BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

4 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS AUGUST 2012

The day had yet to begin and it was ap-proximately 4:00 am when preparation to transport a child from Kansas City, MO

to St. Louis, MO commenced. The lead driver for this trip started the routine safety check that marked the beginning of each trip. Carefully checking oil level, tire pressure, headlights, seat belts and so forth to insure the Ararat Shrine transportation van was ready for the task that lies at the core of what a Mason and a Shriner are pledged do; to come to the aid of children who are not able to aid themselves. As he qui-etly worked he is joined by his co-driver and a fledgling member of the Hospital Transporta-tion team who would be making his first trans-port trip as an observer and trainee. Together, the three men completed preparations, held a brief discussion about the tasks of the day and then departed the parking lot of Ararat Shrine heading for Blue Springs, MO where they would make their pick up for the day. This day would only require them to transport one child and her mother but other trips had seen the van full of children and parents who needed the medical aid provided by the members of Shri-ners International.

The veteran drivers were calm as they pulled into the agreed upon meeting spot where their passengers would meet them. They ex-plained to the new man that it was faster and more convenient for all involved to pick up pa-tients along the way rather than gathering at one location since the Shrine held responsibility for a very wide portion of the state. Missouri is a large place and a common sense routing made the process efficient and convenient.

Within a few minutes the patient and her mother arrived; introductions were made and the entire team was loaded into the van, strapped in and rolling. With the final desti-nation of today’s journey being the Shriners Children’s Hospital in St. Louis a lot of ground must be covered. (233 miles one way) While the two drivers sat up front and concentrated on transporting their passengers safely and on time, the new man sat with the passengers. He chatted with them and worked to keep the tone light. His job was to learn the route, observe the transport process and prepare himself to drive when called upon. In the course of chatting with the passengers he learned much about the people and how the men of the Ararat Shrine

made a difference in the lives of children one patient at a time.

As the conversation at the back of the van went on, the drivers were carefully guiding the van to its scheduled stop in Kingdom City which marked the approximate half-way point of the journey. Here they would re-fuel the van and take a quick break to allow the passengers to stretch their legs. As it takes over an hour and a half to reach Kingdom City, the day has now dawned clear and warm. After making the fuel stop, the drivers change places and once again, are rolling east toward St. Louis. The passen-gers settle in to a quiet relaxed manner as they are now thinking about what lies ahead. The drivers have increased vigilance as traffic be-gins to increase with every mile traveled. Rush hour for the St. Louis metro region is underway and the drivers joke that rush hour in St. Louis really never stops.

Around 8:45 am the van arrives at the hos-pital, the patient and her mother are shown to the clinic and the drivers start the process of signing in at the hospital and preparing the van for the return trip. This is the hardest part of the trip for the drivers since they now relinquish control of the patient. All that can be done is to wait until the patient is released and ready to leave. The veteran drivers show the new man around the hospital. It is a place of wonder where children laugh and play while being fit-ted for new arms and legs. Other children cruise the halls in wheelchairs while wearing a halo attached to their heads. The halo has a chain in the center that connects to a frame on the chair. This provides an upward pressure that assists in keeping their spines in better alignment as they progress through their treatments. Many other children are being treated for a variety of ortho-pedic challenges and all seem to be upbeat and happy. Men from around the country are scat-tered throughout the hospital wearing the Fez that marks them as Shriners. Each Fez denotes a different place, Kansas City, Memphis, Little Rock, Omaha and many others. Each team has brought children to St. Louis for treatment and

each team now waits patiently for their pas-sengers to return. Then they can once again perform their task of transporting their charges safely to their homes.

The Kansas City team arrived at the hospi-tal just before 9:00 am and it is now 6:00 pm. They have waited through the day growing more concerned for their patient as time ticks by. The young lady underwent a surgical proce-dure and as sometime happens, complications arise. The procedure was more extensive than originally expected and the patient struggled with complications from the anesthesia. While all of these problems can be handled, one ele-ment that is consumed is time. The men finally accept responsibility for their charge at 6:30 pm but more needs to be done. Medications need to be picked up at a local pharmacy and ice bags for swelling of the incision need to be refilled. It is after 7:00 pm when the team pulls out of St. Louis and the patient is still struggling with nausea. Her desire to go home is strong and her willingness to face the return trip is admirable. However, the incision is justifiably tender and she must keep the limb elevated. In this case having a third member of the team proved ben-eficial as the drivers were contending with rout-ing problems due to poor traffic conditions and an intense rush hour in an unfamiliar location. The new man worked with the patient to insure she had a way to keep the operated on arm el-evated and the ice packs were refreshed on a regular basis. The patient and her mother were understandably tired and needing the relaxation a quiet and peaceful ride across the state might provide. In a short while the team was beyond the worst of rush hour traffic and rolling west-ward across Missouri toward home. The routine fuel stop in Kingdom City was uneventful with a refill of ice bags and a quick stretch of the legs. Shortly after 10:45 pm the van pulled into the drop off location and a weary patient was assisted to a waiting car for the short ride home and to the rest so desperately needed.

Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transpor-

tation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of June!

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

The Recorder’s Corner BY DAN SMOTHERS

How great is our hospital committee? Let me tell you a short sto-ry…on July10th at 9:15pm at night my wife received a phone call on her cell phone from the nurse at our daughter’s pediatrician

office. The call was advising us that we needed to get my twin daughter Rilee into the Orthopaedic Surgeon as soon as possible for a scoliosis check. We didn’t know what was going on at this point. After an extremely sleepless night we composed ourselves and made an appointment at NKC hospital for the following Monday. The next day was our stated Temple meeting and I talked to our Chairman Ed Stowell about the call and he assured me that the Shriner’s Hospital was there and would be able to take care of anything that we would need for this type of condition for her if it got to the point of having any surgery or treatment. Ed’s compassion and “talking though” the situation is just what a nervous dad needed. I felt an over abundance of love and support from an organization that I have been a member of for 23 years. Fast forward to today, July 16th. Everything was good with her appointment at NKC hospital and she will not require any surgery and they told her to keep doing everything that she always has!!!

Remember that the resources of friendship and brotherhood may payoff in a day of turmoil. As I end this article be proud of your membership in the greatest Temple in Shrinedom!

Ararat Guides Flag Unit RON HICkEY, PRESIDENT

The Guides are going to host a Mystery Train Dinner The-ater fundraiser in A/B at Ararat Shrine on October 12. The train leaves at 6:45 PM with cocktails starting at 6 PM at

the cash bar. The bar in the restaurant will be open prior to 6 PM for those who wish to have a cocktail prior to boarding the A/B Train. Dinner will start at 6:45 when the train leaves and will consist of 4 courses of appetizer, salad, New York Steak and veggies, and dessert, coffee and iced tea, all set in a railroad dining car. The tables are going to be 8 foot tables set for eight people per table.

A professional acting group will guide us through an un-folding murder mystery which everyone will participate in solv-ing a who done it. There will be four selected passengers who will have special instructions and will be a part of the play. The period will be set in the 1920’s during a voting scandal during the Pendergast era. Participants are encouraged to bribe their fel-low passengers to uncover secrets they may be holding. The more you come dressed for the eve-ning the better. There will be specialty drinks offered like Kansas City Ice Water, popular during the prohibition era. There will be prizes awarded for solving the mystery (a drawing for multiple correct answers), for the best costume, and for the most creative wrong answer. There will be a prize table (silent auction) for super sleuths to spend their ill gained bribe money on at the end of the evening.

The tickets for this fun and frivolity are $60 per person, with a strict limit of 150 people. We will only have seating for 150, and the structure of the mystery theater will not allow any more than that number. Once we sell out, the only way to get a ticket will be for someone to back out. Any of the Guides can get you your tickets or by calling 816- 805-5777. Plan to come and have fun solving a mystery involving a train, a body, a sinister killer and 150 witnesses who saw and heard something, but what did they see and hear, and what secret information are they holding?

With the patient gone and the team’s re-sponsibilities complete, they could now relax, and head toward their home base. Shortly after 11:30 pm three weary but contented men per-formed their last duty of the trip. Checking the van and insuring it was ready for the next trip when once again a child would need vital medi-cal care that they could not otherwise obtain. As the garage door descended in the night the van sat inside waiting, prepared for the task it and its drivers are so uniquely suited to handle; to make the world a better place, one child at a time.

As a follow up, the patient is recovering nicely and is doing fine. Her life and the lives of the men who transported her are forever and indelibly changed by the experience. While no

requirement has ever been made, many feel all Shriners should take at least one trip to a Shrine Hospital to see firsthand the incredible impact the Shrine has on children and the even stronger impact the strength and courage of the children have on the men who transport them. If you wish to ride along on a hospital transport trip, contact the Hospital Transportation Office to make ar-rangements.

Ararat Shrine is proud to provide this vital service to the children of our community. The Hospital Transportation team is always on the lookout for men who will volunteer to serve. If you would like to explore this important duty, please contact Leroy Graham or Bert Torrey at the Hospital Transportation Office. The number is (816) 923-5429 Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

We’re already preparing for the Fall Ceremonial October 26th and 27th, and have I got some fantastic news

to share! Your temple leadership has found a way to continue to allow a Mason to become a Noble for just $150.00 for the Fall Ceremo-nial! This will include pro-rated 2012 dues and initiation fees! So once again it will only cost $150 to be a Shriner at Ararat Shrine in 2012!!!! Please take advantage of this incredible of-fer and get your petitions in as soon as possible.

We will have another “Masonic Unity Evening” October 17th, 2012. We will be honored with the presence of the current Deputy Grand Mas-ter, and if elected he will be the Grand Master, of the State of Missouri, RWB David Ramsey. We will also have programs by the Valley of the Kansas City Scottish Rite, the York Rite Bodies of Missouri, our own Arch Production Team and Ararat Hospitals Committee. We will need support both financially and participation from units and clubs. We are encouraging all Masons and their ladies to attend. Please help spread the word to all Masonic Lodges. This is the opportunity to share several aspects of Freemasonry with anyone who seeks light. We

look forward to seeing you there. Speaking of sharing the Shrine experi-

ence with relatives, the “Legacy Program” is something you can share with your family. For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradi-tion. “From one generation to the next, Shri-

ners have enjoyed a unique brotherhood and shared in an important mission. The Shri-ners Legacy Program is a way to show your pride in being a Shriner and to celebrate your part in the special brother-hood that comes from mem-bership. The Shriners Legacy Program is open to any male family member* related to a Shriner, including: • Fathers • Grandfathers • Brothers • Uncles • Sons • Grandsons • Nephews • In-laws” You and your legacy will receive a special Legacy pin.

If you sponsored a Legacy candidate in

the spring ceremonial, you will need to log in to www.ShrinersVillage.com to re-cord your legacy and receive your pin. Here are the steps:

1. Log in to www.ShrinersVillage.com (If you have never logged on to the site before, you will need to create a username and password.)

2. Click on the “Membership” tab on the upper middle portion of the page.

3. Click on the “Legacy Program” tab on the left hand side of the page.

4. Click on the “To enter our Shrine legacy program click here.” And enter your informa-tion here and a Legacy Pin will be mailed to you.

Attention all Units and ClubsThere will be a Special Membership meet-

ing August 30th 2012, from 7:00pm-8:15pm, to help Units and Clubs prepare a recruitment program for the Fall Pub Crawl. We will pres-ent a program that will ensure your unit or club a “fair advantage” in gaining new members and keeping them at the Pub Crawl! Be the first unit or club to have a list of the candidates in-terested in your group! We encourage all Mem-bership Chairmen or Presidents to attend. It WILL be worth your time.

& Food Wine BY STEVE DOWDY

We, my Lady and I, just made arrange-ments for dinner with friends at a Mexican restaurant, and they invited

us to visit their home for a glass of wine be-fore the meal. Now, everybody knows that I wouldn’t turn down a glass with friends except under direct threat of dire physical harm, so we will be there. I will be thirsty.

Now, I’m trying to figure the perfect wine to pair with good Mexican food. It’s not really my responsibility, but it’s an interesting ques-tion. Mexican food has always been paired with beer and tequila in my world, but not this time.

Conventional wisdom would dictate a ro-bust wine to go with the vivid flavor of Mexi-can food, but what does that mean when you’re actually choosing the wine. First, you have to accept that what eat is normally Tex-Mex, and thus more highly spiced than the food more

commonly served in the in-terior of Mexico. So, a fresh, sleek, wine, with some acid-ic crispness would likely be the best choice for a typical KC-Mex meal. White choic-es would probably be a Pinot Grigio or a good, dry, Reis-ling, or maybe a Sauvignon

Blanc. If you’re inclined toward red wines, try a Pinot Noir, or a Spanish Riojas.

A soft, juicy, Zinfandel with massive fruit flavors can be sensational with earthy red chile sauces, and super supple Shirazes and Shiraz blends from Australia, with deep berry flavors, can cushion robust seasonings.

It would probably be best to avoid Char-donnay, because its typical oaky, toasty charac-ter fights with bold, complex Mexican flavors, and the wine ends up tasting coarse and bitter. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot don’t fare much better. Both have a lot of tannin, and when tan-nin hits the flavor of chilies, it sets your mouth on fire and you miss all the complexities of the food.

Tuck these guidelines away and experiment without fear. You might be glad you skipped the beer.

The late Joe Paterno, longtime football coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, has been very much in the news lately, and not in a favorable way. We human beings have a harm-ful habit of accentuating the negative and overlooking the positive. Harmful because

those who cannot forgive hold on to anger, resentment, and thoughts of revenge. On the other hand people who can forgive are much happier and healthier and have a greatly extended life span.

People have chosen to talk about the sad, unexplained and previously unknown events brought to their attention in the closing months of Coach Paterno’s life. I’ve heard no one mention anything about the year Penn State was playing Alabama in the Sugar Bowl for the national championship.

They probably would have won, but they had a touchdown called back because there was a twelfth man on the field. After the game, Paterno was asked to identify the player. “It’s only a game” he said. “I have no intention of ever identifying the boy. He just made a mistake.”

I’ve chosen to discuss “forgiveness” with you this month because it seems to me that more and more of us are having trouble letting go of resentments and thoughts of revenge. We find it everywhere; in the business world, in neighborhoods, in families, in our fraternities and social activities, and even in our churches.

Helen Keller, the blind and deaf woman who made history by learning to overcome her disabilities was once asked if there was anything worse than being blind “Oh, yes!” she an-swered. “There is something worse than being blind. It’s being able to see and not having any vision.”

We would do well to remember and live these words spoken by the great Indian philoso-pher, Mahatma Gandhi, known for his doctrine of non-violent protest: “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attitude of the strong.”

Nobody Told Me!BY STEVE DOWDY

Here we go again! It’s time to run an-other old column all over again, because we have a big bunch of new Nobles. Seems like I’m cheating when I do this, but something al-ways changes.

The basic question was “What’s a Poten-tate’s Aide?” Of course, that leads to a lot of other questions about who is …….. and what does he do.

Well, a Potentate’s Aide is a special kind of man that dedicates at least one year of his life to doing whatever the Potentate wants him to do. He is appointed by the Potentate, usually because of some special talent that he possesses. Many times, that special talent is simply a love for the Shrine, and a willingness to work for it.

Potentate’s Aides are the men, and their wives, that the Illustrious Sir calls upon when-ever he wants anything done. They are the people that decorate the Temple for Christmas, and usually they remove the decorations. They are the people that help organize and prepare for ceremonials. They help with the Officers’ Seminar, staff the Temple Hospitality Rooms, decorate for the Potentate’s Ball, transport all

of the Temple property that is used wherever the Shrine goes. They are workhorses. They take direction from the Potentate, and they represent him at all times, in that they want to give everyone the highest opinion of our lead-er. And they smile all the while. They also have fun all the while.

This year, the Chief Aide is John Nelson. He spends much of his time at the Temple, and he is your friend. Walk a day in his shoes, and you will be tired.

You really can’t talk about the Assis-tant Directors of Uniformed Units without first talking about the Director of Uniformed Units. For 2012, he is Don Pittier, Sr., who has been Director and Assistant Director for several years. His job is to persuade the Uni-formed Units to put on a parade that makes everyone talk about the Shrine for at least a few minutes. He does other things, too, but they are all directed towards showing the best side of the Shrine whenever we are on dis-play. The Assistant Directors are assigned to particular units to help the Director of Uni-formed Units do his job. All of these Nobles are appointed by the Potentate, and they are

the reason that the Shrine part of the parade always goes so well. And, like the Aides, they smile all the while, and they have fun all the while.

The Director of Uniformed Units and his Assistant Directors are not members of the Director’s Staff, nor does the Director’s Staff owe any particular allegiance to the Direc-tor of Uniformed Units. They share a similar name, but their functions are certainly differ-ent.

Uniformed Unit Directors are also not re-lated to the Director of Uniformed Units, ex-cept that they do take some instruction from the Director and Assistant Directors of Uni-formed Units. Unit Directors are also appoint-ed by the Potentate, so they owe their loyalty to him. Prudence and desire to make every-body look good requires that Unit Directors sometimes take direction from the Director of Uniformed Units, but it’s not really a man-agement/labor relationship. Perhaps it’s more like a marriage of convenience.

Now, we come to the Director of Shrine Clubs, who is in no way related to the other Nobles who carry the title of “Director.” The

Director of Shrine Clubs, through the Am-bassadors, represents the Potentate, and the Temple, in those areas where the interests of the Temple and the Shrine Clubs join to-gether. An Ambassador’s duties are to assist the Club Liaison Officer, in what ever way is required.

The one thing that all of these “Directors” have in common is a desire and willingness to work for the good of the Shrine. Temple appointments are not rewards for previous service, nor are they opportunities for self-aggrandizement. Temple appointments are simply an opportunity to work, and work some more, for the good of the Temple. An Assistant Director of Uniformed Units can’t be too tired to go to the parade out in Snake Navel, and an Ambassador can’t skip the club meeting tonight. And the Aides, well, nobody ever asks if they want to do something, they are simply told that it needs to be done. The rewards are many: lifelong friends, a sense of accomplishment, and association with broth-ers of similar but different interests. These Nobles deserve your respect for their willing-ness and desire to serve you.

Hillbilly Clan #124 NewsBY RABBAN OF THE CLAN, MIkE ALLEN

On Saturday, July 14th Hillbilly Cuzzins gathered in the hills of Ararat for a family reunion. Some of them cuzzins we ain’t seen in a coon’s age! We were even honored to be led in prayer by the Illustrious Cuzzin, who kept his prayer to 10 words or less. After an awesome Possum Queen family dinner of aardvark tongues, Ozark oysters and nearly fresh road kill, the

Cuzzins inducted 21 Flatlanders into the Clan. Keeper of the Cob Barney Miller even made us a brand new outhouse for the occa-sion. If you missed out on the fun we’ll be having another reunion later this fall. My heavens, here we are just getting started into July and the thermometer at the Harle’s house is hovering around

the 105 degree mark, and that’s in the shade. We like to remember the good old days when, but if you listen to the experts on the weather chan-nels they tell us that today’s weather is breaking and making new records for the record books. Makes you want to think about the most recent outing of our Blue Springs Shrine Club.

As mentioned in some of my recent ar-ticles about our club, I’m going to tell all of you about one of our most successful ventures planned by our President Noble James Gargotta and lovely First Lady Gail. Yep, you got that right; it’s our club picnic and fish fry held at Noble Charlie and Lady Bobbie’s lake home on beautiful Lake Lotawana. Everybody brought their favorite dish and or desert to add to the de-licious fish cooked just right by our host, Noble Charlie, who by the way just returned from a Canadian fishing trip above International Falls. The lake trout and walleye, as well as some good ole Missouri catfish left nothing to be de-sired when it comes to something to eat. And yes, there was plenty of iced tea of all the right varieties to whet our whistle.

To Noble Charlie and Lady Bobbie, from all of your fellow club members, here is a great big vote of appreciation for hosting a super first class party.

For all you lovely ladies, remember at our picnic there was also a Baby Shower held in honor of Lady Kate Wendt, which proved to be most successful. Some ladies are saying let’s do it again. Do we have any volunteers???

To all members of Ararat Shrine, here is an open invitation to come and be a part of our fast growing, fun loving, active, with pretty ladies and handsome gentlemen, (yes you also fit the description) Blue Springs Shrine Club. All you need to do is look up one of our officers in your Shrine Calendar of Events Book and give us a call. We’ll tell you how to join us in one of our meetings. We can’t make anything happen un-less you reach for that telephone.

See you next time, same time, same place. This is ole Fingers Harle saying remember who we are, WE ARE MASONS AND SHRINERS.

Northland Shrine Club NewsBY BOBBIE WHITE, PRESIDENT

Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great bunch of guys with a WONDER-

FUL wives group who meet once a month for good food and fellowship.

On July 3rd we had our regular meeting at the VFW in Claycomo (right there beside Stroud’s). We started the evening at 5:30 PM with a social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an excellent Swiss Steak dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy and peas (not my favor-ite but they sure did disappear), plus several salads and dessert. Wow, what a feast! Next month please come on out, enjoy a meal with us and have some great fellowship. We will be having meat loaf in hopes that Everett is up to coming out for dinner.

Prior to dinner Noble Vice President Bert Torrey led us in prayer and then Noble Presi-dent Bobbie White led us in the Pledge of Al-legiance. Due to injuries, illness and the holi-days we didn’t have a drawing this month but the ladies assured us we would have a draw-ing next month and they are pretty sure who-ever wins will enjoy it immensely. Thanks Ladies for all your efforts.

President White opened the meeting at 7:15 PM. We were glad to have Noble Am-bassador Shawn Robinson back with us. It was good to have you back Sir.

We still seem to have some illness issues going around. Everett and Isabella weren’t there as Everett had taken a tumble and wasn’t feeling well. Dave Dowell was out on the sick list and was reportedly suffering from Mon-tezuma’s Revenge. We haven’t heard from Bev or Ron recently but hopefully her arm is healing up, and Lloyd and Barb were missing in action.

We then had a very short business meet-ing; many of our officers were missing so no reports from them. We were then advised of an upcoming special event for Compass Lodge. On August 18th, 2012 they will be

holding a special closed Installation of Of-ficers / Fundraiser for their new building. There will be members of St. Mary’s Lodge of England, the United Grand Lodge of Eng-land, the Grand Lodge of Kansas present and our own Most Worshipful Brother John Hess will serve as the Installing Master. The installation will be followed by a 3 course catered English Festive Board. Contact any Compass member for a flyer regarding this very special event.

Noble Bob Eckerle advised us of the up-coming Golf Tournament in Parkville to ben-efit the VFW there. See Bob if you need info. We then had a moment of silence as the Black Camel has taken away another Past President in Noble Shane Felts. It was moved, seconded and passed to purchase a memorial brick, and to make a donation to his family as they need some help and he had done a lot for the club.

Our Ambassador Shawn Robinson then filled us in on upcoming events at the Tem-ple including the fact there is always a need for help on Thursday nights at Bingo and the Provost really need help. Please see Neil Cowan if you can be of assistance to them. He reminded us to please try and support each other’s functions. If you can attend another unit or club’s dinner or dance please do so. We have to take care of each other. He then informed us that between the hot and cold sands we recently had we have 77 new nobles in the Temple. That is excellent news.

If any new noble wants to come visit us we welcome you and your Lady. We will even buy your dinner the first time and pay your first year’s dues for the club. So stop by and visit with us.

We truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you to keep our club active and functional.

Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meetings and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.

Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on by our next meeting, Tuesday August 7th at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you there!!!

They say the only thing that is constant in life is change. Coming in the fall class last year was Shawn Taubert and his

Lady Geraldine. Just as we were getting ready for the start of this year’s parade season, Shawn got word of a promotion and relocation to the Corvette Factory in Bowling Green, Ky. Op-portunities like that don’t come along very of-ten, so as much as we looked forward to having him join the group and get to know him and his lady better, he had to take the opportunity for advancing his career. While we are losing a good Noble, the Shrine Temple he will be mov-ing to is getting someone good.

We have a new member, Clarence Birk who took over the cart that Shawn had been working on. He has hit the ground running and has already been at several events. Goodbye to Shawn and Geraldine and welcome to Clar-ence.

Our July meeting was held at the Temple on Monday, July 2nd with 3 officers and several members present. By the vote of the membership a new member was elected to become a part of our unit, Noble Leonard Huff. He has 2 beautiful cars; a 1955 Ford Thunderbird

and a 1982 Chevrolet Corvette. He also is restoring a 1932 Ford Coupe. We paraded in Boonville on Saturday, June 23rd with 8 cars and again in Clinton on Saturday,

June 30th.with 9 cars. The Sugar Creek parade on Wednesday, July 4th was well attended with 14 cars. Some of us enjoyed breakfast at the Moose Lodge prior to the parade. We thank the business and civic clubs of Sugar Creek for serving us hot dogs and beverages following the parade.

Our Social Dinner was held at Habanero’s in Lee’s Summit on Monday, July 9th with 20 members and ladies attending.

Thank you to all members who sold onions which resulted in a good profit for our unit.In this issue we highlight the beautiful 1985 Cadillac Eldorado convertible pictured at right,

ORIENTAL BANDBy Dave Wilbanks, Scribe

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

ARARAT’S OWN COUNTRY CLASSICS By Jeff Davis, Scribe

There’s an old Vince Gill song titled, “Look at Us.”I think that fits as a pretty good theme for this month.“LOOK AT US”!!!!!! We’re going to be very busy allaround the jurisdiction.

First, we will be playing at the Abdallah Shrine’sRodeo Kick-off Party on May 1. This is a great party andthey have a wonderful time and have been very good tous as a band. We enjoy playing for them every year.

We will be at Ararat on the 15th playing for the

Ceremonial. This is a fundraiser for the Temple socome on out, enjoy some good music and help theTemple with your donations.

And, of course, we love playing at the WarsawShrine Club’s pre parade party on June 4th. We have asmuch fun as they do and really enjoy playing for all ofthe Ladies and Nobles.

That should bring things up to date. Til nextmonth……..

NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy

I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.

We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.

This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery

added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.

The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.

Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several

young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,

some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!

It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our

fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.

I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!

If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

Mini Model T’sBY STEVE HARGRAVE, SCRIBE

Another month has passed this year. This has been one of the hottest years since 1936. The heat has not dampened the enthusiasm of the Mini T’s

however. While some of the members have not been able to attend all of the parades this summer because of work obligations, we have been able to field Mini T’s at the parades. Our best turnout was of course the 4th of July parade at Sugar Creek. This has always been the do not miss parade since I have been in the T’s. This year was especially fun because we had non members that wanted to try out our cars in a parade before they made a commitment. As we promised all of the new Nobles, let us know if you want to try out a car and have fun with us. I hope that the three, Scott Willi, Joe Cundiff, and Louis Jenkins, had as much fun at Sugar Creek as the rest of us did. Nevin Spidle and his family were nice enough to join us and drive the golf cart for us. This gave Travis and Damon Paull and his lady an opportu-nity to join in on the fun. After the parade we invaded Ernie’s for our traditional 4th of July get together. Be-sides having a good meal and some camaraderie, we had a wonderful surprise. Our waitress was a patient at our Saint Louis Hospital. Telling us her story was the icing on the cake for a great parade. There was a down side to the day. We were missing some of our long time friends. I hope the reason was the extreme heat. We hope that we will see you at our next meeting.

Don’t forget that the next stated meeting will be at the Temple on August 1st in our usual room. Come early and eat at the restaurant. If you would like to come and join us at the meeting call Jaimie Blackburn or Jar-ed Hargrave and let them know. We would like to talk to you.

Remember, now is the time to get out, weather per-mitting, and collect money for the circus. We have two more big events for the year, the Swap Meet, September 14th to the 16th and the Ararat Shrine Circus, Novem-ber 15th to the 18th. We hope to see you all there.

Antique Auto welcomed two new members at the June meeting; Nobles David Leighr and Terry Tharp. We look forward to their participation in socials and parades!

Liaison officer Nick Baldi distributed Crown of Honor Jewels at the meeting to de-serving nobles.

The July Social was held on the 10th at the Corner Café in Independence. Twenty-four “All-Star” Nobles and Ladies attended. Everyone had a great evening. The next Social is planned for Wednesday, August 15th at 6:30 pm at Catfish Charlie’s in Wellington, MO.

Please keep Dale Walters and John Saul in your thoughts and prayers. Things seemed mighty quiet without your “additions.” Hang in there Ladies Lois and Nancy. You’re in our prayers, too. Lady Loydine Kranz is now home from the hospital after recent surgery. Word is Noble Wayne is waiting on her hand and foot.

As the new Scribe, please keep me informed of additions or changes to your garage. That way we can all share in the excitement and fun.

ALWN met in the Truman Room. It was reported Norma Irwin has been in the hospital with a virus, but has now returned home.

Gary Mosby, Director and Pipe Major of the Pipes and Drums Unit, along with James Stout, Major Sergeant, told us many things about their unit. The Pipes and Drums were started in 1973. We were told about the “tartan” and “hats” the men wear; also the shoes are called Gilley Baroques. The pins on their tartans are called “Kilt Pins.” After showing us about Scottish Wood Pipes they played several tunes for us.

We had a guest, Mamie Robinson. Hope to see her soon. Decorations and refreshments were served by Gloria Sutton and Shirley Ragon. Our birthday ladies for July are: Marie Dear, Barbara McCrary, Pat Mohler, and Wanda Mor-

Greeter NewsBY DARYL kRAUSE

“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter.”

On Sunday, July 15th @ 3:00 pm the Jockeys were weighed in, the horses were in the gates and 136 Shriners and their families lined up to watch the start of “Run for the Roses”. One of the Greeters Biggest Success Stories was about to begin.

Approximately 8 months prior to that, Lynn and I were sitting in a car in Lexington, Missouri on an antique finding mission with Janet & Gary Cordell. We were discussing my Presidency for the upcoming year and the things I could do to turn things up a notch or two.

That is when Janet turned to me and said “YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE FUN”?

Wikipedia interpretation: Fun is the enjoyment of pleasure and “an absolutely primary category of life, familiar to everybody at a glance right down to the animal level. “fun may be encountered in many human activities during work, social func-tions, recreation and play, and even seemingly mundane activities of daily living. fun may often have little to no logical basis, and opinions on whether or not an activity is fun may differ. The distinction between enjoyment and fun is difficult to articulate but real, fun being a more spontaneous, playful, or active event. The perception of time is shortened when one is “having fun.”

Janet’s statement hit home with me that day. It was then that I decided to base my whole year as President of the Greeters solely on making it Fun to be there. After all, the Shrine is the Social Group of the Masons and that alone means it should be based on the act of having Fun. Take the Fun out of the equation and you will see less participation. Less participation means less Nobles us-ing the restaurant, attending meetings, parading and most importantly staying a Shriner.

Put the Fun back into it and Shriners will respond. Example: The last ceremonial I had just as many Nobles telling me they were having Fun as new candidates. It was not just another day wasted. There was pride in those participating Shriners’ eyes. Way to Go NICK!

On August 25th, the Potentate Aides are having their Annual Luau. Tickets are available through the Business Office or any Ararat Aide. For $12 in advance or $15 at the door, you can see what Fun is like with 500 + participants. I encourage all Shriners no matter where you are, Get Your Tickets NOW, and Come Have Some FUN!

Janet and Gary Cordell, along with their helpers, took the concept of “Run for the Roses” and made it Fun for the 136 who participated. They truly took being a Greeter & Greeterette and stepped it up…Which is why once again I say…“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter.”

P.S.: To all Ararat Shriners participate and make it FUN. Thank You!

Greetings and a sincere hope this article finds all in the good graces of our Creator. Remain in his stead and he will lead and take you through the trials and obstacles that lie in your life’s path. Pray daily for our children with special needs and those who make it possible to live as we please through their sacrifice and service. Be proud to serve our fellow man as Master Masons and Shriners.

Our volunteers have served up another fine Breakfast. If you’re not participating in our monthly Breakfast as a volunteer or as a patron you are missing out on a fine meal and a way to keep this club floating. We thank all of our Shriners and Ladies that make this fundraiser possible. The Bloody Mary Breakfast will be our Breakfast for August and all proceeds go to the Shrine Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.

We opened our Shrine Fair Stand early this year to try and make a little more money for the club by selling breakfast and dinner to the Bike Convention in the later part of July. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who cleaned up our stand and did the foot work and prep to make this possible. Kudos folks.

This is a call for all of our members and friends to be a volunteer at our Shrine Stand during the Missouri State Fair, August 9th through the 19th. We run a 24 hr. food stand broken up in 4 shifts. Our volunteer roster is in the Pro Shop at our Elm Hills Blvd. facility. Please come in and sign up for a shift. Our club desperately needs your help. We thank all our Brother clubs and units for your help in the past and ask for your continued support in 2012.

If you missed our July Membership Dinner you missed out on some mighty tasty ribs & fixins ala Weaver.

Again we thank our Ladies for all that you do to make all of our fundraisers and events the successes they turn out to be. You are truly “God Sends.”

Remember our sick and disabled and their families in your prayers. Pray for those in service to this great nation and again pray for our special children and the continued success of our hos-pitals.

Needle GuildBY JERRI DOWDY

Thank you to those who have given personal donations to Needle Guild. Also thanks to those who have recently donated fabric. We appreciate all donations; they help us to continue to send items to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We hope all our members are well and surviving the heat. We look forward to seeing all the members again in September.

We still need clean panty hose or knee highs. We use them to stuff Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. If you don’t sew, you can help at Needle Guild meetings by cutting panty hose and stuffing the dolls. Please bring your panty hose to the Shrine office or give them to a Needle Guild member.

If you are interested in making articles for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and making new friends, come to a meeting on the 2nd or 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. For more information call President, Elaine Graham at 816-524-0933. We would like to see you at a meeting this year starting in Sep-tember.

Provost NewsBY BILL HUFFMAN, SCRIBE

Noble Neil Cowan Jr. was born on November 20, 1953, in Kansas City, MO. Noble Cowan’s father, Neil Sr.,

owned an appliance service business, and Noble Cowan worked for his dad throughout high school.

Neil’s father belonged to Cecile Day-light Lodge #305 starting in 1952 and Abdal-lah Shrine in 1963. Noble Cowan was raised at the Swope Park Lodge in 2005, and then transferred to Cecile Daylight in 2007. Neil became a mem-ber of Ararat Shrine that same year and joined the Provost Club in 2008. His dedication has taken him from Private to Ma-jor, and he is currently the Vice Presi-dent. Neil is also the Temple Se-curity Commander. He is proud of being a Tribesmen member and the recipient of the Order of the Arrow. Other honors include being the Sgt. at Arms of the DeMolay Le-gion of Honor in Kansas City, and current Quartermaster of the Patrol.

After graduating from Shawnee Mis-sion High School, Neil excelled in several fields of work. He started out at King Ra-dio, worked for an aviation firm, was Shift Supervisor at Dan Guard Security, worked as a mechanic for AMF, was a commercial painter for new homes, and retired from Truck Trailer and Hitch.

Like many others have stated, Noble Cowan said “WE NEED HELP.” Talk to any Provost Club member to see where you might fit in for a day or evening spot.

Until next time, God Bless.

A Final Message from Imperial Potentate Mike Severe

Greetings my fellow Nobles, As I write this message, I’m in Charlotte, N.C., pre-

paring for the 2012 Imperial Session. It will be an exciting week as we welcome our incoming Imperial Potentate Alan Madsen and celebrate the 140th anniversary of our fraternity. I look forward to seeing many of you in just a couple of days!

Last month, I had a wonderful time with several Shri-ners and their Ladies during the Imperial Potentate’s Trip to Alaska. Right after the trip ended, I traveled to Portland, Ore., for the Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session. At the event, the Daughters of the Nile gave our health care system a generous gift of $800,000, bringing their total donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children to more than $50 million. In addition to monetary

gifts, the Daughters of the Nile volunteer countless hours at the hospitals and provide much-needed items including clothing, quilts, books, toys and games. The organization’s dedication and support over the years has played an integral role in the success of our health care system.

My next stop was Tampa, Fla., for Shriners Hospitals for Children and Shriners Inter-national Committee Week. During the visit, I attended meetings for the Investment Committee, Strategic Assessment Task Force and Salary, Personnel, and Retirement Committee. The meetings were extremely productive and I’m excited about the committees’ ideas for the upcoming Imperial Year.

I then traveled to Louisville, Ky., for the International Supreme Council Order of DeMolay. As part of an annual tradition, I presented a check on behalf of Shriners International to DeMolay during their opening session. I also met with key leaders of DeMolay to discuss ways we can work with their organization. As a Senior DeMolay, I believe it is important for temples to develop and maintain relationships with DeMolay; the organization can positively influence and impact the future of our fraternity.

While I was in Louisville, I attended a dinner at the Kosair Temple to promote fellowship and membership. The Kosair Shriners are doing a fantastic job bringing in new members, and I congratulate them for all of their hard work. Later that weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the DeMolay Hall of Fame induction of our very own Past Imperial Potentate Nick Thomas. Also in attendance were Imperial Recorder and Executive Vice President Jack Jones and Imperial Sir Chris Smith, a Senior DeMolay. Imperial Sir Thomas has devoted 60-plus years to Masonry and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this tremendous honor.

I honestly can’t believe it was almost one year today that I became your Imperial Potentate. The past 12 months have been an incredible experience and one that I will always cherish. I’ve enjoyed traveling the country and meeting so many of you. We are a special group of people and every Noble should feel extremely proud of helping make Shriners International what it is today.

In addition to numerous temple visits, I have officially been to all 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children. At every hospital, the staff I spoke with impressed me with their knowledge, attentive-ness and care. To witness first-hand the impact our health care system has on children and their families is always an unforgettable experience.

This past year has allowed me to do some amazing things. Never in my wildestdreams did I envision I would raise a flag at Fort McHenry, participate in the wreath laying at

the Tomb of the Unknowns, tour the Panama Canal, ride on a float in the Tournament of the Roses Parade and have the chance to put a Fez on my own son.

It has been an honor to serve as your leader and I cannot thank you enough for allowing me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“Remember Why You Became a Shriner!” Yours in the Faith,

Michael G. Severe Imperial Potentate Chairman of the Board of Directors
