AMFA Nominations TimeAMFA and ET seek nominations for Joint Board of Directors

AMFA and the AMFA Educational Trust relies on the involvement of volunteers to succeed. Founded in 1997, AMFA has benefited from the dedication of several manufacturing leaders serving as volunteer president, along with many others serving the organization in other capacities. Formed in 2001, the ET provides a tax exempt option for companies and individuals wishing to make charitable contributions.

Since 2012, AMFA and AMFA-ET have been governed by a shared Board of Directors. Seven two-year terms are up for election this year. Nominations are being accepted through November 9, 2018.

All employees/owners of an AMFA member company are eligible to serve on the board. Please to nominate yourself, an employee, or a fellow member. Consider this: the more active you are in the organization, the more your company gains from membership in AMFA. Board participation is an excellent way to develop relationships with your peers in manufacturing and stay on the forefront of new developments in the region.

AMFA-ET Fundraising Goal: $15,000Donations qualify as a charitable contributionThe leadership of AMFA Educational Trust established a goal to raise $15,000 this calendar year. The intention is to reach this goal via the organization’s two annual fundraisers: beer tasting (March) and golf social (June).

Please consider a donation to the AMFA Educational Trust. Funds raised by AMFA ET are used to support workforce development in the region, primarily in the form of grants to K-12 schools. Since 2005, ET has granted more than $170,000 in support of workforce development.

AMFA Educational Trust is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization; contributions qualify as a charitable donation on your tax return. Any individual or business interested in making a donation that will bring us closer to our $15,000 goal is encouraged to give the AMFA office a call at 877.330.2632.

Students Tours planned in the AMFA Region

As reported elsewhere in this newsletter, manufacturers across the State of Minnesota open their doors during the Statewide Dream It. Do It Tour of Manufacturing each October. Many of these tours are open to the public to encourage attendance by youth AND their parents. However, in some communities “Student Tours” are arranged during the school day to ensure that youth are exposed to local career opportunities in manufacturing.

Again this year, AMFA members and friends have stepped up to host “Student Tours” throughout the region. As of press date for this newsletter, final planning is underway. Thank you to Brad Vieths for arranging tours in the Duluth region, Heath Boe and Mary Brandt for arranging tours on the Range, and Jim Petruga for taking the lead in Superior. Check the next issue of Shoptalk for a final report on participation.

Thank youThank you to our September meeting hosts AmeriPride in Hibbing. The company information and tour were informative and the opportunity to network was a bonus to all in attendance.

AMFA Educational Trust Grant application deadlineThe next deadline for grant applications is January 31, 2019. You must be a 501(C)3, school, or other public entity to qualify, with a focus on one of three priority areas. More information and applications here.

Thank You 2018Education Sponsors

For the past several years, AMFA has recognized the need to “develop relationships between manufacturing and K-12 education” as a strategic priority. To that end, K-12 schools in the region enjoy free membership in the Association. Hats off to the 27 schools that have thus far taken advantage of free membership in AMFA!

In addition to free membership, K-12 representatives are offered free attendance at AMFA general meetings and plant tours. Administrators, teachers, students and even school board members are encouraged to attend AMFA monthly meetings, including a free lunch.

The AMFA Education Sponsor program is a means of underwriting the cost of free meals and free membership for K-12 education. AMFA is in the process of confirming Education Sponsors for 2019; call the office to express interest. The cost is just $100/year.

Our 2018 Education Sponsors are listed to the right: THANK YOU!

What's new at Iron Range MakerspaceRecent highlights• IRM needed meeting space, so we created a small

room ideal for 2-3 people. Then we walled off a conference room surrounding our 17 foot-long, IRM-made oak table (seats 19 comfortably). The conference room is equipped with a large screen TV, Power Point, Wi-Fi, white board, additional seating, room for presentations, and may be reserved for any purpose.

• A woman met with an IRM member for resume help and sent a note the next day stating: ‘And what a treasure you have there at the Makerspace! It was such a welcoming, friendly, positive environment!”

• Our retail inventory recently tripled; the number of members selling products has increased as well as the diversity of products ranging in price from $5 to over $1,000. Most items may also be purchased online at www.ironrangemakerspace.com.

• A well-used, not quite road-worthy plow truck was purchased last spring and has had multiple repairs, a lot of maintenance, and is now painted IRM colors! You can’t miss it on the black lot; check out the wrench

graphics (vinyl) and 3D ornament on the hood!• One member used the laser engraver extensively for

his wedding preparations. He engraved the table signs and decorations then worked on beer steins, wooden hangers, and YETI mugs as gifts for the wedding party.

• IRM members are working together to seek donations or grants to purchase and install a 37” 7 HP Powermatic drum sander for the wood shop. This purchase would accommodate larger pieces and increase production.

• One area businessman is sponsoring a teenage entrepreneur for one year by paying his monthly membership fee. This youth has demonstrated ability in the woodshop and is currently building cutting boards, furniture, and Christmas ornaments.

• We received multiple slices of a 226-year-old ash tree; the wood is dried and ready for making. Members are designing coffee tables: unique, one of a kind, likely three-legged, high-end pieces of furniture.

Future• Friday, October 5, IRM will be closed and staff will

be participating in the annual STEM Showcase at the Hibbing Memorial Building. 2,000 students will attend during the day. This event is FREE and open to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 pm; stop by and see our optical illusions!

Events• Events are open to the public and shop tours

available. Contact Andrew Hanegmon: 218-966-1192 or [email protected]
