Message from
This past month has been very educational for me, and, I hope,
for many of you. First of all, I attended the two-day carbonate school
taught by Dr. Jeffrey Dravis. It was good to refresh my memory of
some of the aspects of carbonate geology that had become fuzzy over
the years and to get caught up on some of the latest thinking regarding
the principles of carbonate geology. I have heard nothing but positive
feedback from those who attended. I’d like to thank Dr. Dravis for
teaching it and Bill Meaney for arranging it. The course notes alone
were worth the cost of the school.
Secondly, I attended our monthly meeting the focus of which
was a presentation on mudrock reservoirs by AAPG Distinguished
Lecturer Dr. Jeffrey May. Having very little experience with mudrock
reservoirs, this was very informative. I’d like to thank Dr. May for
“continuing my education”.
The Mock Dig at the Red River Revel was again a big success.
Carrie Salinas and Dawn Standridge did
their usual great, and sometimes
thankless, job. It’s a tough job, so thank
them personally the next time you see
them. I’d also like to thank Stafford
Comegys and Security Exploration for
their many years of financial support of
Larry Frizzell
Thanks for making
this year’s
Mock Dig a
success
CONNECTEDAT EVERY TOUCH POINT
The IHS suite of geoscience software—which includes IHS Petra®, Kingdom®, LOGarc™ and GeoSyn™—is designed to seamlessly connect to the industry’s leading source of critical Oil & Gas information, eliminating the need to move data manually from source to source and project to project. With this powerful new combination, users can streamline data transfer, enhance database performance and simplify project sharing. The result? Work?ows that connect like never before.
Connected work?ows mean that IHS customers spend less time looking for data and more time looking for the next big opportunity. It’s just one of the many ways that IHS helps to advance the decisions that advance the Oil & Gas industry.

the Mock Dig. Stafford has been sponsoring the dig for as long as I can
remember.
This month Greg Zerrahn has arranged for Dr. Ernest Mancini
to address us on Smackover microbial carbonate reservoirs a very
timely topic. These reservoirs are prolific producers in the current
Smackover play in southwestern Alabama. Make your reservations
early.
On the 14th of November the SGS, in conjunction with Bossier
Parish Community College, LOGA and LSU-S, will sponsor a
screening of the award-winning documentary film Switch. The movie
features past AAPG president and current
director of the Bureau of Economic Geology
and professor at the University of Texas, Dr.
Scott Tinker, as he travels the world exploring
the various sources of energy and their
potential for future development. The movie
has been screened in most of the major cities
across the nation, but not yet in this area. The film is both entertaining
and educational.
There will be a reception after the screening to provide an
opportunity for discussion about energy and its role in our future.
Information regarding the screening will be sent out to the membership
prior to the screening. Please make an effort to attend and invite your
friends as well – it is free. For more information about the film, go to
www.SwitchEnergyProject.com or www.SGS1.org .

as a petroleum exploration geologist preparing for offshore lease sales
off Alaska and California for Cities Service Oil Company in Denver,
Colorado (1974- 76). He was appointed Associate Professor in 1980,

Board of Trustees at the University of Alabama and Professor Emeritus
in 2010.
He served as State Geologist and Oil & Gas Supervisor for
Alabama from 1982-96 and as Interim Director of the School of Mines
and Energy Development at the University of Alabama from 1988-89.
During his tenure as State Geologist, the Geological Survey of

Abstract
“Reservoir Characterization and Modeling of Upper Jurassic Microbial Carbonate Reservoirs,
Northern Gulf of Mexico”
In the northern Gulf of Mexico, Upper Jurassic Smackover
carbonate ramp, shallow-water microbial buildups developed on
paleotopographic paleohighs (Paleozoic crystalline basement or
Jurassic salt features) or on antecedent depositional topography. These
microbialites included calcimicrobes, red algae, foraminifera, sponges,
echinoids and bivalves and attained a thickness of 58 m. Buildups were
best developed on a hard substrate during a rise in sea level under
initial zero to low background sedimentation rates in low -energy and
fluctuating environmental conditions. Extensive microbial growth
occurred in response to available accommodation space. The demise of
the microbialites corresponded to changes in environmental conditions
associated with an overall regression of the sea.
Smackover carbonates are overlain by Haynesville (Buckner)
anhydrite or argillaceous beds and unconformably overlie Norphlet
sandstone beds or Paleozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Smackover lithofacies have been identified from the study of wireline
logs, cores and thin sections. For buildups on Paleozoic paleohighs,

these facies include, in descending order, (1) peritidal and lagoonal
dolomudstone and dolowackestone, (2) shallow subtidal nearshore and
shoal ooid dolograinstone and oncoidal and peloidal dolopackstone,
and (3) subtidal peloidal doloboundstone. For buildups on antecendent
depositional paleotopography, these facies include, in descending
order, (1) peritidal silty lime mudstone and dolomudstone to
wackestone, (2) shallow subtidal nearshore ooid, peloidal, bioclastic
grainstone to wackestone, (3) subtidal fossiliferous lime mudstone, (4)
subtidal microbially-influenced peloidal lime mudstone to packstone,
(5) subtidal peloidal thrombolite boundstone, and (6) transgressive
subtidal silty lime mudstone and dolomudstone and wackestone.
Although the principal control on reservoir architecture and
geographic distribution of Smackover reservoirs is the fabric and
texture of the depositional facies, diagenesis (chiefly dissolution and
dolomitization) is a significant factor that preserves and enhances
reservoir quality. Porosity in the microbial boundstone facies is a
mixture of primary shelter and fenestral porosity overprinted by
secondary dolomite intercrystalline and vuggy porosity. Porosity in the
nearshore/shoal grainstone and packstone facies is a combination of
depositional interparticle and diagenetic moldic and dolomite
intercrystalline porosity. The higher reservoir quality and productivity
of the microbial boundstone is attributed to the higher permeability and
greater interconnectivity of this facies because of the nature of the pore
system (pore topology and geometry and pore-throat size distribution)
instead of the amount of porosity. Pore-throat size distribution in the
intercrystalline - and vuggy-dominated pore system of the dolomitized
and leached boundstone is characterized by a higher percentage of
large-sized pores having larger pore throats.
A successful exploration and development strategy to locate
and define the distribution of reservoir quality microbial carbonate
facies starts with detecting a petroleum trap. Initially, the identification
of combination structural and stratigraphic traps through the use of 3-D
seismic data proved highly successful. Petroleum traps consisted of

Paleozoic basement paleohighs and favorable microbial boundstone
and shoal grainstone facies that experienced depositional and
diagenetic (dissolution and dolomitization) processes conducive to
preserve and enhance reservoir quality. The development of recently
discovered fields in the updip Smackover trend ofthe onshore
northeastern Gulf of Mexico area has shown that this exploration
strategy requires refinement. The petroleum trap for these fields is
stratigraphic and the associated reservoirs are microbial boundstone
characterized chiefly by vuggy pores and nearshore grainstone
characterized chiefly by moldic pores resulting from leaching.
