EDITORIAL¡ ¡ ¡ ¡

SHORTIESInternational wibes!

Since the first Helsinki City Marathon it has been visited by 20 000 foreign runners and the amount of non-Fin-nish participants is growing every year. Last year we had over 60 different nationalities. It is by far the largest

number of foreign visitors in Finnish running events and it proves the attractiveness of the running travel. About every fourth HCM runner is from abroad.

The non-Finnish participants are one of the brightest jewels of HCM. You can see, feel and hear them and that’s great! Tra-ditionally Finns are considered to be very silent and set back in nature and it is lovely to see them spontaneously chatting with total strangers from across the world. It is easy to talk about a shared passion!

What makes runners to come to run in Helsinki in August? Our summer is at its best and the climate is favourable for running. Average +18-22 Celsius degrees is quite nice for visitors coming from for example Southern Europe. Clean air, the route next to the sea and safety of our small country are influencing the decision of many runners. There are also not many marat-hons available in August.

Many visitors thank our friendly staff and volunteers after their visit. We want to help even with smallest issues. As a mid-size city marathon we are able to put effort to first class quality.

13.8. is a real “Super Day of Running”. The same day with the Maxim Helsinki City Marathon we host the Chiquita Mini-marathon for children and families. If you are already in Helsinki in the morning, go watch Minimarathon and witness how the real joy looks like! Perskindol Helsinki Street Run joins the same route with marathon runners for 17 km. We welcome everyone who still does not want to test their limit on marathon but want to enjoy the marathon feeling with all services to join the Street Run!

I wish you great last training kilometres!

\ HCM route goes by the best pieces of Helsinki. My TOP-3 favourites are: Ehrenströ-mintie at 16 km, the wooden bridge at Kaskisaari (about 7,5 km and 33 km), Töölö Bay (about 23,5 km and 41 km). What are your favourite spots?

Markku HaverinenRace Director

\ Make new friends from different countries! You will have running buddies from at least from 63 nationalities. You have a common language – the marathon running!

\ We will have one new refreshment station in addition to previous years. There are 15 of them and also a Maxim Gel Station. Use the station to your benefit and cool down internally and externally. You can motivate yourself by the mantra: “I am making it to the next one”.

RUNNING BENEFITS CHILDREN \ Helsinki City Marathon, Street Run

and Minimarathon are organized by three sports clubs Helsingin Kisa-Veikot, Viipurin Urheilijat, Helsingin Poliisi-Voimailijat and Finnish Athletics Federation. The events are important part of their funding.

“Our club members and supporters volunteer in different roles in these events”, says Ms. Maarit Ovaska from HKV. “By organizing them we enable the training and competition activities for our members from children to adults. We are also proud of making it possible for big amount of people outside our club to join the running events and test their personal limits in healthy sport.”
