Purpose

• Our board of directors was approached by a non-profit that was in need of human resource expertise.

• Due to budgetary constraints outsourcing was cost prohibitive.

• The board unanimously agreed to give the time, treasure, and talent to the agency focusing on interviewing, skills, retention, professional development, performance evaluations, terminations, and employment law.

Page 13: ©SHRM 2012 Community Outreach Programs June 7, 2012

©SHRM 2012

Implementation & Outcomes

• Our volunteer efforts resulted in success for the organization. We assisted them in creating a personnel handbook and updated their compensation strategy and plan.

• We were able to provide human resource continuity until they were able to hire a human resource manager.

• The agency recognized the value of expertise and they requested that one member stay on as a member of their board of trustees to continue to provide human resource counsel and guidance. That led to the creation of a permanent human resource committee for the agency.

Page 14: ©SHRM 2012 Community Outreach Programs June 7, 2012

©SHRM 2012

The Future

• This model continues to be repeated at non-profit agencies upon request.

• The establishment of human resource committees and their commission is our # 1 request.

• We also provide recommendations from our membership to serve on these committees.

• Specialized non-profit human resource areas of expertise that are provided include but not limited to:

> Internal Revenue Code section 4598 (Exempt Organization Compliance with the Intermediate Sanctions)

> 403b Retirement Fund Management> Health Care Benefits Management & Cost Control
