REASON FOR EROSION

• Decline in sediment supply to the spit by Sungai Chenang, dueto a reduction in forest clearing.

• During construction of the resort, it was decided to enlarge

the spit by reclamation, based on the architectural layout.Since the new layout was not a stable situation, in the localwave climate, the coastline of the resort rapidly.

SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT

The project needs to address the coastal erosion of the PelangiBeach Resort while taking into consideration the recreational useof the beach.

Due to its purpose it is required that a solution should have:

Minimum visual impact on the beach,

And would not endanger recreation along the beach.

PROPOSED ALTERNATIVES

Rubble Mound Break Water• Quite massive, hinder the view from the beach to the offshore islands.

• Would lead to rip currents near the breakwater heads which could be dangerousfor swimmers

• Scour holes develop in front of the breakwaters due to wave reflection

• Expensive

DESIGN

• The initial height of the piles above the seabed is 1.5 m for the northern pile row and2.2 m for the southern pile row.

• The pile rows were placed 75 m offshore from the High Water line. The northern pilerow has a length of 120 m and the southern 140 m. The distance between both pilerows is 210 m.

• A beach replenishment of 15,000 m 3 was foreseen at the beach behind the two pilerows, using 400 m D50 sand.

PERFORMANCE

• ln general the pile rows performed excellent. The salient sandbodies on the lee side of the pile rows almost developed intoshore connecting tombolos .
