The day began with student projects on display at the beginning of every class period.

The projects were based off of STEAMS (Science, Technology, Engineering Arts, Math and Service). Outdoor activities included an engineering challenge competition, community groups like the Alamance county beekeepers, the Waste Water Treatment Facility, PART (Piedmont Area Regional Transit), Tiger Rescue and a local farmers group. School groups had many activities for students to enjoy, including: an environmental trivia game, student-designed pottery pendants, tie dye on a student-designed t shirt to commemorate the day, zero energy games, a photography booth run by our photography students, an earth day poetry contest, a campus clean-up, a school wide recycled bottle cap mural, a dunking booth and more! Hats off to Shelley Casey who puts a ton of effort into making this event a success every year!

Shout Out from Graham High Jason Cheek, Entrepreneurship Instructor

Students in my Entrepreneurship class visited Elon University recently. Students were able to listen to two Elon students who were launching their own businesses while studying at Elon. Our GHS students were able to hear about how these Elon students created their ideas, developed and manufactured their products, and grew their companies. The group was also welcomed to the Innovation House on Elon's campus which promotes a collaborative residential and work environment and encourages innovative sharing of ideas. The group then toured the Elon's Love School of Business and visited the Maker Hub which allows students to have access to 3-D printers as well as other state-of-the-art technology to promote and encourage the development to turning ideas into actual products and creations.

The experience allowed the GHS students to explore the business and entrepreneurship concepts learned in an environment outside the classroom.

It helped students to connect classroom content and the idea that each of them has the ability and opportunity to become the next big entrepreneur!

Shout Out from Eastern High John Stewart, Carpentry & Mike Brumble, Drafting

We were approached by the Children's Museum of Alamance County to design and build a wooden race car track for the children to race cars while at the Museum. We have been working on it for over a month with the design beginning several weeks before the building started. A student here at Eastern designed the track in Drafting class. A Drafting III student printed some parts needed with our 3-D printer. All 3 Carpentry classes have been working on it daily. Students also carved wooden cars for children to race on the track.

Our joint project is almost complete and ready to be delivered to the museum very soon!

Here is a photo of our work-in-progress in the shop.

Shout Out from Newlin Elementary Ashley Westmoreland, Assistant Principal

On Wednesday, April 20th, 8th grade reading students from Broadview Middle School came to Newlin to read aloud picture books to our Pre-K through 2nd grade students! It was wonderful to see many of our former students as well as other Broadview students leading and mentoring our Newlin Wildcats.

Our Broadview partner students did a wonderful job reading and it was evident that they gained confidence through this leadership opportunity at our school!

Special thanks to Frederick Sellars and Christine Boggan for initiating this partnership!

We are hoping to expand upon it during the 2016-17 school year!

Shout Out from Turrentine Middle Sarah Loftin, 8th Grade ELA

My 8th grade ELA classes from the Red Wolves Team at Turrentine Middle School celebrated "National Poetry Month" and "Poem in your Pocket" by going to the Village of Brookwood Retirement Center and sharing their own poetry that they had written and also poems by various famous poets. The students read and gave their poems as "gifts" to the residents. They worked on creating, researching and analyzing poetry. They also practiced their fluency and public speaking before going on the field trip.

Shout Out from Hillcrest Elementary Joyce Bulot, 4th Grade

On Monday, April 18th, Hillcrest Elementary students in Ms. Cheek's and Mrs. Bulot's fourth grade classes at Hillcrest Elementary had a special speaker. Jackie Manuel, member of the 2005 UNC's men's basketball National Championship team, came and shared his experiences, showed his jerseys and NCAA rings!

His message was one of never giving up in the face of adversity, trying your best and the importance of respect and character. The students enjoyed hearing him talk about trying out for the NBA, and how he dealt with being injured and unable to play, then later being cut from another NBA team.

Shout Out from ABSS Student Services

ABSS Student Services partnered with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare to provide a workshop for ABSS teachers entitled Youth Mental Health First Aid USA. The Saturday program was an 8 hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

Check out the TWC News 14 story about the very successful and informative event:

Shout Out for ABSS School Nurses Gaile Bowling, Lead School Nurse

School Nurses: Better Health. Better Learning.TM

National School Nurse Day, May 11, 2016, is a time to celebrate the specialty practice of school nursing. The National

Association of School Nurses (NASN) applauds the contributions school nurses make every day to improve the safety,

health, and academic success of all students.

The theme this year -- School Nurses: Better Health. Better Learning.TM

-- continues to be reflective of the significant roles

school nurses have in the health care in their school communities, as well as in modeling health and resiliency. That

healthy children learn better is a simple truth, and school nurses work to remove barriers to learning. In the United States

more than 73,000 school nurses are stepping up to help students meet new challenges they face today and working to

support education and advance student health. Health, healthy lifestyles and graduation are the goals.

“School nurses collaborate with students, the school community, families, the health care community, the community at

large, and government agencies so that children are in school, healthy, safe, and ready to learn,” said NASN President

Beth Mattey, MSN, RN, NCSN. Adding, “A professional school nurse is needed in every school to care for every child

because school nursing is the foundation for student health.”

Thank you to our ABSS School Nurses!

ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOLS AROUND OUR SCHOOLS SHOUT OUTS Apr. 29, 2016

NASN believes all teachers deserve to have school nurses in their buildings so that teachers can focus on instruction and

students’ individual educational needs; and parents deserve to feel secure that children are safe at school and their health

needs are met every day by specialized school nurses. School nurses have the skills to plan and implement care for

students with chronic and medically complex conditions and prepare school staff to recognize and respond appropriately

to potential emergencies. Prevention is key in school wellness and safety, but planned emergency response and disaster

preparedness is an essential part of the important role school nurses play.

“It is a tremendous privilege to honor our nation’s school nurses as we celebrate National School Nurse Day,” said NASN

Executive Director Donna Mazyck, MS, RN, NCSN. “School nurses influence wellness and disease prevention practices

as change agents in schools and communities.”

The National Association of School Nurses is a non-profit specialty nursing organization, first organized in 1968 and

incorporated in 1977, representing school nurses exclusively. NASN has more than 16,000 members and 50 affiliates,

including the District of Columbia and overseas school nurses. The mission of NASN is to optimize student health and

learning by advancing the practice of school nursing. Please visit us on the Web at www.nasn.org.

Additionally………. In July of 2015, 3 ABSS school nurses completed and passed the National Certification Exam for School Nurses:

Becky Gabrielli, serves EM Yoder and Hawfields Paula Siegel, serves Andrews Jennifer Miles, serves Williams High School

In February of 2016, another ABSS school nurse completed and passed the National Certification Exam for School Nurses: Cindy Costello Cross, serves South Graham Elementary and Alamance Burlington Middle College.

The 5th grade students showed great sportsmanship, played well as a team, and were raining 3-point shots throughout the game. But, in the end, staff won over the students, 22-20. Thank you to the Harmonics for a fantastic half-time performance. And thank you to all of our wonderful families who came out to cheer on the players! Hillcrest Staff - Always Reppin'!
