Ministry Update In the midst of this public health crisis we have discov-ered that The Good Samaritan Ministry is able to trans-cend restrictions and borders! Although we have needed to suspend our community peace gatherings and our recovery ministry at Monica’s Kitchen, we are still present in the community as a beacon of hope. Having implemented new safety procedures, we have expanded the hours of our food pantry. Your generosity and goodwill have helped us to keep our promise to provide food to anyone living with hunger. In addition, we have replaced face-to-face contact with friendly phone calls to our food pantry guests and other neighbors who live on the edge of despair. In those calls, Good Samaritan volunteers have offered comfort to those living with worry and fear. We have also been blessed to receive the precious gift of gratitude from folks who can’t believe that they are important enough to be remembered by us. In these difficult days when tomorrow is filled with uncertainty and everything that once seemed solid starts to weaken, it is good to be reminded that love never fails.

A Message from Fr. Paolo Dear Brothers and Siters in Christ,
In today’s Gospel we hear the account of the famous Emmaus’ story: two disciples left Jerusalem disappointed and confused by what had happened. Jesus, their friend and teacher, the one in whom they had placed all their hopes, had died and was buried. Everything seemed over. Even what the women and some of their friends had told them early that morning – vision of angels and Jesus’ body that was missing – didn’t help or rekindle their hope but puzzled them even more.
The two disciples left Jerusalem, their friends, their hopes of a new life and a different society. They said: “it’s over” and moved away to start a new phase of your life. “Their eyes were prevented from recognizing him” (Lk 24:16) because their hearts were closed off and weren’t expecting anything from Jesus anymore. That’s why they couldn’t recognize Jesus when he appeared to them along the way and started to talk with them.
We often are like these two disciples: at times we feel betrayed or disappointed by God or by people and so just don’t expect anything from them. At times we feel that we’re away from Jesus and he doesn’t care about us while he’s actually walking with us and speaking to us. It’s just that our “eyes” are closed and we can’t see or recognize Him.
The story of Emmaus continues: the two disciples recognize Jesus when he breaks the bread at dinner table. The two disciples started off disillusioned and frustrated, incapable of really “seeing” Jesus. Jesus spent the whole afternoon with them, speaking with them to crack their hearts open and let the light of his loving presence shine in the darkness of their souls. At dinner table their hearts were ready to recognize him. He broke the bread and “with that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.” (Lk 24:31)
Even when our hearts are closed off and our eyes are “prevented from recognizing Him”, Jesus doesn’t give up on us. He continues to “speak” to us to open our eyes and enable us to see and recognize Him. Jesus speaks to us in prayer and the sacraments, in the Scriptures, through the
living testimony of people around us and in many other ways. Let us be open to hear his voice, a sking Him to reveal Himself to us.
