Together We Can Do BetterTogether We Can Do Better

EditorialWell, we're holding on! Lebanon, that is,is holding on! Three Newsletter issues ina row, without a major crisis.crisis, that is! Either the country issettling down and its politicians arematuring… or our Newsletters are beingrolled out too fast!Of course we spent 6 months without acabinet. So what? The caretakers werecaretaking all right! And nobody felt thedifference. Hardly! We even reachedconsensus on a cabinet Policy Statement in a record 2 weeks! Wow! As tothe contents… it's the same old same. But really, what does it matter?Since when have our Cabinets hung their Policy Statement on the wall andticked off points (their promised achievements) one by one upon theiractual implementation? Policy Statements are for the files. And the filesare very tolerant, and don't mind their contents. And by the time thisNewsletter goes to press, our elected representatives will have met and, most probably, unanimously put their fingerprints to the document, in thename of national accord and so on. Of course, there will be the few heroeswho, in the face of TV cameras will declare their “reservations” about theoddities and contradictions in the Statement… but they will sign. And theirreservations will go to file. And, as stated above, the files are very tolerant. They won't mind. And life goes on in this amazing Lebanon of ours. And the LDBA continues to do what it was meant to do, putting togetherbusiness people in Lebanon and the Netherlands. Acting with the fullsupport of the Netherlands Embassy staff, and their counterparts at theMinistries of Economy and ForeignAffairs in the Hagues (whom we thankfor the excellent reception and arrangements during the recent TradeMission to the Netherlands). We also take the opportunity to welcome the new Ambassador, H.E. Herode Boer, who within days from landing in Beirut, has pulled up his shirtsleeves, and jumped in with us! We wish him and Mrs. De Boer a pleasantstay in our lovely country, and a productive tenure.

Ambassador'sAddress

There's a saying in Dutch that you can feel like “acat in an unfamiliar warehouse”. That's a feelingwell-known to every Ambassador arriving at hisnew post. In order to overcome this feeling, he orshe will try to familiarize him or herself with thepeople and their leaders, their history, the localculture, cuisine, hobbies and habits, and his or herdiplomatic colleagues. Ambassadors are prettymuch all the same in this respect, so I have notdeviated from this well-established custom.

I arrived at a highly opportune moment, one at which Lebanon was entering a newphase of its development, namely after elections and during the formation of a newgovernment. This presented me with the opportunity to observe quite directly andclosely many of the challenges facing this beautiful country. There were alsounexpected surprises, such as the complaining, by many Lebanese, about thelengthy duration of the government formation. In my view, it all went quitesmoothly and certainly very quickly: in my country such formations have anaverage duration of some five months, with an absolute record, in 1977, of 208 (!)days.

Now that the new government has been installed, we will undoubtedly all observewith much interest the way in which it tackles the problems that lie ahead. There is agreat diversity of issues to be dealt with, ranging from disarmament and electionlegislation, to reviving the agricultural sector and cleaning the sadly pollutedcoastline and cities. And wouldn't it be wonderful if Beirut were to regain itsfamous position as the peaceful hinge between theArab and European world?

My country, the Netherlands, fulfills a similar role as the “gateway to Europe” and,in that sense, our two countries have much in common. They are small, outwardlooking and specialised in trade and logistics. The home territory being the size it is,they are necessarily obliged to need to seek a major part of their income abroad. Both countries, moreover, have well-developed services and tourism sectors. And atthe same time, they are well-aware that all this comes at a price. I refer not only tothe history of both countries, and particularly to the more recent tragedies that havestruck Lebanon, but also to new challenges we face, such as the aforementionedenvironmental ones.

Again, during one's first weeks at a new post, one tries to familiarize him or herselfwith the host country that is to be their home for the next years. There are alwaysthings you have seen before and, fortunately, there are always surprises too. In thecase of Lebanon, the biggest and most agreeable surprise to me was to find that thereis a thriving business community, amongst which the interest for the Netherlands isas pleasantly warm as it is extensive. The Lebanese Dutch BusinessAssociation, byits sheer existence, by the seminars and workshops it organises, and all the otheractivities it undertakes, is an important party to thank for this. Through all itsinitiatives, the LDBAhas earned a reputation for itself, second to none.

The LDBA could therefore well be the most important vehicle to intensifycooperation between our two countries. We should be able to touch base where itcomes to services, to logistics and to new science and technology, particularly in thearea of the environment. Though the prospects for the Copenhagen Climate ChangeConference may not be as good as we would wish, this should not withholdindividual countries from taking immediate steps, if only to improve livingconditions for their own people. With more than 16 million people in my smallcountry, the Dutch cannot wait to take measures in various areas until they havebeen agreed upon by all. The same applies to Lebanon, where the living densitycompares with the Netherlands. My Embassy would highly appreciate to joinforces with the LDBAfor the benefit of both.

In conclusion, I would say that the future looks bright and that our countries haveample opportunity to profit from the chances that present themselves in theeconomic field and in many other sectors.

I have just arrived and I intend to stay here as long as reasonably possible. In thattime, I sincerely hope to build upon the excellent cooperation that the LDBAand myEmbassy have established over the years. Let us reach out and seize thoseopportunities.

Famous Dutch Products

The Story of a Young Dutchman, and a Famous Brand:In 1915, Pharmacy student C.J. Jansen traveled to Switzerland apprenticing himself to pharmacist A. Thaler in St. Gallen. The fair skinnedDutchman had a habit of taking long hikes in the beautiful Swiss mountains and countryside. And that cost him severe sunburns and blisters inhis feet. Not to worry, said his tutor, Thaler, I have the best remedy for that. And he produced a balm called 'Congo Salbe', long used by themonks of St. Gallen, and Jansen was amazed by the result and went on to learn the recipee. When he returned to The Netherlands he tried tosell this 'wonder ointment' to a Dutch pharmacist in Apeldoorn. But, luckily for him, the pharmacist turned him down. “A remedy for SUNBURNin good old Holland?” said the Apeldoorn pharmacist. “You must be helemaal gek!” (Totally crazy). So Jansen decided to produce the ointment himself, and started his own factory under the name 'the Dutch Factory of PharmaceuticalProducts'. And after an immediate success, and since his product was mainly used for baby care, he increased the range by developing otherbaby care products such as talcum powder, oil and small (baby size) soap. And thus was born the still-going-strong balm: “Zwitsal”. (The word is a combination of the Dutch translation for 'Switzerland' and the word'Salve').The company expanded over the years, and eventually merged with Koninklijke Zwanenberg-Organon (Royal Zwanenberg-Organon) and oneyear before ZWITSAL was taken over by AKZO, Mr. Jansen retired from the business, leaving the picture of his baby daughter (which stillappears in the product promotion pamphlets- although updated) as his legacy to the business he had started decades ago.The ZWITSAL lay out was restyled and the introduction of the famous yellow colour became a permanent feature.1998 saw the introduction of the ZWITSAL KIDS. 2004 saw the introduction of the ZWITSAL MAMA. And so on!ZWITSAL is now the most famous baby care brand in The Netherlands.

Lebanese businesses and CSR

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is a growing trend in the modern business world, whereby major corporations subsidize social activities that

benefit their societies, and support charity organizations, local sports clubs, theatres, arts and the like. In the west, this trend has been encouraged by

governments through tax deductions and other incentives. Not so in Lebanon! Corporations that exercise CSR do it out of the goodness of their hearts,

so to speak. It is therefore very pleasing to see smaller Lebanese businesses engage in CSR, an example of which is

is a project implemented by Semsom restaurants, in collaboration with Souk el Tayeb,

to focus on Lebanese villages. Focus means that every month, a Lebanese village will be highlighted at Semsom Sassine and City Mall.

Plenty of info about that village will be all over the place. A special plat du jour from the village will be featured every Wednesday.

Finally, mounet from this village will be available with all proceeds going to the producers of this village. Flyers are also available with

all info needed to spend a couple of days at the village. This project reflects the diverse Lebanese rural heritage by bringing it back to its

roots and invites the Lebanese to rediscover the true essence of the land of the cedar Already featured were: Hammana, Jezzine,

Batroun, Douma, Falougha, Rachaya al Wadi… and the list goes on.

.

Over the years, Dunkin' Donuts Lebanon has become known for its social engagement

via awareness campaigns and sincere dedication to various sectors in need of public support. This year, Dunkin'

Donuts Lebanon decided to highlight the efforts of Lebanon's forgotten heroes who remain actively committed to

saving not only the environment, but also the lives of people in danger. These heroes are the volunteers of Beirut

firefighters' brigade. With the number of fires in Lebanon increasing year upon year, the firefighters' task has become

more challenging and risky, especially due to the lack of equipment and tools needed by the firefighters to adequately

protect both people and the environment. In honor of these heroes, Dunkin' Donuts Lebanon has decided to support

and praise their work by launching the “Support our heroes!” campaign. To celebrate the launch of the campaign,

Dunkin' Donuts invited the media and journalists to attend a live workshop on fire safety. This event was held by one

of the Beirut Firefighters in Dunkin' Donuts Zalka where they learned important information about the Beirut Fire

Brigade as well as tips on fire safety at home, in the office and the car. From mid-October until the end of November

2009, Dunkin' Donuts customers were able to donate 1,000 L.L. to the Beirut firefighters' brigade with each purchase

of 1 small Dunkalatte or Dunkaccino and 1 Donut. Moreover, fundraising boxes were displayed in major Dunkin'

Donuts branches to give the opportunity for more funds to be collected. Upon receipt of the amount, the Beirut Fire Department will purchase severely

needed equipment that will enable them to better save and preserve the environment and thus, to benefit the society at large.
