NWAA has already delivered two of our four key events of the year; the New Talent Awards Night which we reported in our last Plane Talk and our Annual Conference, held on the 12th May 2016 at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel. NWAA’s 3rd Annual Aerospace Conference was very well attended and our members were treated to some excellent presentations that covered global aerospace markets, UK and global economics, impact of the EU referendum, the future of manufacturing and also industry updates from global primes AIRBUS and Leonardo Helicopters (formerly AgustaWestland). As the event grows in strength we have also been able to attract more sponsorship and companies wanting to exhibit which adds to the quality and the energy of the event. I can genuinely say that this was the most difficult event I have ever had to manage as there were so many group and one-to-one discussions happening that it was difficult to get the audience seated – which from my perspective was a great result and demonstrates the value to our members from the networking at NWAA events.

Of course, as soon as one event comes to an end, we start to focus on the next event which, of course, is Farnborough International Air Show 2016. NWAA will be at the exhibition the week before the show preparing the North West’s 210 square meter stand on behalf of the members exhibiting with us. On the morning of Monday 11th July 2016 we will be there early to ensure that representatives from the world’s aerospace industry are given the best possible impression of the capability and experience that exists in the North West’s Aerospace and Defence Sector. This year will of course be special because we are due to see for the first time the end product of so much hard work that has been done in this region. The star of the 5-hour flying display show will be the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter making one of its first flights in Europe which will be testament to the UK’s early commitment to the programme. I am genuinely excited to see this aircraft flying as I know how important it is to our region. I was recently shown around the BAE Systems assembly

facility (S430) at Samlesbury for the rear fuselage of the F-35 aircraft. Terms like world-class are often used too freely, but in this case the F-35 capability that has been developed by BAE Systems in Lancashire is unmistakably world-class. This programme is also supported by a number of high value manufacturing companies located in the North West including RLC Group, Hyde Group, Magellan Aerospace (Blackpool), Pennine Tools Aerospace, Kaman and Teledyne CML. As such, I think Farnborough International Air Show 2016 has the potential to be an exciting show for NWAA and our members and gives us a great opportunity to demonstrate how we have contributed so much to the largest defence programme in the world.

Our fourth key event of the year will be the NWAA Aerospace Ball. This will be the first time NWAA has delivered this event since the banking crises but we think the time is right to come together as an industry and celebrate our achievements. We have booked the Dunkenhalgh Hotel on Friday 7th October 2016 for this Black-Tie / Evening Dress event. This is an opportunity for our members to bring partners and/or customers to a social event where they can network within the aerospace industry, whilst supporting a great charity (Pendleside Hospice) and enjoying an evening of entertainment, music and dance.

NWAA Chairman’s Summer StatementBy Neil McKay

Once again we are preparing for the Farnborough airshow – the biggest event in the aerospace calendar. This year promises to be a magnificent occasion once again with a high expectancy of important business commitments to be delivered across the industry supporting key partnerships, programmes and supply chains.

The run up to Farnborough this year has been dominated by a period of economic and business uncertainty both nationally and globally but some clarity, at least of direction, will be available at the time of the event. This invites the opportunity for us all to get together and consolidate our approach and responses to the crucial industry demands against a clearer political and economic backdrop.

The NWAA’s recent Annual Conference punctuated the collective aerospace global requirement for growth and performance in the supply chain to meet unprecedented demand with rates of 60/month in large civil aerospace driving substantial attainments for rate readiness and consistency of performance at higher volumes than ever before. Coupled

with the significant demand from the military arm for its programmes, particularly JSF, and the entry of C series production in the civil market all adding to an intense global demand picture. These combinations of demand require a strong level of strategic responses from the industry in relation to investment, process development and innovation, among other drivers, in order for the UK supply chain to grow and prosper commensurate with the OEM’s across the next two decades and beyond.

Farnborough will be a timely event to outline these issues and to evaluate the necessary response requirement for the industry as a whole and the supply chain in particular. It is fair to say that organisations like the AGP and ATI see the order of importance that the UK supply chain holds in terms of our national industry response to this global demand characteristic and is the reason why the supply chain and its development are at the highest levels of their strategic agenda when it comes to national policy for the aerospace sector in the UK. For this reason I would expect particular significance relating to manufacturing and the supply chain to gain momentum and criticality in and around the show with resultant impact

on important national programmes such as SC21+ and NATEP with other thrusts influencing skills and capabilities, innovation and technology.

So all in all I see Farnborough as an event not to be missed with significant messages and signals greatly influencing our industry momentum with the resultant impact on what we will all be doing across the summer and beyond to bring about change.

I hope to see as many of you all as possible at this years show so please come and see us on the stand where we will have some organised events or just simply turn up and say hello.

General InformationThe National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) is a £40m Technology Development Programme Derived from a bid by the Aerospace Growth Partnership to the Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative, administered by Finance Birmingham. NATEP is primarily aimed at small and medium sized suppliers to help them develop their own innovative technologies to enhance their capabilities and increase their ability to win new business with higher tier companies anywhere in the world. Programme managed by ADS and delivered regionally by the members of the Federation of Aerospace Alliances, NATEP will support the development of at least 100 projects, creating and safeguarding 1200 jobs in the UK Aerospace supply chain.

Save The Date! The North West NATEP team will be holding a UAV Themed event in September at the University of Central Lancashire and the North West Showcase event has been pencilled in for March 1st 2017. Further details will be published on the NWAA website (www. aerospace.co.uk) when the dates have been confirmed.

Dissemination event hosted by Farnborough NATEP Partners Farnborough Aerospace Consortium held a project dissemination event at the Satellite Applications Catapult in Harwell on 29th April. 7 different consortiums presented the results of their NATEP projects including the team behind the Deployable Antenna for Space project, led by Oxford Space Systems, who later demonstrated the system in the foyer of the centre.

Jenny Bryant and Jeremie Leonard presented on behalf of the team behind the Hybrid Aircraft Thrust Vectoring Propulsion System project. The FAC project is being led by V-TOL Technologies Ltd, with funded partners Flow HD and Scotia Gas Networks and end-user Beagle Technology Group. The NATEP project is enabling VTOL Technologies to develop an optimised, lightweight, ducted fan propulsion system as part of a patented thrust-vectoring mechanism for a breakthrough hybrid RPAS or “drone” to significantly improve its BVLOS [Beyond Visual Line Of Sight] performance, range and endurance.

Eventually, this system will revolutionise industrial asset and infrastructure inspections, not only in the way they are performed today using multi-rotor (quadcopter) platforms, but also the entire inspection process from acquired inspection data through to back office systems. ”Ashley Bryant, Managing & Technical Director for VTOL Technologies said “If it had not been for the NATEP funding, we would not have been able to have assembled the expert consortium nor engage upon this critical propulsion system development programme, which is delivering breakthrough results. We had challenges identifying a viable composites partner and the NATEP mentoring team

P.P. Group sustains its competitive advantage through non-stop development of purpose built IT systems and autonomation

Since 1976 the P.P. Group of Companies has been supplying customers with expertise in fabrication, profiling and processing. From its three sites in Manchester, Salford and St Helens it supplies materials to a wide range of industries, including the aerospace sector. The company places its brand values – people and autonomation – at the core of everything it does.

Sasha Kushnir, group marketing manager explains: “Autonomation allows operators to work harmoniously with their machines and is the inspiration behind our ongoing commitment to technological innovation and corporate

social responsibility. Our brand values have assisted the group to develop a sustainable competitive advantage, which revolves around a purpose built ERP system – called Profile Logic”. In order to help meet the Group’s manufacturing and business objectives, Profile Logic has enjoyed non-stop development for the last 20 years.

Full integration of P.P. Group’s ERP system across all the key manufacturing processes enabled the company to achieve outstanding results - for example in its CAD services and particularly the nesting. Peter McCabe, the group’s managing director explains: “Our highly trained CAD teams create very lean nests, using the latest algorithms of our CAD provider. I demonstrated astonishing material savings that this approach creates, during our presentation, at the NWAA’s Annual Conference in May”.

Coupled with the CAD plate library the nesting achievements are closely linked with the maintenance of the plate stock library. The library automatically reads information from the company’s ERP system giving the P.P. Group increased levels of accountability, traceability and instant information relating to stock requirements. Peter explains: “The way we use our IT systems to manage stock, enables us to have stock turns of between 8 and 10 times a year; against an industry standard

of 3-4 times at best. An added benefit of this functionality is we can conduct full accurate stock takes of inventory valued at up to £500,000 within 3 hours, knowing it is 100% correct complying with accountancy rules”.

The Group has enjoyed astonishing growth over the last ten years, even during the 2008 / 2009 recession. The number of employees increased rapidly from 60 in 2006, to 100 in 2016; of which 16 are apprentices. The tonnage processed doubled from 4000 tons to 8000 tons in the same period of time.

Peter summarises: “I think global manufacturing will become more competitive. It is important in order for UK manufacturing to compete, we must continually invest in technology promoting the autonomation philosophy. Companies need to introduce software integration to enable process automation across all departments; including customers and suppliers. We need to continually invest in people and process development. The need to work collaboratively across the supply chain has never been greater”.

When the grade gets tough Dormer Pramet has launched a new milling grade and also expanded its face milling range for stainless steels.

The M6330 grade has been developed specifically to achieve longer cutting edge durability and reliability in a range of difficult-to-machine materials with and without coolant.

Particularly suited to adverse cutting conditions, including interrupted cutting, the grade is now available with many of Dormer Pramet’s most popular inserts, including the ADMX, HNGX, LNGX, LNMU, OEHT and numerous other ranges.

It promotes greater operational reliability and tool life, with a high resistance to heat-related cracks. This is due to improved abrasion resistance from a new substrate and PVD coating.

The new grade is the latest of many new products recently launched by Dormer Pramet for machining stainless steels.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has also added to its face milling range for stainless steel with new, larger diameter cutters and inserts for greater depths of cut and more powerful machines.

These latest tools include the octagonal OEHT 09 inserts, suitable for unstable conditions and machining fragile components in stainless steels and soft steels up to depths of 5mm.

The versatile tool can be used for both roughing and finishing operations, providing increased tooling economy and significant savings on machine time.

In a recent product test, machining a piece of steel (3900mm x 3200mm) with coolant, the OEHT performed the roughing and finishing operation in 52

minutes. A competitor tool performed the same task in the same conditions in 252 minutes with roughing and finishing operations done separately.

A new range of round inserts, REHT 24, for face and copy milling and the XEHT 09 wiper inserts add to the options available. All can be clamped into the same milling cutter, further increasing versatility and cost efficiency.

A wide assortment of new milling cutters, ranging from 80 - 315mm diameter, is also available. Internal coolant delivery is supported by each cutter, including for large diameters. For further information, please visit: www.dormerpramet.com

Teledyne CML Composites passes NADCAP audit with zero non-conformance findingsAdvanced composites manufacturer Teledyne CML Composites has completed a NADCAP audit on its Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) practices with no major or minor Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) identified.

Teledyne CML Composites identified the need for NADCAP accreditation for

Composites and NDT in January 2014 to support the current customer base and to meet the long-term growth ambitions of the company. Ten months later, the company was awarded NADCAP accreditation.

General Manager John Toner explained, “Following the decision to seek NADCAP accreditation, we identified the necessary personnel and equipment we would need, along with a lot of hard work which enabled us to secure our initial goal very quickly. We are pleased with the re-accreditation by NADCAP and thrilled with the style that our NDT team has achieved this. They are a credit to the business and an indication of the importance that we place on the parts we manufacture for our customers.”

Teledyne CML Composites plans to continue its investment in people and equipment throughout the business with the NDT function a key focus. In 2016, the number of NDT operators is set to double, and operators will receive training to uplift their individual NDT qualifications. In addition, the footprint of the NDT department is set to increase as Teledyne CML Composites prepares to receive automated robotic inspection equipment.

Teledyne CML Composite’s performance during this process is just one example of the company’s commitment to providing quality parts and components for multiple industries and its dedication to continue meeting and exceeding customer standards.

Developing Bespoke Aerospace Tooling with 3D Printing for the Airbus A320 neoInnovative thinking from Safran Nacelle’s Manufacturing Manager Andy Crosland and FDM Digital’s Technical Director Graeme Bond solves Airbus rate production problem using 3D printing technology.

Andy Crosland says “When we began the A320neo journey our vision was firmly set on the future production rates.

A clear objective for this was to ensure that we error proofed every operation.

One of the early problems we encountered was accurate drilling and countersinking of the Pre-cooler Scoop to the IFS panel. The standard process is to countersink a hole using a “Vanmar Microstop Cutter Cage”, this tool sits flat on the surface of the component when being used. However, the Pre-cooler Scoop has a complex 3D curved surface

so the Vanmar would not sit flat, thus causing a problem for the operator.

The results were that sometimes the countersinks would be too shallow or too deep, or not at the correct angle and the operation was so risky that only one operator would voluntarily carry it out.

I myself have a passion for innovation and I decided we needed a more creative approach to the solution. An idea came to me that we could 3D print a new drill guide alignment end for the Vanmar with the 3D curvature of the Pre-cooler built in. I had recently visited FDM Digital Solutions and met Technical Director Graeme Bond, who has a background in jig and tool design, we arranged to meet and together we came up with a conceptual idea that allowed a repeatable production solution. Collaboratively we designed a 3D printed shroud that covers the whole of the Pre-cooler aperture and at each countersink position there is a recess for the Vanmar to be aligned at the correct drill angle allowing a repeatable drill and countersink operation to be done at once. FDM Digital Solutions engaged with multiple two-way visits engaging shop floor production operatives with 3D printing technology.”

Graeme Bond says “Through various tests and tool trials, together we found the optimum solution for Safran Nacelle’s problem. Educating and engaging the team at Safran Nacelles in the approach of design and manufacturing freedoms using 3D printing, and being ready to accept a technology to change traditional manufacturing techniques, was key to the success of this production solution”.Andy says “One of the major benefits of using this tool is that we have had no countersinking issues on the Pre-cooler scoop and all the operators can use it. Time wise the tool saves us about an hour on each unit and makes the process capable rather than incapable.”

Graeme Bond says “Innovation and speed to market with 3D printing gives total design freedom allowing unlimited design possibilities of any special purpose jigs / Tooling for areas of aircraft manufacturing. FDM Digital Solutions have the in house 3D Cad design consultancy and engineering knowledge to turn conceptual cost / time saving ideas into reality which have huge benefits to companies.”

Hycrome Aerospace LaunchesOver recent years Hycrome’s business activity has always been an even balance between both the Aerospace & Oil & Gas/Power Generation sectors. Whilst the latter continues to be a core strategy to Hycrome’s business development, the aerospace sector is growing at such a rapid pace that Hycrome have focused special attention and made significant investment recently in this area. Coupled with this investment Hycrome Aerospace Ltd has now been incorporated alongside the existing company to deal specifically with Aerospace Surface Treatments and Manufacture.

2016 saw the start of installation of a fully automated Tartaric Sulphuric Anodise

(TSA) line at Hycrome Aerospace. TSA is a “greener” alternative to the current method of Chromic Anodise which will be subject to EU REACH Regulation restrictions in mid-2017. Many future models of airliners will use TSA and with projected build rates on the Airbus A350 alone set to reach 10 per month by 2018 Hycrome Aerospace will be well placed to cope with the imminent demand for this process.

April 2016 saw the completion and commissioning of Hycrome Aerospace’s latest Fully Automated Paint System with 48 Metre length track. With the current line working 24/7 investment in a second system was essential to free up capacity to allow the business to grow.

Hycrome Aerospace are AS9100 Rev C approved and also hold NADCAP in 5 disciplines – Thermal Coating,

Chemical Processing, Heat Treatment, Non-Destructive Testing & Surface Enhancement.

the VERICUT DVD for companies using the CNC optimisation and simulation software or from the CGTech website, and it will play Reviewer files on all versions of Windows desktop PCs or Windows compatible handheld tablets, as well as Apple iPads.

Although it is freely available the 3D Reviewer is a very powerful tool that can also help improve communication with customers, suppliers, and anyone else that can benefit from having access to a 3D simulation. Anyone can play the 3D simulation forward and backward to see material being removed or replaced. Error messages and NC program text is highlighted when a collision on the stock or fixture is selected. Cutting conditions and a tool path line display can be optionally shown. The user can rotate, pan and zoom and the cut stock can be measured using a variety of measurement tools.

As well as handheld digital devices it is also possible to download the software and the Reviewer file on to a USB memory stick so that it can be sent to customers anywhere around the world,

or share the file simulation during a video conference. In addition to the 3D simulation, the user can embed traditional reports in PDF format that can be easily accessed from within the app.

While creating reports is a necessity for any machine shop, the Reviewer allows customers to remove paper from the shop floor and adopt a digital method, either using Windows or Apple. With the depth of information available companies that are running first-off parts during the nightshift no longer need the programmer to be there, all the information is contained within the simulated Reviewer file. The VERICUT operator has always been able to do this and now the machine operator can as well with all the information about the machining process collated.

Buck & Hickman lifts the lid on industrial consumables managementIndustrial consumables management and consolidating industrial suppliers were some of the key topics explored by Buck & Hickman, the UK’s leading distributor of tools, maintenance and health & safety products, at the recent North West Aerospace Alliance’s annual conference.

As one of the keynote speakers at the conference, Scott Bairstow, Aerospace Key Account Manager at Buck & Hickman opened his session by outlining the organisation’s work within the aerospace sector, drawing on its 185 year heritage supporting manufacturing and providing practical inventory management solutions to some of the UK’s most prestigious aerospace organisations.

In line with the event’s focus: Implementing the strategic vision for UK Aerospace, Scott concentrated on one of the common issues experienced by many of Buck & Hickman’s clients – industrial consumables management, outlining the key challenges and the

costs associated with procurement. To combat this issue, Buck & Hickman has developed a number of vendor managed inventory services including InvendTM and InsiteTM which Scott outlined during the conference. Discussing both services in-depth, Scott explained the host of functionality and user benefits associated with Buck & Hickman’s industrial vending service, InvendTM, which has been designed to improve control and visibility of MROconsumables, and can typically help customers achieve between 25% and 40% reduction in consumable spend. For those looking to transfer complete

control of procurement to an externalsupplier, Scott discussed InsiteTM which provides a dedicated branch on site, providing access to a range of services, technical expertise and OEM support.

Scott explained: “The session was a fantastic opportunity to meet with industry professionals, share ideas and also showcase the value adding services Buck & Hickman has to offer, with the focus on the strategic vision for UK Aerospace, industrial consumables management seemed an appropriate subject, as we often find that customers will have strategies in place for other areas of the business, but consumables procurement management is often overlooked and this is an area where huge cost savings can be made.

MRO procurement has proved a major challenge for many of our customers as the lack of visibility and the inability to ensure compliance with contracts is particularly problematic. We were keen to showcase the ways in which Buck & Hickman can support aerospace organisations and streamline and optimise MRO procurement in the industry, assisting them achieve their strategic visions for the future.”

Midland Aerospace Takes-Off With MAXX Machining from OPEN MINDJust over 10 years ago, Midland Aerospace invested in a 5-axis DMG machining centre and OPEN MIND’s hyperMILL CAM software. A decade later and the astounding growth at Midland have seen the arrival of an additional five 5-axis machine tools and an extra three seats of hyperMILL.

In the last three years, the manufacturer of aero engine and wing structure components has invested £2m in new equipment and seen turnover growth of 20%. The growth forecast is set to continue with the company now being one of the 40 elite aerospace businesses working under the UK Government’s new SIG (Sharing In Growth) Program.

Alluding to the machine tool investments, Midland’s Managing Director, Mr Eamon

Lyons says: “5-axis machines are a necessity for leading aerospace suppliers and to ensure our machines run at their optimum, we invested in hyperMILL. Our initial decision was based on two factors. Firstly, a leading F1 team committed huge resources to a CAM feasibility trial where OPEN MIND came out on top by some distance. Secondly, we wanted to protect our machine investment with 5-axis software that guaranteed collision avoidance – OPEN MIND was the only company that could meet our needs.”

Since the initial investment, both the 5-axis machines and CAM seats have increased. Now using four hyperMILL seats, Midland can develop, prototype and batch manufacture parts for customers with anything from 50 to 100+ parts being programmed with hyperMILL every month. More recently Midland trialled a new MAXX Machining module from OPEN MIND at the AMRC on one of its titanium structural parts. The new MAXX machining package reduced cycle time for each of the six 18mm deep pockets from 40 minutes to just 3. The complex part that previously required 40 hours of machining is now finished in less than 10 hours. The MAXX roughing

module trebled the recommended feed rate and almost doubled the speed rates to deliver a productivity gain of 280%. Despite the change of parameters, tool life was improved from 30 minutes to over 2 hours.

Since this trial, more features have been incorporated into MAXX Machining such as ‘5-axis Tangent Plane’, a feature that works with barrel cutters to increase tool ‘step-over’ rate by 5-10 times to instantly reduce rough machining cycle times by an additional 75% and finish machining times by 90%. For Midland Aerospace, the early indications are a complete success. As Midland Aerospace Programmer, Mr Ian Jones comments: “Up to 90% of our machining time can be spent finishing tight corner radii in pockets, as we have previously had issues with chatter and miss-match marks. By using the Tangent Plane feature and special tools, we now have 6-7mm of the tool in contact with the part. This improves the finish, eliminates chatter and miss-match marks and it significantly improves machining times.”
