What is KNX?

KNX is an international standard (ISO/IEC 14543, CENELEC EN 50090, CEN EN 13321-1, GB/Z 20965) automated communications protocol based on the widely recognized EIB (European Installation Bus), BatiBus, and the EHS (European Home System) protocols.

In a KNX system, all bus devices (twisted pair, radio frequency, power line or IP/Ethernet) are connected and able to exchange information. Such bus devices can be either be the sensors or actuators needed to control essential building management equipment. Specific examples include: lighting, blinds/shutters, security, energy management, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, signaling and monitoring systems, interfaces to service and building control technologies, remote control and metering, etc. KNX ultimately simplifies the control, monitoring and signaling of all of these features via a uniform system that requires no extra control centers.

KNX remains the world’s only open standard for all applications in Shopping Mall, offering powerful ETS PC software that empowers the planning, engineering, installation and configuration of all KNX-certified products.

What is DALI?

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) lighting systems leverage DALI-controlled fixtures and controllers throughout all building interiors. DALI Lighting Controllers, ballasts, transformers, drivers, emergency fittings and other electronic control gears and devices shall be fully complied with IEC 62386 standards. Easily reconfigurable with no need for time-consuming and troublesome re-wiring, DALI digital lighting systems will control and provide status updates down to individual ballast level.

A DALI ballast is an intelligent device that can be configured to remember its power-on status, maximum, minimum and system failure levels, plus fade rates and times. DALI ballasts are controllable by messages sent individually, by group or on a system wide basis. A DALI lighting system will also report the output level of every one of its ballasts and operational status of every one of its ballasts and lamps. It can also automatically test emergency fittings and report their status.

C-Bus is a microprocessor based wiring system that controls lighting and other electrical services. In addition to activating and deactivating lighting circuits and analogue-type controls such as dimming electronic fluorescent ballasts, C-Bus will control and automate virtually any type of electrical load.

To ensure faster more reliable operation, each C-Bus device has its own in-built microprocessor. These components can either be individually programmed via ‘point and click’ PC-based software or through an in-built/integral PC-free ‘Learn Mode’. Optimal communications speed and reliability are ensured because all C-Bus system information is held within individual C-Bus devices rather than at one central point. Whilst no computer is needed for normal C-Bus operations, C-Bus PC-based control and management software is available should you require further control flexibility.

Daylight Harvesting Daylight harvesting saves energy by continually monitoring and adjusting artificial and natural lighting to enhance occupants’ comfort by eliminating variations in lux levels.Light level sensors are used to determine lighting levels according to the sunlight filtering through windows in specific areas. Should a dimmer detect less than optimal artificial brightness in an area, it brightens lights to the desired brightness value. Similarly, when natural brightness begins to fade outdoors, the lighting control system adjusts the artificial light in small steps. Should they wish to, users can override these automatic light controls by means of a simple push-button.

Occupancy Control Occupancy sensors are frequently used to deactivate lighting or other loads when people leave a specific area of a building unattended. Such sensors are often combined with a wall switch to offer a choice of both manual and automatic activation/deactivation means. As a result, users occupying an area can manually control lighting without having to worry about wasting electricity by burning unnecessary lights when the areas are left unoccupied. Other infrequently occupied rooms such as staff and rest rooms can use occupancy sensors to completely eliminate wall switches altogether.

Control and Management System This system enables lighting to be activated and controlled via a combination of manual and automatic time scheduling, photoelectric and movement sensors. Such systems save energy by automatically deactivating lighting via a central control panel while still providing manual on/off controllable local light switches.

Schneider Electric also provides malls with total master controls that radiate out from a central point such as a security control room. These master systems enable at-a-glance monitoring of properties’ entire lighting installations and ensure quick, efficient troubleshooting of potential problems. The end result is reliable control and monitoring of both the mall’s lighting network and complete security system. Integrating Citect SCADE facilities will further add to operators’ ability to provide trouble-free delivery of safe, cost-effective and reliable control.

In this system, all controlled areas and loads are displayed on a PC across multiple windows via labels initiated by end-users with current load statuses shown in real time. Since all essential information relating to each load is accessible via the touch of a button, end-users can easily determine if a load is on, off, being dimmed to a particular level or being automatically controlled via the light level sensor. Each load’s status is then easily adjustable at the touch of a button.

Public Areas

Sympholux lighting control platforms combine all public lighting requirements and can be activated via a combination of manual switches and/or automatic controls via time scheduling, light level or occupancy sensors.

Brightly-lit public areas consume vast amounts of energy all night, every night. Usually scheduled to activate via a light level sensor, public area lighting control systems will deliver an extra dimension of flexibility. In ramping up lighting gradually rather than instantly, they will also reduce energy consumption and extend light fittings’ operational life.

Lighting circuits can be monitored via a central location to ensure everything is functioning correctly and that circuits that fail can immediately be identified. Exhaust fans can also be teamed with the same system network to provide one control point for all services.

Showrooms

Showroom lighting is generally provided by compact fluorescent down lights recessed into high ceiling cavities. Such lights require flexible dimming and control and should ideally be capable of DMX control and integration with audio visual systems. C-Bus architectural dimmers are fully compatible with, and can ensure seamless control of, any environment. They are also purpose-designed to dim large numbers of lights and will make it easy for operators to achieve their ideal architectural lighting effects.

A perfect complement to architectural lighting goals, dimmers can be used to create truly spectacular lighting effects. Their ability to dim vast numbers of lights will also conserve energy usage and lower power bills. C-Bus rugged high quality dimmers utilize advanced phase control switching to further cool operations and enhance reliability.

Override here is generally made via a touch-screen located in a centralized location whose menu is only accessible via a secure password. Such systems also allow for quick identification of lighting zones and rooms located through the building and simple disarming of sensors or existing programs.

External signage and flood lights can also be controlled by Schneider Electric’s lighting control systems. For further savings, some lights are designed to activate at dusk while all non-security lights turn off at 1.00am each morning.

Shop fit-outs are a retailer’s secret weapon in creating a memorable shopping experience for customers. Lighting, music and audio visual displays all play a vital role in establishing the shop’s brand and attitude and increasing visitors by offering a bright and inviting environment.

When used in retail environments, C-Bus can be designed to provide a mix of localized light, music and master controls. Schneider Electric audio solutions are another discreet way for retailers to provide background music to various parts of their shops. Multi-room audio (MRA) systems that enable simple, one-button activation of lighting, music and audio-visual displays and screens are also available and can be fully integrated into almost any automation network.

C-Bus MRA simplifies the provision of a single stand-alone amplifier with a connection for an MP3 player and provides on/off and volume controls via any C-Bus DLT (Dynamic Labelling Technology) or touch- screen. These single zones can be expanded to include a single-channel Audio Distribution Unit (ADU) which will enable the amplifier to retain both a local MP3 player and a secondary input. As these ADUs also have the ability to use Infra-red (IR) reticulation via the amplifier, any second device can also be controlled remotely.

Multi-room, multi-source music means operators can tailor different music to specific areas at varying volumes. The number of areas may vary dramatically depending upon the size of each installation. To ensure systems can play separate music sources in different zones simply requires a matrix switcher to co-ordinate and route sources.

Restaurants and Bars exude a unique air of sophistication and style. At night, flexible control of lighting scenes is essential in creating different spaces offering unique ambiences and dining experiences within the restaurant.

In this establishment, touch-screens installed at the reception desk provide automated control of all lighting, air conditioning and motorized blinds on the premises’ southern windows. Controlling all chandeliers and down lights, pre-set modes have been programmed to customize specific moods such as early evening, cloudy night, sunny day, shut down and cleaning modes for different areas of the restaurant.

Hosting everything from business seminars to social gatherings, VIP rooms must offer both scheduling managers and patrons great versatility. Ultimately, almost all systems must also offer flexible dimming and lighting control. Compatible with audio visual systems, Sympholux lighting control ensures seamless control of almost any event in almost any environment.

Other system control panels enable control of lighting via an attractively-designed Dynamic Labelling Technology (DLT) system mounted in the bar table or front desk workstation. Instructions:

1. Schneider Electric KNX control system can control the light, the blind and the air-conditioning within a building in an integrated way.

2. Through the interface of the central workstation, the system can monitor and control multiple environments.

3. Light turning on/off module with the function of current detection can examine whether the lights in public places are broken, and show the position of broken lights through computer alarms.

4. The central workstation shows the indoor temperature and allows the user to easily set temperature of each office. It is convenient to be maintained and it will decrease the global energy consumption.

5. Through the smart panel in offices, users can manually control light in the office area. It can serve as a backup, thus being safer of use.

6. The timer allows to conveniently turn on/off the lights in public places on schedule and then to conserve energy.

7. The light sensing on/off controller can automatically control solar-protection. If the sunshine is too strong, it will lower the sun-shades automatically. It prevents the indoor temperature from increasing too high, and thus the system will realize energy conservation.

8. The light sensing on/off controller can automatically deal with floodlighting and landscape lighting. When natural light decreases, the controller will automatically turn on the floodlighting. When natural light becomes brighter, it will automatically turn off the lights. The system is easily managed and allows conserving energy.
