compete in pairs, in two

three-metre-long gutters. Using only his or her breath, the appointed 'blower'

carefully sails the team's boat down the gutter to the end where he must

consume some sumptuously fried bugs, turn the boat around and blow it to

back to the fi nish line. Spectators cheer on their favourites from the sidelines.

The winner of the heat moves on to the next round.

Two prizes are awarded. Last year M/Y Vie Sans Soueis won the hotly

contested challenge. The second award for the best designed boat went to

the team from Silolona, which was built in the likeness of their Indonesian

phinisi, a traditional wooden sailboat.

On the Friday, the sailing yachts gathered for a race in Pansea Bay in front

of the Chedi. The 2009 event saw fi ve sailing yachts participating in the

Feature: Asia Superyacht Rendezvous

triangular course and the power yacht M/V Maverick providing committee

services. It was a sight that proved to be truly spectacular, often only boat-

lengths separating the superyachts. The 48-metre Thalia stood out amongst

the fl eet, coming from behind to cross the fi nish line fi rst.

The late afternoon cocktail party was held aboard Silolona, where

entertainment included the Indonesian crew dressed in traditional regalia,

playing traditional instruments and singing. The celebration then moved

shoreside to The Chedi for a formal gala for superyacht owners and a

beachside BBQ for the crews and other participants.

Fantastic social and sailing events at an unparalleled location made the Asia

Superyacht Rendezvous 2009 the most successful one yet. Simply, it’s the

best attended superyacht event in Asia and it’s expected that the tenth year

will be even more spectacular.

Festival Warm-Up GigThursday, Feb 25 (10pm)

at Tai Pan, Patong Beach.

Cinema Central Festival

Let’s talk rubbish: Or more specifi cally about how we dispose of those black bags full of the stuff that is left out for the refuse collections in the UK. Phuket take note as you are not the only ones with this problem.

RUBBISH

The UK, historically, is amongst the countries within the European

Union (EU) which rely most heavily upon landfi ll for disposal. 75%

of municipal waste is sent to landfi ll, against an EU average of 45%

(2003 statistics). More recent fi gures from 2007 indicate that the UK

continues to be among the EU’s worst off enders with regards to the

volume of waste land fi lled per capita, depositing 324 kg per capita,

compared to the EU average of 181 kg. That’s about 25 million

tonnes a year going into holes in the ground.

The EU Landfi ll Directive has set member nations limits for the

amount of biodegradable municipal solid waste permitted to be

landfi lled by certain key dates (2010, 2013 and 2020).

The UK’s targets are translated into landfi ll limits for individual local

authorities. Failure to achieve these targets gives rise to fi nes of up to

£150 per tonne. Local authorities also face statutory targets for the

recycling of household waste.

UK landfi ll capacity could become fully utilised by 2014, assuming a

continuation of 2007 input levels.

The use of alternatives to landfi ll plays an important part in waste

producers attempts to improve their environmental performance.

A solution is for local and city council authorities to compost the

waste. One company is at the forefront of this technology and it’s

this company I want to concentrate on.

New Earth Solutions was established in 2002, out of waste

management origins to pursue landfi ll diversion and composting

operations. The company has successfully developed low-impact,

fully-enclosed facilities that utilise mechanical biological treatment

(MBT) and composting technology. New Earth Solutions has a

saleable business model and employs a modular build approach

for its technology. New site development costs are typically £10m

to £12m for a plant with 50,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of capacity.

New Earth Solutions has three operational waste treatment facilities

(Canford, Blaise and Sharpness) with a combined capacity of almost

170,000 tpa, and is growing organically by winning Local Authority

waste treatment contracts, which underpin the development of

new plants. A further three facilities (Cotesbach, Britannia Zinc and

Willow) with a combined capacity of 300,000 tpa, supported by

Local Authority waste contracts, are expected to open in 2010 and

2011. Planning permission at Longwood (in Lincolnshire) has been

achieved in 2009 and this site is expected to open in 2011, subject

to securing an underpinning waste contract.

The company has nearly 3,300,000 tonnes of secured and/or

awarded local authority contracts valid for the next 20 years. This

translates into circa £200m of revenue at current prices.

All this makes interesting reading, but how can we invest in this

unique opportunity?

The Premier Fund Group based in the Isle of Man has opened a fund

investing exclusively in New Earth Solutions, and other ‘new earth’

energy companies. Over the past 18 months the fund has returned

16.9%, giving it an average annual fi gure of over 12%. The New Earth

Solutions Fund was launched in July 2008 and has never posted a

losing month which includes the months when global stock markets

were crashing as a result of the credit crunch. It can be accessed

direct or through a portfolio bond which I wrote about in an earlier

article. There’s an old Yorkshire saying, “Where there’s muck there’s

brass,” and this fund has certainly proved that.

Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with

a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff , with teak

fl oors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some

restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with

Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the

delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is

one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket.

Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa

Patong Seafood International

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant

was the fi rst seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It

has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment

after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.

The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open

dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood

is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the fi nest

selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at

Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with

simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai

delicacies to perfection.

The fi rst thing that you will notice are the friendly staff . The smiles, the

attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something

you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals

come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

LIM’s at Kalim Bay is an elegant custom-designed restaurant and a gallery of bold, very abstract art, built on a tropical hillside garden beside one of Phuket’s few natural rivers. Call it a hidden treasure.

LIM’s has special off erings of generous portions that combine interesting textures and tastes. There’s a pomelo salad with shrimp that has a fresh, very clean taste. The slices of marinated duck breast rolled in cucumber are very light and match either the Australian or New Zealand red or white wines off ered on the menu. Traditional, popular curries can be found on the menu with large king prawns, chicken or duck and there’s a section for vegetarians.

Along with NINE Lounge and Bar, this is a restaurant to relax in, to take your time between courses and enjoy the company of your dinner companions. Until now, the pleasure of an evening at LIM’s, a favourite of Thai and expat residents, has spread mostly by discreet word of mouth as the chosen elegant hideaway for the discerning diner. Now the word is out.

Set in the 'Heritage' part of Phuket Town, Siam Indigo represents all that is good about the area and the changes that are happening there.

Set up in 2006, Siam Indigo off ers a unique setup where works from local artists adorn the 90-year-old walls in the white table and chair dining room while the lounge/bar area sticks to a more modern style. Overall, Siam Indigo's décor is a successful marriage of old, atmospheric Chinese shophouse and eclectic art with a broad emphasis on space and light.

To the back of the restaurant is a Mexican hacienda-style patio featuring a quasi-open kitchen where diners can enjoy the evening breezes. Essentially, the décor refl ects the attitude of the owners: a healthy respect for the building's heritage with a leaning towards the contemporary.

Following the tradition of Asian cultures, the menu has been designed for sharing. Pass plates amongst friends and companions and embrace this custom!

Siam Indigo is registered in Thailand best restaurants Tatler guide for 2007-2008- 2009. Enjoy excellent Thai delicaties with some fusion creations. they don't know how to ride and often don’t wear a helmet. They then say

that Thailand’s roads are unsafe, which may be true, but they don’t help.

How is Phuket from your point of view? Growing every year and despite

all of the diffi culties, will remain a very strong tourist destination for years to

come. I see it becoming more and more of a place for retirement.

How old are you? 48 this year.

What school do your kids go to? Headstart – a really great new school at an

aff ordable price, with a maximum of 15 children in each class.

How do you spend time with your family? Going to the beach and jet-

skiing, and before you ask, “No, I’ve never had a problem with the guys in

Karon who rent them.”

Who is the person who has most infl uenced you? My wife, who is

Japanese. She’s the calmest person I know.

Motto for life? Live it, and try not to regret anything.

Could you tell us about your lifestyle? Work hard and play hard. Enjoy the

children, family and friends.

Where is your favourite place in Phuket? Nai Harn Beach, it's such a great

location.

Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? I’m a

member of IBAP, BBAP and the Chaîne Des Rôtisseurs but I’m not really active,

as the restaurant takes most of my time and any free nights I try to spend

with the family.

Where are you from originally? I’m from the UK, but I lived in France for

10 years and then 16 years in Switzerland although 80% of the time I

was travelling all over the world, for my business.

When did you move to Phuket? My wife and I have had a house here for

fi ve years, although we were living in Singapore. We decided to move here

permanently in January of this year.

Had you been here before? I’ve been coming to Phuket on vacation and for

seminars for over 20 years.

What made you decide to come and live here? I needed a change of pace

and lifestyle. I was travelling too much. I decided I needed an activity which

fi tted within a 30 kilometre radius instead of 30, 000. I’ve two young children

aged seven and fi ve, so spending time with them is important to me.

What did you do before you came to Phuket? I was the Executive Vice-

President, Sales and Marketing, for an international electronics company.

Did you come here intending to set up a business? Yes. Originally, I

wanted to set up a Japanese retirement community called Kiraku dedicated

only to Japanese retirees, who would stay for fi ve to seven years. However, it

was very diffi cult to raise the equity required. Then an opportunity came up

to buy the Da Vinci restaurant in Nai Harn. Both my partners and I liked the

place and we thought it deserved some investment and targeted marketing.

We set out to make it one of the best restaurants on the south of the island.

How long have you been running Da Vinci? Since January of this year.

Why did you choose the name ‘Da Vinci’? That was already the name. We

did not want to change it. We just completed the branding with the ‘vitruvian

man’ logo, which a lot of people recognise easily.

What problems did you face and how did you overcome them? Firstly,

we had to get the staff on our side, by taking care of them. Secondly, we had

to advertise. However, marketing will only get people in the door, one time. If

it’s good, customers will tell one or two people, if it's bad, they’ll tell everyone.

How do you approach your job? With an open mind and some trepidation.

I’ve never run a restaurant before and it’s a lot harder work than I ever

imagined.

What would you say is your motto for running the business? Keep it

simple but sophisticated. Hire good people, let them do their job, and be

there to help when needed.

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? In Nai Harn. The south of the island is

still like all Thailand used to be.

What infl uenced your choice when you bought your house? Proximity to

the beach and the advice of the architect.

What do you like and dislike about living in Phuket? I love the overall

atmosphere of the island and Thailand in general. What I don't like is the way

tourists tend to behave here. They put their lives at risk renting motorcycles

The Phuket International Blues Rock Festival began in December

2005 as a two-day event on the weekend before Christmas at

the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa. The reason those dates

were chosen originally, was because we wanted to add a positive

event, to off set the sadness associated with the upcoming tsunami

anniversary.

This year the festival will be huge – the event will see twelve acts in

total, with eight international bands imported for the occasion. It’s

a great party with tremendous music, plenty of food and drink and

other activities.

The event main headliner will be the legendary blues artist Charlie Musselwhite and his band from the United States. From the tiniest

blues clubs to the world's biggest festivals, Charlie has played

them all. Now he comes to Thailand for the fi rst time, and on

From Malaysia comes AkashA, a top-rated, world-famous band

playing music with a soulful theme.

Famed Latino blues meister Andy Gonzales (USA) joins for the fi rst

time along with Robert (One Man) Johnson (USA) and Bangkok’s

Retrovision.

By popular demand Rich Harper (USA) will return along with KNiKi from Australia. Our very own Tony Wilson and Rob Davies will also

be back with a top notch local band.

The festival is a charity event with funds donated to organisations

dedicated to providing schooling for under-privileged local children.

For 2010 the festival will support the Rotary Club of Patong, Phuket

and its local education program. The 2008 Festival DVD is available

so you can re-live the highlights of that previous show

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes

massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method

to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the

American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in

Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties

of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular

Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for

mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils,

face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife

Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into

a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care

products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top

resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is

never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened

to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Open daily 9:00 – 20:00 hrs.Tel: +66 (0)76 271233

10/2 Srisoonthorn Rd., Cherngtalay, Thalang, Phuket 83100Website: www.lemongrasshouse.com Spa

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia,

Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his

hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and

cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made

from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile

extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good

idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and

feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can

be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-

blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E

enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and

has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best

of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a

selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where

you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect

gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the

privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

THE ROYALSPA

KHAO RANG

The Royal SpaTo experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and refl ect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.

The Royal Spa and Health ClubIn the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace.

With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and

with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing

stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals

and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and

Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development

industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and

Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly

interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses

black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a

profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market

themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but

professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as

tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff ,

and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal

Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house

'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa

training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of

therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then,

the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided

comprehensive and professional spa management, and development

programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a

standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure

a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It

truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of

relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My

fi rst feeling when I stepped through

the impressive gates of the Sukko spa

was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are

dressed beautifully in traditional Thai

style and the spa design, infl uenced by

the ancient Siamese capital, creates a

haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I

had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background

music, my mind was fi lled with a

peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the

warm traditional welcome (again from

Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating

Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where

the idea is to fl oat away past stresses

and wish for luck and joy from that

moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist

and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages

lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can

be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal

recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are

totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the

herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your

treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that

left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began

with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric

Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub

was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but

fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist

asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses

that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the

Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face

feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept:

"Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to

exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self

stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for

something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai

Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-

defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax

can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club,

where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet

safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas,

is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from

Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from

Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon

Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It

is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai

style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously

landscaped tropical forest.

Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want fi rst-class tropical treatments

in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the

newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides

the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete

with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms

and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong –

blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location.

Whether you’re suff ering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated

commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical

relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way

to start.

My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room.

Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam

into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing

power eases away aches and stress.

Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s

signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using

tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling

smooth and silky.

Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my

stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of

Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called

‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous,

fl owing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential

oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands

worked their magic on my body, I felt I had

left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana

angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating

Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage

with natural creams, this treatment cleansed

and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles.

With all my senses heightened, I detected

the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough

to eat, but alas just one of the natural

ingredients in the creams my therapist was

using. This one is a must for anyone thinking

of having a ‘face lift’!

Both airports have had their share of criticism over the years; usually justifi ed.

Suvarnarbhumi, in particular, seems sometimes to have gone out of its way,

to be inconvenient and uncomfortable. It’s easy to criticize of course, and

even when problems are identifi ed it takes time, and above all money, to put

things right. The eff ort is still a work in progress, but at least it is progress. I

don’t know who is responsible for the all this but in fairness one would have

to say that the much-maligned Airports Authority of Thailand [AOT] can at

least step forward now, and take a small bow. Let’s run the rule over both

operations and see what’s changed.

When Suvarnabhumi fi rst opened four years ago, it was a disaster. Basically,

it began operations when the infrastructure was unfi nished and the systems

untested – a case of politicians not professionals, calling the shots.

The Arrivals hall was like one gigantic rugby scrum. Passengers, friends

meeting them, legitimate hotel and tour representatives all rubbed shoulders

energetically with a totally unregulated bunch of con artists and spivs. In spite

of costing a pretty penny, the baggage handling system just didn’t work. So

there you were – bags lost, pushed and shoved, baffl ed and bewildered and

getting ripped off by an unlicenced limo driver. Have a nice day!

The taxi rank signage was conspicuous by its total absence and the fast

transit rail link to town was [and still is, of course] a twinkle in the Minister

of Transport’s eye. There was even dark mutterings about subsidence on

runways and lots of unanswered calls from IATA.

In Departures, the seats were insuffi cient and indescribably uncomfortable.

Walkways were constricted by the intrusive fronts of retrofi tted shops which

off ered stuff you didn’t want, at prices you couldn’t aff ord. Direction signs

were often handwritten on cardboard, and the walk to the gate lasted longer

than some fl ights. A restorative beer cost a king’s ransom.

Overall, the experience was abysmal. OK, you can call this ‘teething problems’.

Remember when the new Hong Kong airport opened and the computers

crashed on day one? Heathrow, of course, has been an unmitigated disaster

for as long as records have been kept.

Now cut to Suvarnabhumi in 2010. Signage has been transformed – it’s

coherent, professional and even accurate. If you want the taxi rank you can

fi nd it, and once there, the allocation and administration is orderly and user-

friendly. All taxis are registered and metered. There are still a few scams but

I’ve experienced worse in Charles de Gaulle; however, that’s another story!

The length of the walks to the gates obviously cannot be shortened, but

more thought has gone into the logistics of connecting fl ights, and transit

services are now of a good standard. The walk seems shorter if you’re sure

you’re going in the right direction. The security system has defi nitely changed

for the better

Now let’s look at Suvarnabhumi’s smaller sibling, our very own Phuket Airport.

If you’re leaving, both the domestic and the international terminals now have

vastly improved eating and drinking facilities. The domestic terminal has had

a much needed makeover and has been re-designed to handle the ever-

increasing numbers. The only downside that’s immediately obvious, is that

if you’re booked with a low-cost carrier you’ve to walk to what is essentially

another terminal to check-in, and then back again to immigration. But, hey,

you’re doing things on the cheap. What do you expect?

Immigration control, long the subject of intense criticism, is also better, with

more booths both outbound and inbound, more offi cers on duty and a

computer system which is slightly less glacial, than of yore. Lines seem to be

shorter, and to move faster.

At the international terminal there’s now a decent range of shops and

restaurants. They still charge highway robbery prices, but is there any traveller

left on the planet, who doesn’t know that airports are not the place to do your

Christmas shopping? At least the coff ee and ambiance are much improved.

And it’s all set to get better. The AOT has a 5 billion baht master plan to

upgrade Phuket Airport to maintain standards consistent with the increasing

number of passengers; almost four million in 2009. This is a remarkable

throughput for such a small airport.

It isn’t all perfect. The taxi touts are still active, but even they seem to have

been reined in a little. The parking fee went from 50 baht to 200 baht per day

overnight; but it seems to have worked, as getting a space when you arrive, is

easier. Poor people shouldn’t fl y. More car parks are planned.

Airports are notoriously diffi cult and complex facilities to run, with huge

numbers of people with confl icting needs congregating in a confi ned space,

further constrained by security and safety considerations. The art of keeping

them occupied while waiting for their journeys revolves around variety and

service. We’re getting there.

While Phuket International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport still have

a way to go to match some other airports in the region and around the

world, it’s heartening to see positive progress on upgrading them both to

a standard that will make Thailand proud to welcome more than 13 million

visitors a year.

Photos from Wikipedia.orgFeature

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Nevertheless, let’s take a short trip backwards in time and contrast the standards of performance of Phuket International Airport and Suvanarbhumi Airport in Bangkok as they operate today, compared to just a year ago. By any measure, the changes have been remarkable and positive.

“The Hermitage” - A perfect sanctuary hidden in lush tropical jungle, situated

a few minutes from one of Phuket's most sought-after locations – Kata

Beach. 12 boutique villas at The Hermitage are set over 9 rai or 14,400 sqm

and majestically designed with the advantages of an elevated hillside, off er

magnifi cent ocean views fast becoming rare on the island.

Our acclaimed architect team has embraced a contemporary Thai style design

for each villa with the utmost care and attention given to providing a natural

feel. Each of the custom built villas is built on handsome plot sizes ranging from

500 to 1,100 sqm with spacious living area of 600 to 800 sqm. and a price range

starting from 72 million baht. The project theme is environmentally friendly,

created to capture the benefi ts from the site’s lush greenery. The residence

will be surrounded by nature preserved at its most beautiful and original

condition. To give ultra luxurious feels and comfort, a private swimming pool,

spa area and grand terracing come with the villa as standard. Residents can

enjoy stunning sea view from every room in their own piece of paradise.

A highlighted feature, not found in any other project, is a natural landscaped

waterfall within the complex communal green area. The centerpiece of The

Hermitage is a magnifi cent 3 storey (800 sqm) clubhouse. A chauff eured golf

buggy transports you from the parking area at ground level to the villas at all

levels of the site.

Opulent architecture is the signature of the clubhouse with high beamed

columns and full glass windows maximizing the spectacular sea views. A wide

range of facilities are available including a glass elevator, a lobby lounge, a

spacious indoor/outdoor international restaurant, ‘sunset’ bar, a fully equipped

fi tness centre and a traditional Thai health spa set over two fl oors with

sumptuous sea views. A separate outdoor spa sits adjacent to the clubhouse

in its own private waterfall garden to aff ord residents the ultimate luxury living

amid a serene and tranquil environment.

Only the fi nest quality local and imported materials are used in the construction

with teak wood and marble prominent throughout. Every villa features fully

folding teakwood doors and intricate carvings on the teakwood facades

Useful info

Phuket has plenty of choices when it comes to places to see and things to do. This month we’d like to off er you a guide to some activities which will give you an insight into Phuket’s cultural side away from the usual tourist attractions. We hope that this may enhance your holiday experience and perhaps persuade you to return in the future.

Try Phuket Local food: They say, “We are what we eat,” and again, “Life is a journey.” Those unique, exotic dishes which you sample along the way, help to make the trip worthwhile. Here are a few local delicacies that you won’t usually fi nd in your hotel restaurant.

Dim Sum. • The Dim Sum is a steamed dumpling fi lled with a choice of

every imaginable variety of sweet or savoury fi lling; usually served with

Chinese herb chicken soup and condiments.

Kanom Jin Phuket.• This is a vermicelli-based dish served with a variety

of curry sauces. Often eaten as breakfast, it comes with a range of fresh

vegetables, boiled eggs, and curried fi sh mousse (Hor Mok).

Mee Hok Kian.• This is made with large yellow noodles similar to

Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone soup

and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee Hok Kian Pak

includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork crackling and a

choice of pork, fi sh or squid. Recommended Mee Hok Kian restaurants

are Mee Ao Gay, located on Poonpol Road, and Mee Sapam at Sapam

Village, Thepkasattri Road.

Oh Tao.• Also known as Hoi Tod

Hokgian, this is a fried oyster

dish prepared with eggs, fl our,

bean sprouts and taro root – a

favourite Phuket snack. Look

for it at the Oh Tao Wongwian

Restaurant, located near the

Clock Tower Circle, Phuket Road

or at the Oh Tao Restaurant

next to Bang Neaw Municipality

School, Phuket Road.

Oh Aew. • An unbeatable Phuket dessert which is made from jellied

banana-fl our mixed with boiled red beans, ice, and sweet red syrup.

Available everywhere.

View Antique Buildings: A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fi ne example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, specialty restaurants and more.

The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the

town branch of the Siam City Bank are further

examples of architecture from the past. All are well

worth a visit.

Join the Chinese New Year

Celebrations in Phuket: Phuket has a big Chinese community, so Chinese New Year celebrations are a major event on the island’s calendar. The festival traditionally begins on the fi rst day of the fi rst lunar month, which this year falls on 14 February 2010. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and enlivened with cultural and historical displays.

Enjoy the public parade which includes

colourful dragon and lion fl oats, fi reworks,

crackers and traditional music and dance.

At the same time, you can sample a wide range of

Chinese cuisine. It’s all part of the festivities.

During this time Chinese houses will be

festooned with red banners and decorations to

promote luck and happiness during the coming

year. Don't forget your camera.

Health matters Health mattersMassage

The best part of it all is that getting a good massage in Phuket is easy.

Either ask a Thai female friend who was trained by her mother and for

years gave dad a massage in the evenings, or go to one of the many

establishments around the island off ering massage services. Massage

is very popular on Phuket as more and more spa and massage centers

open, some of which look more like 5 star hotels and others which,

whilst cheaper, off er more than massage services. Be aware that prices,

and standards of service, vary widely. You

could pay as little as 150 baht for an hour

of massage or indulge in a comprehensive

massage-beauty treatment-body scrub

package costing 8,000 baht or more. You

could also get more than you bargained

for, depending on your choice of

establishment.

For the majority of people, a massage

session will be enjoyable and benefi cial.

There are however, some serious health troubles that could result

from improper treatments or poor hygiene. To avoid such dangers, be

choosy in selecting the establishment, and if you do it cheap, follow

the advice below.

Most of the better massage outlets are designed in soothing, natural

tones and textures and a fragrant smell of incense or burning oil

usually emanates the rooms. There’s generally an unhurried pace, and

you’ll be given plenty of time to shower, settle in and make yourself

comfortable before your session begins.

Ideally, your therapist will discuss the treatment with you before it

begins but this is not always done, especially at smaller, less expensive

places where staff may have had minimal training and cannot

communicate with you, unless you are fl uent in Thai. If you have a

health problem, such as a bad back, arthritis or a skin condition, let

your therapist know, and be strict about not aggravating it.

If you’re having a Thai massage, your therapist will normally follow a

set routine and will not deviate from this routine unless you demand

it. It’s traditional, and the routine is handed down from generation to

generation, and at each teaching school from teacher to student. In

small massage places giving traditional Thai massage, your therapist

may be uncomfortable if you interrupt her routine.

If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, ensure you do not

overdo the stretching and exercising and if chest pain presents, cease

the treatment immediately. If you have sensitive skin or allergies,

ensure that the herbs and massage oils will not cause a reaction. You

can always test them fi rst, by adding a test to your inner forearm and

leave it on for 20-30 minutes. If the site becomes red, infl amed or

irritated, cease using it. In less reputable establishments, do not believe

what is listed on the bottle or container is actually in the container.

Cheap substitutes are often used as well as being watered down or

have had other additives added.

Bone cracking in the neck, back, fi ngers and other areas is also

common in many massages, particularly Thai massage. I, and many

orthopedic surgeons, would recommend against the therapeutic value

of this bone cracking as serious injury can and frequently does occur.

This also applies to the practice of walking on people’s backs. Applying

continued pressure over the femoral arteries in the groin area to stop

the blood fl ow to the legs, whilst eliciting a pleasant sensation once

the blood fl ow is restored to the legs is dangerous. It has and can cause

blood clots and serious health complications. Blood will coagulate and

clot if it is stopped. Your therapist should never massage the front of

your neck, near the carotid arteries or voice box. Massaging this area

can cause your heart rate to drop to dangerous levels.

Massage

that could result

You could be dreaming of a tropical oasis, under

the palm trees, listening to the waves lap onto

the beach whilst having a gentle and soothing

massage. Take you pick, it could be a foot massage,

a body scrub or even a full course aromatherapy

course lasting 3 hours or more. This is heaven.

Improperly applied stretches can also lead to injury or pain in muscles

and joints. I know of many clients who, whilst having a Thai massage,

were asked by their therapist if the massage was too painful, and

instead of saying yes, and possibly to avoid upsetting the masseuse,

they came away with deep bruising and soft tissue injuries. Pain is

your body telling you that something is not right. Heavy pain during

a massage is just not right. Deep tissue massage can also aggravate

deep-vein thrombosis (blood clotting) or damage skin, muscles or

internal organs.

The cleanliness of most massage establishments is of a high standard,

but beware that bacteria can spread rapidly if hygienic standards

are not maintained. There is a risk of catching skin and soft tissue

diseases, eye, ear and urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis or more

serious diseases. In cheaper establishments, bedding is not changed,

therapists may not practice good personal hygiene and some may

have communicable diseases.
