S hes been pen ningstories and poems sinceshe was just seven,
andnow Shreya Nair has anational short story com-petition to add to
hergrowing list of accomplishments.
The Epsom Normal
Primary School studentrecently won the juniorcategory of Puffin
Books70th birthday short storycompetition.
Shre ya, a ye ar 6student, says she was really excited andhappy
when she foundout she had won.
S he describes h eraward-winning entry,titled The Book Bird, asa
mix of fantasy andreality.
Renowned childrens
author and competition judge Dawn McMillanagrees.
The story weavestogether real life andfantasy the magicalworld
of Puffin Land, theeveryday world of school,with the problem of
bullying at its core.
This story made me
feel good, she says. As a reward for
S hreyas eff orts theschool received 70 booksfor its
library.
Its a great range, itsbeen wonderful for us,librarian Denise
Morrissays.
S heryas story h asbeen published on thePuffin website and
willbe broadcast on ClassicHits FMs Thats theStory.
More than 500 manu-
scripts were received forthe competition fromhopeful young
writersaround New Zealand.
In addition to thelibrary books, Sheryareceived for herself
an
Apple iPod Touch, a puf-fin doll, and a cheque for$150 from
Classic HitsFM.
